historic sites: Winter at Edwardsville's 1820 Col. Benjamin Stephenson House - 12/29/09 04:32 AM
This week we had one day of lovely winter wonderland scenery here in Edwardsville, Illinois.
I happened to be driving near the 1820 Col. Benjamin Stephenson House just after the snowfall stopped and snapped this idyllic picture.
You might think things would be quiet for the historic home in the winter, but just the opposite is true. 
The house is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m.
Docents in period costumes interpret Illinois life in the 1820s inside the two-story, Federal-style house. The home's four rooms have period furnishings, original woodwork … (0 comments)

historic sites: Homes for Sale in Elsah, Illinois - 07/26/09 05:25 PM
As regular readers of this blog know, one of my favorite things to do here in St. Louis' Illinois suburbs is to drive along the Great River Road from Alton, Illinois to the towns of Elsah and Grafton, Pere Marquette State Park and beyond. The combination of the mighty Mississippi River flowing alongside the soaring limestone bluffs is magical.
Today we'll take a closer look at Elsah, a charming enclave tucked among the limestone bluffs on the Mississippi River. The entire village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s.
