destin: Higher Mortgage Rates on the Way - 03/16/12 01:58 AM
Rates for all mortgage loan products headed higher this week as positive employment indicators rolled in, with job growth over the last six months the strongest it’s been since 2006. That, coupled with the Greek debt restructuring on the international front and the results of the Federal Reserve’s stress tests pointing to a stronger financial banking system, boosted investor confidence and drove bond yields higher.
“An upbeat employment report for February caused U.S. Treasury bond yields to increase over the week and mortgage rates followed,” according to Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac’s chief economist.
Studies from both Freddie Mac and Bankrate showed … (2 comments)

destin: Remember 9/11/2001 - 09/11/10 07:20 AM
I hope everyone takes a few moments today and remembers the victims of the attack in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.  It's a good time to remember how we all felt violated on that day, the fear of not knowing what was going to happen next, and to remember how we all felt like family--it didn't matter what religion, ethnicity, neighborhood, or what political party we supported.  We were all Americans--of every race and creed--and we still are--I hope we all start acting like it.

destin: Rock the Beach Concert August 15 - 08/15/10 04:46 AM
Tonight, August 15, there will be a "rock the beach" free concert, featuring Lynryd Skynyrd and Josh Thompson at the Boardwalk on Okaloosa Island.  It's being sponsored by the Tourism Development Council with money from BP--in an attempt to boost tourism in the area and bring some people into local hotels and restaurants. Also in the news from the tourism council--there is a search underway for a new "brand" for the area that aptly describes the Destin/Okaloosa/Fort Walton Beach area.  Since there are other "emerald coast" places, an effort to re-identify the area appropriately.  If you have ideas, feel free to contact the … (1 comments)

destin: DestinOilSpill good news for week thru July 11 2010 - 07/09/10 07:26 AM
The coast is clear from "tarballs" and other indications of oil in the Gulf of Mexico.   Hopefully by the time the wind changes and starts blowing the water and oil slick back to the east, there will be plenty of skimmers out there such as "the whale" who can pick it up faster than it can push in.  There has been no indication of dead wildlife locally, so at this point, we have pretty much a "non story" here in the Destin area, except for the pummelling the economy has taken because people are afraid to come!!  You can fish, swim, … (0 comments)

destin: Destin Oil Spill Boom Placement Plan - 06/09/10 10:03 AM
Okaloosa County and the U.S. Coast Guard have developed a boom plan for the Destin Pass that could be the best oil deflection strategy on the Gulf Coast.  But it will be later in the week at best before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issues the permit required for the booms to be deployed. The new plan was devised this weekend after the Coast Guard ordered the removal of booms set in its navigable waters. The most recent plan calls for permanent pilings fitted with flashing lights to be constructed at strategic points within the Destin Pass and boom to be … (0 comments)

Okaloosa County will "probably" start deploying booms Friday, said county Public Safety Director Dino Villani.  Okaloosa County plans to do a practice deployment Friday morning in Destin's East Pass to test its swift water boom system. Boat traffic will remain open.

destin: Base Realignment at Eglin AFB and Duke Field (Crestview) - 02/04/09 05:29 AM
Okaloosa County is faced with growth within the next few years. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) slated Okaloosa County's military installations with a growth of 4,500 military personnel  for a total population influx of 11,000 by 2016. In 2005, Eglin Air Force Base reported being able to house approximately 20% of the incoming military personnel in their current housing inventory. In 2008, Eglin AFB and Hurlburt will demolish 2,257 housing units, but planning to rebuild only 1,684. This puts an additional 573 military families into the community housing market.  The Army Special Forces (2,200) are planned to move into the northern county … (0 comments)
