yosemite: When We Lose The Great Ones! - 08/12/14 10:35 AM
This morning I was going through old photos taken in the 1960s, when I came across this one below.  I snapped this picture back in summer of 1967.  We had taken a vacation, in the pictured GMC pickup, with a camper shell.  The destination was Yosemite National Park.  The famous Wawona Tree was one of main attractions in the Mariposa Grove at Yosemite.  Sadly it fell over in early 1969.
In earlier generations, the Giant Sequoia trees weren’t as cared for.  Outrageous things would sometimes happen to them.  For example, this tunnel through this tree was cut in 1881 as a … (41 comments)

yosemite: America’s Nature Shuttered - 10/01/13 01:09 PM
With many doors of government being closed for business this morning, it also reminds us the crown jewels of our National Park system are also shuttered.
While the nation awaits Congress to set aside dysfunction, to do the people’s business, here are a few pictures of America's natural treasure, behind closed gates!

yosemite: The Mariposa Grove @ Yosemite - 05/26/13 01:43 PM
On Friday while grandson, Baron and I were visiting Yosemite National Park, we made certain to head toward the Mariposa Grove near Yosemite’s South Entrance, after visiting the Valley Floor.
The Mariposa Grove is home to perhaps some of the largest living things on Earth, Giant Sequoias.
Some of the oldest of these remarkable redwood trees are believed to extend beyond an age of 3,000 years.  It can be difficult to photograph them in their entirety, simply because we are reminded of a line from an old 1950s Gloria Swanson flick, "Sunset Boulevard."  Swanson playing the part of Norma Desmond had two … (20 comments)

yosemite: Yesterday @ Yosemite - 05/25/13 04:48 AM
These past few weeks have been so incredibly busy in comparison to my usual pace.  One grandson graduated from high school on Thursday morning.  Another grandson has been visiting me all this week, which has been fun.
Yesterday, we made a quick one-day trip over to Yosemite, about 140 miles from home.  I hope you enjoy these picture scenes from this glorious National Park Crown Jewel in springtime!

yosemite: A Stone Rabbit at 7214 Feet Elevation - 07/20/12 01:12 PM
Last week while visiting Yosemite National Park with my grandson, I spotted this massive stone formation that reminded me a little of a lop-eared rabbit.  You can see from the trees and brush in the background and foreground, that this is no small rock.
It sits immediately to the right of the Glacier Point viewing area (pictured below).  The elevation is 7214 feet.

yosemite: Glacier Point - Yosemite - 07/13/12 01:07 AM

In recent years, I have made several visits to Yosemite National Park.  During the dry 2007 draught year, Yosemite Falls in July had been reduced to a disappointing, barely perceivable trickle from atop the rocky face.
However, a return trip in last summer, June 2011, the falls all through Yosemite were hemorrhaging water like no other year I had seen.  The winter Sierra Nevada snowpack had been double the norm, which provided a bonanza of natural bling for Yosemite visitors.
It has been said that Yosemite is the Crown Jewel of all America's National Parks, and after each Yosemite park visit, I affirm … (12 comments)

yosemite: Majestic Scenes - 06/11/11 02:23 PM

(Slide Show contains 10 images)
If your car has a sunroof when you first enter Yosemite National Park, it's time to open it.  Ditto for a convertible - put the top down.   At the park entrance gate, I hit the sunroof button, and simultaneously fresh pine air and sunshine flooded in.
On the road from Sacramento and through California Gold Country, I had been listening to the kicky tunes of Dire Strait's "On Every Street" album.  But at Yosemite, I thought it time to move on to the more reverent sounds of Luciano Pavarotti.  I cranked the volume up a tad.  There … (29 comments)

yosemite: A National Crown Jewel Sparkles Even More This Year - 06/09/11 03:27 PM

It's been said that Yosemite is the Crown Jewel of all America's National Parks.  Having been there on several occasions, I can attest to Yosemite's majesty.  However, several years of draught had turned down the water spigot on her magnificent waterfalls, and brought them to a summertime trickle.  Four years ago, I eagerly went with out of state visitors to show off Yosemite's grandeur, but found virtually no water plunging from atop Yosemite Falls.  It was very disappointing. But near the end of this long Northern California winter, laden with heavy rains and snowfall, I suspected facets and glimmer would return … (20 comments)
