gold river: A First Time For Everything on The American River Parkway - 11/15/13 11:17 PM
Without a doubt, this autumn in the Greater Sacramento Region has been one of the more pleasant in memory.
The spring and summer months had seemed so very busy. There were improvements made to my home and joyful family encounters, which moved time along at break-neck pace. My bicycle, which often transports me into nature’s world, a couple blocks from home, was neglected more than deserved.
The Salmon are making their annual migration up the American River to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery. So, during a quiet hour this week, I dusted off the bike seat, and headed for the Parkway, to see … (12 comments)

(Slide Show contains 12 images)
Folks living in the Greater Sacramento area, often use Memorial Day weekend, as the benchmark, for putting on their sandals, and kick-starting summer.  Because this has been an unusual year - weather wise, I know my family is looking forward to this event, which is just a few days away.Sacramento is fortunate enough to have so many valuable recreational resources at its back door - especially along the American River. The paved American River Bike Trail is an amazing 33-mile ride, which hugs the river from Old Sacramento to Folsom Lake.  Although much of The American River Parkway … (19 comments)

gold river: Winter's American River in Sacramento County - 12/17/09 12:00 PM

As the American River travels from its place of origin, west of Lake Tahoe, in the high Sierras of Nevada, it meanders through Tahoe and El Dorado National Forests, and the Sierra foothills.  The American River consists of three forks - the South, Middle and North until it reaches a point of integration east of Sacramento. The American provides Northern California with reservoirs, which give power, irrigation, fishing, rafting and recreational activities. In warmer months, the American River flowing through Sacramento county is alive with kayaking and rafting.  Folks seeking comfort from the cool waters and associated activities populate and use the area for their … (20 comments)

gold river: A Modern Day Atlantis! - 02/16/09 12:01 PM
For those of us in the Greater Sacramento area, the rain of the last few days may be causing us to suffer a bit from Cabin Fever.  However, we certainly understand the importance and urgency of restoring our water storage at Folsom Lake and from having a healthier snow pack in the Sierra Nevadas.
There is a part of our local history that has been buried in recent decades, by the waters of Folsom Lake.  The little town of Mormon Island, a one time Gold Rush settlement, was drowned when building the dam at Folsom, allowed water into the area to … (11 comments)

gold river: Free Credit Reports and Avoiding Scams that Surround Them - 08/15/08 03:16 AM
Often when folks are readying themselves to buy homes, one of their first acts of readiness is to obtain their all important credit score.  By law, consumer credit reporting companies, Experian, TransUnion, Equifax, are to provide you a free copy of your credit report, once a year, should you request it.There is a toll-free number, mailing address, and a central website, which you can reach these the three companies mentioned above: http://www.annualcreditreport.com
It should also been known there are companies that claim to provide this free service.  However, there is also and high incidence of questionable practices surrounding some of them.  … (2 comments)

gold river: A Winning Situation for First Time Buyers and Sellers - 08/14/08 12:56 AM
At the stroke of the pen during the President's recent signing of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, opportunity arrived for First Time Buyers.  But even beyond that - it is also good news for Sellers of entry-level houses as well.  In recent months many folks dwelling in their first homes, had wished they could move up to larger homes, but were thwarted in doing so by a market that wouldn't easily accommodate the marketing of their present home.
For First Time Buyers, there are incentives and tax saving available. Those who purchase homes between April 9, 2008 and … (2 comments)

gold river: Will Housing Experience a "Trump Lift"? - 08/13/08 12:17 AM
I was certainly glad to hear what Donald Trump had to say on yesterday's "Good Morning America" show, on ABC.  It was just a year ago that Trump did a segment on Larry King Live, speaking about Selling in an Upside Down Market.  On ABC's Good Morning America Show today, he was interviewed by Diana Sawyer, and gave this encouraging advice, "Buy now, if you can."His prediction - That buyers will have the next year for a historical opportunity to purchase homes.  I couldn't help but wonder if Trump's comments would provide for housing, a "Trump Lift" - similar to the "Icahn … (11 comments)

gold river: Looking for Hidden Treasure for a Down Payment - 08/04/08 06:42 PM
Just this morning I was trying to conjure some creative new ways for buyers of real estate to come up with extra cash for a down payment.  I was talking through the fence with a neighbor, who exclaimed, "I'd need to go on a treasure hunt."I thought about that for a minute, and decided to poke around on the internet, looking for a website which might help a few Californians do just that - and go on a treasure hunt.

Some of you will recall news accountings about the State of California finally getting off their duffs, and trying to … (2 comments)

gold river: The Once-in-a-Lifetime Rule - 08/02/08 12:54 AM
Often GreatWest GMAC Real Estate professionals will be asked by home buyers if home sellers age 55 or older were still allowed a once-in-a-lifetime tax exemption of up to $125,000 in sale profit. That is no longer true. On May 7, 1997, the tax law on home sales changed.  If you live or dwell in the house for two of the five years before you sell, the IRS won't collect tax on sale profit of up to $250,000 if you're single or $500,000 if you and your spouse file a joint return. Currently the law rewards people who sell frequently. In … (4 comments)

gold river: How to Handle a Default Notice - 07/31/08 05:19 PM
Jarina Mohammed, an agent in one of our GreatWest GMAC offices, has performed quite a bit of research on trying to help folks that are threated with default on their homes.  She has given permission to share what she has learned. . .It follows here:
Are you one of the homeowners that fell into an adjustable rate mortgage, and have received a default notice? A word to the wise - do not panic. Many homeowners panic first and think later. This leads to frustration and conflict, and can result in loss of money.  Recent calls from homeowners stating that they fell in to … (7 comments)

gold river: Let's Work to Prevent Wild Fires, and Forest Fires - 07/28/08 06:59 AM
As we all know, California has had more than its share of tragic wildfires this year.  Thus far, I've had a grandson, who along with 400 other Boy Scouts were evacuated from their camp near Butte Canyon a couple weeks back.  I've had 2 friends, who needed to leave their homes and get out of harm's way in other California fires. This time of year is the traditional time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.  Here in California we are blessed to exist among some of the most beautiful mountains and nature areas imaginable.  I just want to add my voice to other voices … (2 comments)

gold river: Congress Passes Housing Rescue Bill - 07/26/08 12:35 PM
It appears Congress has passed a housing rescue bill today hopefully saving 400,000 struggling homeowners from foreclosure.  Although President Bush had originally threatened to veto such a bill, he is expected to sign this measure quickly. The legislation was passed by the Senate vote of 72-13.Homeowners, who are unable to afford their current monthly payments will be able to refinance with more affordable government-backed loans, rather than lose them to foreclosure.  Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be provided a temporary financial lifeboat by this bill, and it tightens controls over them.Mortgage loan limits will see increased caps to $625,000 - on … (0 comments)

gold river: Living the "Simple Life" in Amish Country - 07/22/08 05:47 PM
In early May I made a trip to Amish Country in Lancaster County, PA.  And took a long buggy ride through the countryside.  It was the fulfilment of a longtime dream.  There was so much I learned about living the "simple life" that was interesting to ponder.  For starters, consider this.  We pay more than $4.00 a gallon for gas.  But Daffy (the horse) only eats a little grain, and hay:-)It was a long long way from California.

gold river: What was your first job and what did it teach you? - 07/18/08 12:29 AM
Awhile back, my daughter, Jill was asked by her employer, "What was your first job and what did it teach you?"  This is what she wrote:When I was about five years old my brother, sister, and I picked up walnuts from the back yard.  We weighed and bagged them, put them in a little red wagon and sold them door-to-door in Rancho Cordova on Saturdays.  It was tiring, but effective in fattening up our piggy banks.  There were a lot of lessons learned from dragging that little wagon door-to-door.  I learned that hard work, perseverance and a friendly smile really pay … (1 comments)
