myrl jeffcoat: Fun Packed Halloween Events & Venues in the Greater Sacramento Region - 10/29/13 01:18 PM

The Greater Sacramento Region has more than enough Halloween events and attractions going on, to scare the bejeebers outta ya!
There are several Haunted Attractions in Sacramento, including Haunted Houses, Spooky Train Rides, and other fun packed venues.  Some of these attractions are "relatively" kid friendly. They can be accessed via: Haunted Attractions in Sacramento.
We also have several area pumpkin patches, which offer last minute fun for the whole family to be enjoyed. These are listed at Sacramento Area Pumpkin Patches.

Recently our vicinity has experienced a spike in the number of pedestrians hit by motorists.  With darkness … (10 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: His Permanent Spot @ The River City Saloon - 10/21/13 10:14 AM
As often as I have been in Old Sacramento, there is one place I hadn’t stepped inside of.  It is The River City Saloon on 2nd Street.  While walking by the door a few days ago, I captured the photo of this stone faced guy occupying his rightful place at the bar.  The River City Saloon is family friendly, serves great deli style sandwiches, and sarsaparilla brewed exclusively for the saloon’s exclusive use by River City Brewing Company, also situated in Old Sacramento.
We have been having especially glorious 80-degree days in Sacramento this autumn, providing perfect opportunities to enjoy special sights around the … (21 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: The Milestones Along Life’s Travels - 10/17/13 12:38 AM

I often don’t see the point of little observances we get caught up in.  I think we sometimes set up little goals, which are more like winning at Angry Birds, rather than just enjoying the process and interaction experienced with the activity or game.

During the years I have participated here on ActiveRain, milestones marking each 100,000 points would come, and they would go.   More often than not, it would be another member, who would remind me a milestone had been observed.  It seemed a little embarrassing to realize I hadn‘t announced, or written about each, as they arrived and passed..

myrl jeffcoat: Great Family Friendly Old Sacramento Halloween Events - 10/12/13 07:30 AM
The pages of the calendar continue to fall as rapidly as the leaves of autumn.

There are two fun-filled events in Old Sacramento to help locals and visitors celebrate the season.  They are as follows:

The Sacramento Southern excursion train will provide passage for the “Spookomotive” event.  Tickets are available on a first-come basis at the Central Pacific Station in Old Sacramento, on the day of the ride.  The frightful, but family friendly experience features a 40-minute train ride, along the Sacramento River, in a spooky Halloween decorated environment.  For more information about this event, visit: “Spookomotive.”

myrl jeffcoat: The Battle With The Sink Strainer a Challenge That Must Be Met! - 10/10/13 06:21 AM
On July 27th 2005, The Onion ran the headline, “War on String May Be Unwinnable, Says Cat General.”
However, my 6-month old kitten, Reuben, proclaims that is old news, and “The Battle With the Kitchen Sink Strainer is a Challenge That Must Be Met.”

Privately, Reuben has shared with me, that the workout with the sink strainer helps him alleviate stress, which comes from worrying about the psychological wellbeing of the 7% of Americans, who currently approve of Congress.

myrl jeffcoat: Sacramento Housing Statistics for September 2013 vs. September 2012 - 10/09/13 03:36 AM
Statistical data for Sacramento County home sales demonstrates the number of property listed FOR SALE in comparison to the percentage transitioning to PENDING status or SOLD is continuing improvement from a year ago.
Although the number of homes listed FOR SALE remains low, increased home values in our region are allowing more homeowners to become equity sellers once again. This factor has once troubled homeowners, who once felt unable to sell without entering a short-sale environment, to once again consider selling, and many are doing so, helping to provide valuable inventory to the marketplace.
Last month Sacramento County recorded a 65.2% … (4 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Apple Hill - A Harvest Time Delight - 10/06/13 01:58 AM
At least once each autumn, I hope to have an opportunity to travel highway 50 east, 40 miles or so, out of Sacramento, and visit Apple Hill during harvest time. So yesterday, when my son called and asked if I wanted to take the drive, I readily accepted.
Cradled in the arms of the Sierra Foothills Apple Hill comes alive this time of year, providing delight for all who visit.
Originally, Apple Hill was a collection of approximately 16 ranches or orchards. Today it boasts more than 50 ranches including Christmas tree growers, wineries, a micro-brewery, Spa, vineyards, and pumpkin patches.

myrl jeffcoat: Perfect Combination: Chanel - Ella's - Lightfoot - Mermaid - 10/03/13 01:47 AM
I remember it was mid-summer when fellow ActiveRainer, Elizabeth Weintraub, rang me up, and said, “how’d you like to go to a Gordon Lightfoot concert?” She had managed to latch onto a pair of front row seats. However, Elizabeth’s husband, Adam, was going to be out of town. Of course I did what any self-respecting human, who had lived through the 1970s would do. I answered, YES!
The summer continued at its busy pace. Before I knew it, the awaited concert arrived last evening!

The singin’ and strumming’ wasn’t to begin at the Crest Theater in downtown Sacramento until 8:00 pm, providing plenty … (23 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: America’s Nature Shuttered - 10/01/13 01:09 PM
With many doors of government being closed for business this morning, it also reminds us the crown jewels of our National Park system are also shuttered.
While the nation awaits Congress to set aside dysfunction, to do the people’s business, here are a few pictures of America's natural treasure, behind closed gates!

Bryce Canyon - Utah

myrl jeffcoat: Delightful Music in a Glass - 09/28/13 09:28 AM

The pages of the 2013 calendar are falling as swiftly as leaves in autumn. It is when golden hues find way to nature’s foliage, that a pleasant drive to California Wine Country in Napa Valley, is ripe for the taking.
One of my favorite wineries is Beringer in St. Helena. As I approach Beringer on the ribbon of road meandering along Napa-Sonoma vineyards and wineries, the limited words and names of my French vocabulary, play in my head - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Gamay Beaujolais - rhythmic names which often produce delightful music in a glass!

myrl jeffcoat: Farm to Fork Week in Sacramento - 09/23/13 11:20 AM

This morning, Sacramentans had an opportunity to witness something they don’t see every day of the week. And, for those who say Sacramento is a “cow town,” yes, and we’re proud of it!
An old fashioned cattle drive across the Tower Bridge from West Sacramento, on down Capitol Mall, was a special experience for anyone witnessing it. For awhile, I had visions of running with the bulls at Pamplona. However, the event showcases Sacramento’s rich heritage as America’s Farm to Fork capital.
If you wish to know more about “Farm to Fork Week”, you'll likely get different answers depending on who … (19 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: What's a Miracle? - 09/18/13 02:53 AM
What's A Miracle?

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child - our own two eyes. All is a miracle.  ~Thich Nhat Hanh

myrl jeffcoat: Intriguing Viewing - "HANK: Five Years from the Brink" - 09/16/13 09:35 AM
Since September 2008, I have attempted to soak up as many documentaries about the near collapse of the U.S. economy, and the behind the scenes workings to prevent it.

This afternoon, I watched the 1 hour 26 minute documentary titled, “HANK: Five Years from the Brink.”  It has been released to Netflix and can be streamed for your viewing.
It was riveting to watch then U.S. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, talk about those critical three September weeks in 2008, when banks and financial markets were in near sudden freefall.
At the time of the crisis, the largest 10 banks held 50% of asset … (17 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Negotiated Peace in a Garden - 09/13/13 10:56 AM
My garden is normally a peaceful place! However, this late summer has brought an army of pests, the likes of which I haven’t seen before. It is the spiders that concern me most. There are Black Widows and Garden Spiders, which can harm when they bite.
To remedy, I brandished a jug of insecticide with sprayer, while trying to win the battle, if not the war! When I reached a remote section of my yard, I came across this little lady, praying (or preying) that I wouldn’t induce chemical warfare against her. We negotiated a bit, while she promised to only eat Aphids … (20 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: California Wildfire Protection and Preparedness - 09/09/13 08:01 AM
When it comes to wildfires, California has had a rough year!  It has not only been the “Rim” fire, in and near Yosemite National Park, which continues to burn while only 80% contained.  In recent days there have been several smaller fires along the American River Parkway in the Greater Sacramento region.  At least 4 of the American River Parkway fires have been fairly close to my home.   It is sad to see the devastation and stress these fires place on natural habitat and wildlife.
However, there is protective action homeowners, especially rural homeowners, can make to aleviate some risk to personal … (23 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Labor Day Weekend Activities in Sacramento - 08/30/13 10:41 PM
I am always happiest when family and friends come to Sacramento on Labor Day weekend.  Our city has many activities to help celebrate the holiday, the quickly approaching end of summer.
One of the neatest events taking place currently is the 15th Annual Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento.  The 4 day Gold Rush Days event began yesterday, and will continue on through Monday, September 2nd.
The imagination is given permission to slip back 160+ years or so, to the city’s early beginnings, and the 1850s California Gold Rush.

Admission is FREE for Gold Rush Days. For more information visit: http://www.historicoldsac.org … (25 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Should You Take That Over-Priced Listing? Maybe! - 08/25/13 06:01 AM
You are in the middle of a listing appointment when the seller explains they want X number of dollars for their property.  You’ve done your homework with the neighborhood comparable sales, and the seller’s price is significantly inflated from that data.  Should you take the listing at seller’s price?  Well maybe!
I know this opinion will fly in the face of what real estate professionals believe and wish to practice when listing properties for sale.  I’m one of them!  However, in my past there is an experience that particular wisdom didn’t serve me well.  It was back in 2005 when I had … (67 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: FHA Waives Foreclosure Waiting Periods - 08/20/13 03:26 AM
This morning when I opened my email, I found an important message from longtime Greater Sacramento Senior Loan Consultant, Scott Filby of Comstock Mortgage
Scott announced that effective immediately, FHA is waiving foreclosure waiting periods, via its “Back To Work - Extenuating Circumstances” Mortgage Program!
FHA is allowing for the consideration of borrowers who have experienced an Economic Event and can adequately document that:
(1) Certain credit impairments were the result of a Loss of Employment or a significant loss of Household Income beyond the borrower’s control.
(2) The borrower has demonstrated full recovery from the event
(3) The borrower has completed housing counseling.
This is exciting … (13 comments)

myrl jeffcoat: Huddling With Wild Turkeys Isn't The Same as Working With them - 08/18/13 12:27 PM
This afternoon the sky near my home quickly filled with smoke.  When an overhead helicopter began dumping water on the source, I jumped on my bike and headed the short distance to the American River Parkway, to determine a more precise location of the flames.  The Parkway has experienced several fires in recent weeks, but this latest was within a couple blocks of home.
While I huddled with a flock of Wild Turkeys, we contemplated the fate of our homeland, while firefighters quickly extinguished threats to our habitat.
All in all, it has been a really good Sunday!
