upper nyack: Summer Camp in Nyack and Rockland County
- 05/15/14 12:07 AM
It’s that time of the year again where parents with young children have to figure out what their kids are doing this summer. Thankfully for parents in Rockland County there are many choices in all price ranges. Depending on the age of your kids the first decision would be day camp versus sleep away camp. Sleep away is charged with emotion on both parent and children’s part. Kids are usually pretty excited to go on a summer adventure, and parent who are considering sleep away for the first time are full of worry. Before choosing a camp try and get recommendations

upper nyack: Storm Arrives in Nyack
- 02/04/14 07:39 PM
Hopefully we will not lose power here in Rockland County, but in case we do and you are going to use a generator please remember the following points . Before installing a generator, be sure to properly disconnect from your utility electrical service. Have your generator installed by a licensed electrician. Operate generators outside, away from house. Never run a generator indoors. Carbon monoxide gas from the generator’s exhaust can spread throughout enclosed spaces. Fuel spilled on a hot generator can cause an explosion. If your generator has a detachable fuel tank remove it before refilling. If this is not possible,

upper nyack: Nyack Farmer's Market To Soon Be Open On Saturdays
- 01/26/14 08:39 PM
Great news the Nyack Farmer's Market will now be here in Nyack on both Thursdays and Saturdays starting this summer. This is a no brainer. People who work 9-5 were not able to shop on Thursdays as the market closed at 2. The Nyack village board sensitive to local business needs questioned shop owners before approving the Saturday Farmer’s Market and found overwhelming support for the idea. Kudos to the Nyack Chamber of Commerce, Nyack Village Board, and the Nyack Farmer’s market for implementing such a great idea.

On Saturday night the Nyack Park Conservancy hosted the Deckade fundraiser. To help collect money to build a local skate park we charged between $50-$100 for admission and inside had a silent auction and raffled off some Chocolate Skateboards product. There were free drinks, food a live band and a DJ. As an added treat the Bobshirt Skateboard Collection was on view which includes decks from the 1990′s including brands like Chocolate, Real, World Industries, Cream, Blind, Plan B, 101, and Planet Earth. The evening was a great success and we raised over $12,000. As president of the Nyack Park Conservancy

upper nyack: Nyack School Bond Referendum Passes
- 10/29/13 11:00 PM
Well the voters have spoken, and the School Bond Referendum Bond has passed. Very powerful emotions and complicated issues made this election one where word of mouth and the internet both insured a high turnout which is always good for the democratic system. Political apathy has never been an issue in Nyack. upper nyack: Nyack Barber Shop
- 09/07/13 10:25 PM
From time to time I like to highlight a village merchant that for me exemplifies the joy of being part of a close knit community such as Nyack. The Nyack Barber Shop on Main Street is just one of the those places. The owners name is Vlad, and he always has a warm smile, and is genuinely happy to see you when you come through his door. His shop harks back to an almost bygone era where the barber shop was a place for community members to catch up with local gossip and talk politics as well. You can also

- 08/26/13 10:35 PM
The Nyack Village Board voted to approve financing for the repaving of local streets, begin improvements to Nyack Brook and Memorial Park. The first phase of grinding up existing pavement begins 9/9 and paving begins one week later on 9/16. The board will borrow about $1,000,000. About half of that will be for the purchase of new, heavy equipment to replace aging equipment at the Nyack Highway Department, and $255,000 will go towards the street repaving. upper nyack: Sprinklers in Nyack Memorial Park Working Again
- 08/20/13 12:35 AM
According to Jim Politi, Nyack Village Administrator our recreational sprinklers are now operational. It was very unfortunate that a broken part took the sprinklers offline for most of the summer, but they are back. Weather forecasts say that it will be a hot week so take the kids and a picnic lunch and cool off down by the river in Nyack Memorial Park. Very important - you rest your hand on the the black cover of the short green post. The heat from your hand activates the sprinklers – very high tech. J

upper nyack: Nyack Wins Benjamin Moore Contest
- 07/08/13 10:15 PM
Well it’s official – the Village of Nyack downtown is about to get a jolt of color. The announcement this past Monday that Nyack had received enough votes to win the Benjamin Moore “Main Street matters” campaign is exciting news for all of us. Merchants and residents alike are excited for work to begin. I think it’s great that the program will hire local painters to do the work, and those merchants and building owners get to choose their colors. It’s a win-win situation. Nyack was the only community in New York State and one of four in the northeast to

upper nyack: HBO Coming To Nyack
- 06/13/13 10:27 PM
It looks like Nyack will be a location for a new HBO series called “The Leftovers”. The story is based on the best-selling novel by Tom Perrotta. Interesting story where 2 percent of the population just vanishes. It reminds me of a Peter Weir film “Picnic at Hanging Rock” where a class from a girls school in Australia go on a picnic and a few of the girls just vanish-very mysterious. The casting director will be looking for townspeople to be extras for the series. Anyone interested is encouraged to audition from 4-7 at the Nyack Center this Saturday. Justin Theroux
