The long wait is over. There is a new principal at the Nyack Middle school. Thre will be a meet and greet in the school cafeteria on June 28. School trustees hired Brentnall at their meeting Tuesday night. He will take over July 1, replacing Nicole Saieva, who will become Nyack High School’s new principal. Good luck to Nicole in her new position. Brentnall has served as principal of the East Brook Middle School in Paramus, N.J., since 2008. It has been some time since Baumgarts opened here in Nyack . I think when they first opened, like all new restaurants they were trying to work out all the kinks. There was some talk that the quality of the Nyack Baumgarts wasn't up to the other locations. We ordered takeout last night, and I am thrilled to report that the food was excellent. The vege dumplings were perfect, as was the sauteed Bok Choy, Snow Peas and Crispy Tofu. We called the manager of Baumgarts to tell him so.... After the legalization of same sex marriage in New York the village board of Nyack has decided to name John Shields, former mayor of Nyack our first marriage officer. Shields filed a lawsuit against the Orangetown town clerk and the state asking that marriage licenses be issued to same-sex couples. Shields' term begins July 24, when the state's Marriage Equality Act takes effect. The position of marriage officer is without salary, and will last for one year.

It seems Mayor Richard Kavesh had a change of heart, as he decided to give up his right to use the Nyack First party name. Trustee Jen Laird-White, who is challenging Kavesh for mayor, and Trustee Doug Foster created the Nyack First Party in 2009. The name must be registered and reserved annually, which Kavesh did before Laird-White and Foster could. Foster said Kavesh was within his legal rights but accused him of dirty politics. Kavesh said he had no intention of using the name. Mayor Kavesh will use the Preserve Nyack line.

There is a new dog run in Piermont thanks to the efforts that some local citizens put together. The Happy Dog Gallery in Piermont held a fundraiser and the Piermont Dog Run opened in May 2010. The board of trustees decided that the dog run could be on a village owned piece of land as long as there was no cost to the village. The fundraiser generated about $12,000, and there is even money left over to maintain the dog run. As of now, said Grace, the Piermont Dog Run has about 100 members and is maintained by volunteers. Well I have often marveled at the beauty of deer crossing our crossing Nyack and Upper Nyack's streets in search of good grazing- probably to the great annoyance of homeowners who have planted expensive flowers. Well yesterday saw a different visitor in Nyack. According to an eyewitness account, a bear was seen crossing Midland Avenue just north of Nyack Hospital at around 7:35pm Wed evening. Nyack resident Roger S. Cohen saw the bear cross North Midland Avenue. "He seemed to lumber across the road and disappeared behind the Nyack Community Ambulance Corps building." The Nyack school system is getting a new superintendent. His name is James Montesano. He is taking over after three years leading the Paramus school district. Believe it or not he has three brothers who are school superintendents in the New Jersey area. All the brothers went off to college not to follow in their father's footsteps and stay out of the education business. They all gravitated back to education.
Montesano will have his work cut out for him protecting the core curriculum and trying to cope with state aid cuts and taxpayers who have had it with high education taxes.

Nyack will celebrate Independence Day on July 4 with fireworks at Memorial Park starting at approximately 8p. It is always a good idea to leave yourself extra time to find parking, and walk to your destination. I also think it is a good idea to bring along a light folding chair for maximum comfort as you view Nyack's spectacular fireworks display.

The last three days has been stressful for Nyack's 15,000 water customers. They were told not to drink, brush their teeth, or use the water from the tap for cooking or washing dishes. They were also told to get rid of ice cubes. It was found that the water contained higher than acceptable levels of coliform bacteria. Well we have now been given the green light to use the tap water again. Kudos to our elected officials for fixing the problem in such a short amount of time. Lugging the bottled water was not fun.
