listening: Are you being heard? - 11/10/22 08:08 AM
Listening is hard, very hard, because there are so many distractions. I was in a class the other day and was looking around and noticed how many people were looking at their cell phones as the class was being taught. Our attention is very short, and we reach for stimulation rather than working at listening.
How often do you get introduced to someone and thirty seconds later cannot remember their name? I know I do, because at that initial meeting we are sizing them up, looking at their clothes, making assumptions about them and getting a read. But, we are not listening … (32 comments)

listening: Tell me more? - 06/27/22 10:14 AM
Communication is so vital in our business. I have read several posts today, where it mentions listening. I discovered a while back, that when I listened, what I was really doing was waiting for a break to say my witty comments, or story and was not really focused on what the other person was saying.
It was hard for me to face the fact, that I viewed conversation as a competition which I wanted to consider I had won at the end. I read many books about self improvement and none really tackled listening.

I realized several years ago that I viewedmany conversations as a war to be won and I have worked to change my position. Often whilst listening I was already formulating my response, preparing to speak before I heard everything said. This often led to interruptions. It is hard work to listen, to … (27 comments)

listening: What's your point? - 02/12/15 10:20 PM
What's your point?
I am trying to listen more, but find the more I listen, the more people like to talk, and talk and talk. I know the premise that the more you let people talk the more they like you, but I am actually happy to be liked a little less if they would just stop talking.
Many people talk because they want affirmation, they want you to listen and that makes them feel good in themselves. They may not actually have a lot to say, but they say it many different ways. I know.
The most confusing thing I … (4 comments)
