If ever a place existed for my ten year old grandkid, Isabella, to become acquainted with the ocean, it would be the area of the Pacific that hugs the shoreline along Santa Cruz, Capitola, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Monterey, and Big Sur.  When daughter Tami, Isabella and I, left home last week to adventure in that direction, connection with the sea was the goal.
We weren't disappointed!

carmel mission: Scenes from Mission San Carlos Borromeo at Carmel - 12/03/09 06:25 AM

There is a jewel along the Monterey-Carmel coastline in California, that shouldn't be missed.  It is the Mission San Carlos Borromeo at Carmel.  Father Junipero Serra founded the mission in June of 1770.  Originally the mission was established on the site of the present presidio Chapel in Monterey.  However a year later Father Serra with a group of Indians moved the mission to its present location five miles away in the Carmel Valley - on the other side of the peninsula from Monterey.
Of the 21 missions, of the California Mission chain, the Carmel mission was Father Serra's favorite.  He is buried … (20 comments)
