As a realtor who has worked with many first-time homebuyers over more than three decades in real estate, I’m happy to share good news for first-time buyers announced Nov. 14 by Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa. Starting Jan. 1, 2017, the provincial government will double the existing land-transfer tax rebate for first-time buyers, from $2,000 to $4,000. In a news release posted on its website, the Ottawa Real Estate Board reports that its members sold 1,445 residential properties in July through the Board’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system. That is up by more than 100 properties compared with the numbers for July of 2013, when 1,336 properties were sold. The results represent an increase of 8.2 per cent over July of last year. The board says the five-year average for July is 1,317.
