crofton maryland: Invest in Crofton Real Estate - The Timing Couldn't be Better! - 07/23/14 02:41 AM
Invest in Crofton Real Estate - The Timing Couldn't be Better!
Crofton's real estate market is one of the few in our nation to benefit from changes to our nation's defense strategy. While 70,000 service members will be cut from our armed forces in the $75 million leaner military budget, nearby Fort George G. Meade will welcome 4,000 more military men and women over the next few years.
They will support the information, intelligence, and cyber security missions of the National Security Agency, Defense Informaton Systems Agency, Defense Media Activity, and Cyber Command, which are located at Fort Meade. In fact, 13 major construction projects are currently in … (3 comments)

crofton maryland: Crofton Maryland - Before Hurricane Irene - 08/27/11 12:21 AM
Crofton residents are feeling relatively secure, compared to our neighbors in low-lying areas of Anne Arundel County and the nearby Eastern Shore of Maryland, as we anticipate Hurricane Irene.
Hopefully everyone is prepared with plenty of glow sticks from the Dollar Tree as well as bottled water, canned food, peanut butter & jelly, toilet paper, batteries and other essentials.  But there are a few other things to remember:
Bring inside your outdoor furniture, lawn ornaments, flags, bird houses and feeders, and other items which could become projectiles in gale-force winds. Anticipate that your dog may not be able to go outside … (8 comments)

crofton maryland: Dog Rescue Organization Asks for Your Vote - 08/19/10 05:49 PM
Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue needs your vote by Sunday, August 22, to win a grant of $10,000.  (How to vote is below.)
... In fact, you can vote once a day between now and then.

My daughter and I attended an Adoption Show at Annapolis Petsmart, after I wrote about it for FocusOnCrofton.com, and we left without adopting a dog that day.  But we left with something else:  incredible respect for the volunteers at Oldies But Goodies (OBG).  What an incredible job they do!
This is a cocker spaniel rescue organization without a physical facility - they rely … (15 comments)

crofton maryland: The Week Before Christmas in Crofton Maryland - 12/22/09 10:24 PM
This little parody on Clement Clark Moore's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" should probably be called "A Visit from Margaret".

‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all through the town, Not a buyer was stirring, the market was down. Our sale sign was posted in front with care,In hopes that some buyers soon would be there.
The children were curled up reading in bed,And visions of moving danced in dad’s head. Now Grandma in her sweater, and pa in his cap,Were asleep near the fire, taking a nap.
When out in the yard there arose such a clatter,I leaped from my chair to see what was the matter.Away to the window I flew like a flash,Pulled back the curtains and threw up the … (17 comments)

crofton maryland: Crofton Resident Featured in Wall Street Journal Today - 11/16/09 10:16 PM

Want to learn more about Crofton resident Kristen Becker?  Just pick up a copy of today's Wall Street Journal and turn to the Life & Style section.
Or you can click on the link to When Mr. Clean meets Ms. Messy to read the article online.  You'll learn Kristen's age, how many children she has, who lives in her home besides her husband and kids, and which spouse is the neatnik (and which is the slob).
Kristen, we'll be interested in learning how columnist Elizabeth Bernstein "discovered" you and your husband.
Kristen has been a member of Crofton Village Garden Club since September and she's … (5 comments)

crofton maryland: Will This Maryland Wetland Soon Become Concrete? - Part 1 - 10/25/09 11:41 PM
For the next few weeks, I'm going to share with you weekly photos of the wetlands on the west side of Route 3 in Crofton, Maryland.  Enjoy them while you can because the property owner has somehow managed to obtain a permit from the Maryland Department of the Environment to develop this natural wetlands area into a site for a big-box store.
Community residents and activists successfully drove Walmart away and assumed the issue was dead.  Little did we know that the permit process continued.  Even if we had known it, who could have imagined that our state Department of the … (34 comments)

crofton maryland: Crofton Maryland Real Estate - Civic Association Meeting Could Impact Your Property Value - 09/21/09 02:04 AM
The Crofton Civic Association annual meeting is tonight at Crofton Elementary School (7:30 p.m.) and the “hot topic” will be the future of Lake Louise.
Once the jewel of Crofton’s curb appeal, Lake Louise has been an eyesore for years.
In the early days of my real estate career, prospective home buyers were always impressed at the lovely entrance into “Old Crofton” – the beautiful pond known as “Lake Louise” and the meticulously maintained lawns.  No more.  Now their first impression of our neighborhood can be summarized in one word, “OLD”.
Contrast this with their impression as they drive into other nearby … (5 comments)

crofton maryland: Training for Crofton Area Runners - 09/07/09 12:37 AM
“But I can’t run from my front door to the corner mailbox!”
That’s a quote from my daughter Susan a few years ago when someone challenged her to participate in the Cherry Blossom Run.  And she wasn't kidding, when she said that.  After her doctor advised that asthma was no excuse for saying “no” – in fact, it would be good for her – she went online and found a training program for beginning runners.  And yes, she did finish the race.  If she could do it, you can, too!

Now you can train with local resident and prominent runner, trainer and … (25 comments)

crofton maryland: Tree-lined Streets Welcome you to Crofton Area Neighborhoods - 08/28/09 01:33 AM
Distinctive brick gates mark the main entrance into "Old" Crofton on Route 3 in Anne Arundel County, but what's beyond those gates?  Well, here's your answer - Crawford Boulevard, the block-long tree-lined street that welcomes you into our community.

"OLD" CROFTON

"Old Crofton" is not the only local community with tree-lined streets, however.  Take a look at these other neighborhoods in the Greater Crofton Area:

NANCARLESAn upscale community in Gambrills on Rt. 450

HALLMARK WOODSA Gambrills community of detached homes on acre-plus lots

THE RIDGESA Crownsville community of custom-built homes

crofton maryland: Crofton in Photos - The Crofton Village Green (LOCALISM FEATURED) - 01/25/09 09:04 AM
Located on Crofton Parkway in the heart of "Old" Crofton at the top of Crawford Boulevard, you'll see the Crofton Village Green as you enter this community.
In Crofton's early days it was the scene of the Spring and Fall Craft Fairs and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, but both events outgrew the Green as the community expanded far beyond the original triangle bounded by Routes 3, 424, and 450.
You can still catch a free summer concert at the Village Green, however, and residents frequent the many businesses ranging from Sly Horse Tavern to a variety of professional offices.

crofton maryland: Do Your New Years Resolutions Include a New Home in Crofton or Odenton? - 01/01/09 03:43 PM
Savvy Crofton and Odenton renters are resolving to buy a home in 2009.
With prices and interest rates at their lowest point in recent years, it's hard to imagine any reason for renting other than unresolved credit issues.
If you haven't yet made a commitment to buy a home in 2009, here are my Top Ten Reasons for doing it now:
1.  Pride of Ownership - You can decorate and landscape according to your own taste, on your own schedule.
2.  Control of Your Own Destiny - No worries about the landlord renewing your lease or raising the rent.
3.  … (5 comments)

crofton maryland: Some Maryland Homeowners Have a New Tax Deduction - 01/27/08 05:33 AM
Maryland homeowners may be eligible for a new federal tax deduction of about $300 that we haven't enjoyed in the past.
This information comes from The Mortgage Insurance Companies of America (MICA), a trade association representing the private mortgage insurance industry.  MICA provides information to lenders and investors on legislative and regulatory issues and represents the industry on Capitol Hill.
According to the MICA website, many homeowners with private mortgage insurance on their home loans may be able to deduct the cost of mortgage insurance premiums for the very first time on their 2007 federal tax returns.
Who qualifies for this deduction?
Families with an adjusted gross income of $100,000 or less … (7 comments)

crofton maryland: Good News for VA-Eligible Home Buyers in Maryland! - 12/15/07 02:56 AM
Sellers WANT you now, after years of shunning VA buyers!
It's true, home sellers are eager to accept your offer on their home, even though your choice of financing may cost them more than a conventional buyer.  'Truth is, they may even pay some or all of your closing costs.  Home sellers felt quite different, just two or three years ago, as two or ten or more home buyers competed to see who could win a seller's favor in the recent sellers' market.  Cash purchases and conventional loans ruled then.
Home buyers rule now!  As the home market has tightened on sellers, buyers have been flexing their muscles, and VA … (6 comments)

December in Crofton is always special, with the huge lighted tree in front of Crofton Country Club, beautiful decorations at the front grate, and wreathes hanging from every lightpost on the Village Green.  If you know anyone in the Crofton Village Garden Club, be sure to thank them.  They have been decorating Crofton for the holidays for more than 30 years!

crofton maryland: Gambrills MD Real Estate Market Update - October 2007 - 11/18/07 09:26 AM
This is the fourth local real estate market update for October 2007 I've prepared in as many days, and things are more optimist in Gambrills thatn some other nearby areas.  I say that because statistics released by MRIS, the regional multiple listing system, indicate that Days on Market for a property in Gambrills is down significantly from last year - Over 32%!  Additionally, the number of units sold in October 2007 remained seven, the same as last October.

Unfortunately, the average sold price in Gambrills is down almost 10% from last year and the median sold price is down overe 40%.  But this … (1 comments)

crofton maryland: Crofton Real Estate Market Update - October 2007 - 11/16/07 01:43 AM
There is good news to report about the Crofton real estate market!
Statistics released by MRIS, the regional multiple listing system for this area, indicate that homes took less time to sell in October 2007 than they did in the same month last year.  Days on Market were down 11.54% to 69.
Additionally, 42 homes sold in the 21114 zipcode last month - 7.69% more than October 2006.  Take a look at these charts:

All the news wasn't good - the average sold price was down 14.48% to $327,400 from $382,846 in October of 2006.  Unless you bought in the past year or two, it simply … (4 comments)

crofton maryland: Crofton Village Garden Club's Thank You to Vets - 11/11/07 02:33 PM
On this Veteran's Day, there are many ways that people all over the country are reaching out to say "thank you" to veterans.  The Crofton Village Garden Club uses flowers.
Instead of having a speaker at the November meeting, we hold a workshop to create red, white and blue flower arrangements for wounded veterans who are recuperating at the Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center nearby in Baltimore.
120 arrangements were created by club members, this year, and delivered to in-patients at the Center, which also provides medical treatment and rehabilitation on an out-patient basis.
There is a lot of "heart" in this project, … (10 comments)
