madison county illinois: The Three F's: FEMA, Flood Insurance and...Frustration in Madison County, IL - 12/30/09 02:31 PM

UPDATE: Monday, January 4, 2010, FEMA announced that new flood insurance maps for the St. Louis area will be delayed until at least 2011.
That means property owners in low lying parts of Madison County won't be faced with steep increases in flood insurance premiums for at least another year.  <!--[endif]-->
Senator Dick Durbin and Congressman Jerry Costello had asked FEMA for the delay to give officials more time to devise a plan for the levees and to begin any needed repairs.

madison county illinois: Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Madison County, IL - 12/30/09 08:52 AM

For details, you can call the recycling hotline at 618-296-6647 … (0 comments)

(Buy Green Acres from Amazon by clicking on the image link to the right.)
The Douglases faced untold problems with their move from the city to the country. They climbed a telephone pole to make a phone call, dealt with a bumbling ag extension agent and were visited by … (0 comments)

madison county illinois: Connect with the Mississippi River in Madison County, Illinois - 11/08/09 09:43 AM

The poet T.S Eliot, who was born in St. Louis, called the Mississippi River, "a strong, brown god."  The river, he said, had a more profound influence on his life and his work than anything else in his past.
Here in St. Louis' Illinois suburbs we don't always embrace the "strong brown god," which is the overwhelming geographic feature  of our region, as closely as we should.
Sure we drive across the bridges to and from the neighboring state of Missouri, but aside from remarking that the river looks high or low, we don't pay much attention to the amazing … (1 comments)
