myrl jeffcoat: It's Friday the 13th - What if a Ghost Materializes? - 07/13/18 10:00 AM
It isn't uncommon for homeowners to be curious about what they will be required to disclose in the process of selling their homes. They ponder whether they need to disclose the real reason they are selling the home is because of noisy and obnoxious neighbors. An occasional Seller will question whether the ghost or two, "residing" in the home, needs to be disclosed.

While we're observing this Friday the 13th, I'll ask a question to add a little humor - When a ghost materializes, does it become a material fact; but become an immaterial fact if it does not materialize?

myrl jeffcoat: A Small Informal ActiveRain Meetup - 10/19/16 09:09 AM
It's been awhile since I've had lunch with my friend, and fellow ActiveRain blogger,  Elizabeth Weintraub. When she called about a month ago and said, "If we don't put it on the calendar, it'll never get done," so we calendared it!

Today was a gorgeous day in Old Sacramento. It's blue skies with temps in the high 70s.

The Firehouse Restaurant is always a charming venue for a special lunch.  So, that's where we headed.

The food was amazing, especially the sweet cakelet dessert with creme, topped with an out of this world caramel sauce.

myrl jeffcoat: My Garden with Spring Warmth after Winter Rains - 04/04/16 02:07 AM
There's nothing quite like spring breaking into colorful blossom, after a delightfully wet winter.  California's drought had taken heavy toll these past four years.  However, better than normal Sacramento rainfall this past winter has renewed much that had been lost.
I found my garden flowers were welcoming me with joyful color this morning!

myrl jeffcoat: Casa De Fruta Along California's Pacheco Pass - 03/24/16 11:21 PM
If one takes the I-5 route from Sacramento to Monterey, through Stockton, which takes advantage of Pacheco Pass (highway 152), they will experience landscape much different than scenes along the usual route, traveling west on highway 80 out of Sacramento.  The drive seems more relaxed, and is absent the bridge tolls.

In recent days the hills along Pacheco Pass are a velvety blanket of moss green.  Mists sometimes hover in the area, providing a mystical realm.  The Irish green hue is a gift of recent March rains.

Land development along Pacheco Pass is sparse, but there’s one establishment which has been around longer … (17 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Monterey Sea Treasures - 03/23/16 06:11 AM
Yesterday was a perfect day for my daughter, a couple grandkids and I, to experience a daytrip to Monterey, California.  The beauty of living in the Greater Sacramento region exists in having so many amazing places not far from home.  Monterey is high on the list of those destinations!
The city has the delightful Monterey Bay Aquarium, in addition to Fisherman’s Wharf. My old jaded eyes are never disappointed with the wonder of all things great and small, dwelling in the watery ocean environment!  There are Sea Otters, Jelly Fish, Sharks, Sea Horses, Anemones, Star Fish and Bat Rays.
If you can allow more than … (17 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Only in California - A Ladder For Fishes! - 11/12/15 10:31 AM

When I have the opportunity to ride a little further from home on the American River Parkway, I enjoy stopping by the Nimbus Fish Hatcher, near Hazel Avenue and Highway 50.
Near the first of November each year, the hatchery becomes brisk with activity.  The Salmon, native to the American River, are return home from the ocean, to spawn.
When Nimbus Dam was built generations ago, it impaired the Salmon journey.  So a “California” solution was found to the problem.  A fish rack, or weir was constructed, and a fish ladder with over 20 steps was built, to aid the fish in their destiny of … (52 comments)

Happy Halloween!

The Greater Sacramento Region has more than enough Halloween events and attractions going on, to scare the bejeebers outta ya!
There are several Haunted Attractions in Sacramento, including Haunted Houses, Spooky Train Rides, and other fun packed venues.  Some of these attractions are "relatively" kid friendly. They can be accessed via: Haunted Attractions in Sacramento.
We also have several area pumpkin patches, which offer last minute fun for the whole family to be enjoyed. These are listed at Sacramento Area Pumpkin Patches.

With darkness coming earlier each evening, please Stay Safe!  Have Fun and Enjoy the Holiday!

myrl jeffcoat: Busier Than a One-Legged Pirate in a Butt Kicking Contest! - 10/17/15 05:59 AM
Today is my family's annual Pirate Party.  It's a little whacko around my house, before everyone arrives. I always love the creativity, everyone brings to the event.  This year's theme is "Pirates Caribe."
These little crabs are attending.  They are but a small number of the total lurking behind the shadows.
They're fairly simple to create.  Twizzlers Red Vines for the legs. The eyes are available through Wilton, at many craft stores which stock cake decorating supplies.  The sandy beach is crushed graham crackers!

myrl jeffcoat: Napoli Culinary Academy and Cafe in Sacramento - 02/19/15 12:59 PM
Last Friday, a Friend and I experienced a delightful lunch at Napoli Culinary Academy and Cafe in Sacramento. In addition to providing cooking classes, the academy's charming cafe decor transports the visitor to another place.  The menu provides dishes of Italian origin, or Moroccan.  The choice is yours!
I opted for Eggplant Parmesan with Spaghetti.  A friend ordered Butternut Squash Ravioli. Both of these dishes were delicious.
Napoli Culinary Academy and Cafe is located at 1401 Fulton Avenue, Suite B, Sacramento 95825.

myrl jeffcoat: Sacramento's Much Needed Storms - 02/09/15 06:24 AM
It's no secret California has needed rain to bring us out of drought.  After a completely dry January here in Sacramento, we were finally blessed with heavy rains ushered in by a "Pineapple Express" from the Hawaiian Islands.  At one point on Sunday, I sat on my couch looking out the sliding glass door.  It was a relief to watch the skies as they poured rain. By late afternoon, a lull in the storms appeared.  A huge rainbow, pictured below, appeared overhead. When I turned the camera direction 180 degrees, I found trees making silhouette against a golden sky.

myrl jeffcoat: A Place to Warm the Bones - 01/24/15 07:41 AM
Last Monday afternoon, I was taken out of commission by a virus.  It’s been several days of chills, night sweats, and achy bones.  While doing couch time on the way to a mend, I couldn’t help thinking about one of my favorite places, a mere 20 miles east on the other side of the Sierra Nevada range from Lake Tahoe.
If one travels east over Kingsbury Grade from Lake Tahoe, they can find themselves at “David Walley’s Hot Springs,” near the early Nevada settlement of Genoa in Carson Valley.
The area offers rare beauty that differs greatly from season to season, and … (36 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Vetting those Urban Legends - 12/28/14 07:13 AM
One of the little aggravations of email and Facebook, is the mostly false rumors which are circulated time, and time again.   Some have been recirculating for years, while others are more recent.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if folks vetted these type of emails before they hit the “forward” button and perpetuated the myth?
Here are just a few I’ve seen just this past week.  I’ve put them through www.snopes.com or other sites which authenticate the urban legends populating the internet.
(1) Did Chipotle employees refuse to serve 8 NYPD officers, and put their hands in the air and say, “Don’t Shoot?”  This information has been deemed “Mostly False” by Snopes.  Here’s … (47 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: TBT: My Big Hat Days - 08/21/14 05:07 AM
I couldn't help but notice that many of the pictures posted as "Throw Back Thursday" this week featured "big hair" images from the 1970s and 1980s.  I have some of those too, but have mortal disdain of them, and can't quite muster up enough courage to post them just yet.
However, I will share this photo of me taken when I was about 18 months old.  While it wasn't quite my big hair days, it definitely was my big hat days.
Somehow, I think I was born at the perfect time and place in history.  I've seen some of the best decades. They … (18 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: A Little California Time Travel - 08/16/14 12:24 PM
Let’s take a little journey back in time for a few minutes.  Close your eyes, and imagine you are traveling back through centuries - long before white man had the audacity to show up and begin shuffling around the New World.
You look at your hands - they are brown.  They may be weathered; but perhaps not.  In your right hand is a long conical stone pestle - unless you are a lefty.  You are using this tool to grind acorns in mortars formed on a massive marbleized limestone rock outcropping with 1,185 mortar holes.  There are others in your group performing similar activity.  You know each … (27 comments)
