main line: Valley Forge - 06/18/11 08:23 AM
Valley Forge is minutes from our house. It's beauty often taken for granted, but sometimes an early morning walk just allows you to capture the joy of living so close to something so esoteric, the history, the beauty, the nature.

main line: Things to do in and around Berwyn PA this weekend - 05/20/11 10:17 AM
Like yard sales, take your pick among all the other great things to do in and around Berwyn PA this weekend. All week everywhere I have been, in almost every development there are yard sale posters and signs. If you are looking for a bargain or a possible find you can show on Antiques Roadshow this is the weekend to go browsing among the collectibles and treasures in everybody's yard.
We love yard sales, you can approach them with specific things that you are looking for or just go on a whim, but they are fascinating from the objects to the people, both … (0 comments)

main line: Running the rapids - 05/19/11 10:53 AM

Setting out on a journey is always so exciting, everyone is filled with enthusiasm, dreaming of the destination, thinking about what they are going to do when they get there, what they will buy, they often forget the challenges they may encounter on the way.
Real estate is just like that, there are many simple steps to buying or selling, everyone can do it, but there are many things that can go wrong with poor planning or lack of foresight. Anyone can get lost without a GPS or map, you need to know where you are going and how you … (0 comments)

main line: Devon, PA - 05/17/11 10:22 AM
Devon, PA is right in the heart of Philadelphia's Main Line. Years ago there was a Devon Hotel, now Waterloo Gardens and the Horse Show Grounds occupy the area. On May 30th 1922 President Calvin Coolidge visited the Devon Horse Show, one of the premier and oldest horse shows in the area for multi breed horses.
Our office sits right next to the Horse Show Grounds and from May 26th through June 6th it is difficult to get into work, but fun to see all the people and activity in the area. Our office usually helps out in the hamburger stand … (1 comments)

main line: Commuting to Philadelphia from the Main Line - check out this Open House in Strafford - 05/07/11 01:41 AM
If you live on the Main Line and work in center city Philadelphia there are not too many options for getting to work. Driving you can go via the Schuylkyll along the river and take your chances on traffic, head down route 30 Lancaster Ave and take some back roads, with a couple of alternatives when you reach City Line Avenue.
Or you can take the R5 Septa line, that runs the length of the Main Line reaching out to Downingtown and Exton nowadays, when I moved here 20 years ago, many people felt the Main Line ended at Paoli, nowadays … (1 comments)

main line: Wine down Wedensday - 04/20/11 02:54 AM
What is your first thought when you order wine? Red or white correct? But in Europe many people drink Rose, with an accute e, when it is hot. In America we have the misnomer of white zinfandel which is actually like  a rose, but much sweeter. Last year I also saw some white merlots which are similar.

I first tasted rose as a kid in Portugal drinking Mateus Rose, great flagon shaped bottle, you can get it over here. Not sure if it was that I was allowed wine by my parents or the shape of the bottle that I … (2 comments)

main line: Cheap and clever little idea - 04/15/11 12:44 AM
Economical and practical describe me to a tee. So this is what I dreamed up. I didn't know it was a clever idea, until somebody in CVS mentioned it. And then a few days later somebody in Petsmart and then in the Hallmark store.

I put all my "non valuable" store cards and library cards etc. on a little chain. I have punched a hole in them with a single hole puncher put them on the chain and throw them in my handbag. You know what happens: you stand at the check out and they ask for the card, which is all … (4 comments)

main line: Wine down Wednesday - 04/06/11 01:22 AM

I love friends with good taste in wine and food, especially after a long hard day working in the yard. Last weekend, as you may know if you read our blog, we tackled a long overdue project to chip/shred some branches that have been lying around. It is amazing when you have machinery how tired you get dragging the branches and small trees over to the machine.
Saturday evening we were just sitting back, enjoying some beer when our friends Bill and Nancy called and said they had a chicken they were cooking did we want to join them. As … (2 comments)

main line: At last a tedious job gets done. - 04/04/11 01:13 PM
Last weekend Nick and I finally got around to chipping ALL the branches of the 100 plus trees we  (read: Nick) took down. Before you say: awful to take that many trees down I'll ex[plain the why in a minute. This all happened some 8-9 yrs ago and there had been this massive pile of tree branches lying in our wooded section of the yard.
They had of course started the decompose and break up, but particularly in the winter when the underbrush (read: weeds) don't cover or hide the pile, it always was a huge eyesore. So at last we … (3 comments)

main line: Pre-Listing home isnpection or not - the pros and cons - 04/01/11 08:39 AM

Before you list your home for sale, should you do a home inspection? What are the reasons to do a home inspection and why should you not? Trudy and I disagree on this, but this is my opinion.
Reasons for doing a home inspection:
Transparency - allows buyers to see you care about the home and the transaction. You discover any issues that might arise later and cause the home not to reach settlement allowing you to correct the issues in your own time.Issues you find and correct now are cheaper to fix than when a buyer discovers them and … (2 comments)

main line: Gardening with native plants - 03/31/11 01:08 AM
We went to an evening at Penn State Great Valley Campus in Malvern. It was a talk about using native plants in your garden by Ray Murphy, Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturalist and Master Gardener from Nemours Gardens in Wilmington Delaware. Now I am all for doing that, although I have to admit, not fanatically so, but as much as you can.
What I han't realised is that native plants will support much , much more animal life and insects (for the birds and bats) than exotics.
Makes sense when you think about it, I had just not really thought about it  for … (3 comments)

main line: Friday evening - somewhere to go over the weekend - 03/25/11 08:58 AM
We had a wonderful evening at The Paddock at Devon on Wednesday with colleagues from our office. Whilst I did not end up with any "great" wines to enjoy they definitely had some good drinkable house wines. Also the ambiance was pretty good, although the acoustics make it a little loud. So if you are looking for somewhere to go over the weekend why not try The Paddock at Devon.

The bar is large and generally well staffed, you can eat at the bar or sit at a table. Generally well attended the noise level can be a little loud … (1 comments)

main line: Worth considering? - 03/22/11 06:36 AM

You have probably driven past Berwyn Squash and Fitness clubon Cassat Road many times, more than likely you have noticed their solar panels on the roof. But if you are looking for a new sport or somewhere to work out this club is worth considering. Not only does the club have great squash courts, trainers and competitions, but there is also some exercise opportunities for strength training, cardio and stretching as well behind that inscrutable facade. Now if you live locally, it also allows you to be green, in that not only does your club have solar panels, but you can … (1 comments)

main line: Wine Down Wednesday - 03/02/11 09:52 AM
Towards the end of last year i was invited to join the wine group here on Active Rain. It was not a hard decision considering we drink wine every day, yes us Europeans or as someone said in a class I was attending last week, "You're Nick the British Guy from Active Rain!"
So I decided as we have so many wineries close to us to feature some of these and their wines. However as this is more of an introductory post it may not be as informative as later posts.
If you follow my posts you know I attended the Philadelphia … (4 comments)

main line: Roofing mess alternative - 02/28/11 05:12 AM
Roofing mess and debris is one of the most ugly sides of roofing a home. Normally roofers drape tarps off the side of a house and everything slides down to the ground, nails, shingles, everything. it then needs to be picked up and put in a wheel barrow, pushed to a dumpster which then needs collecting at a later time.
However, at the Philadelphia Suburban Home & Garden Show this past weekend I saw a great idea at JH Roofing and Construction, Inc. Chatting with Tim Harley he explained how the system worked.

Here is bad photo of what they use. … (4 comments)

main line: Great offer for new homeowners - 02/16/11 08:11 AM
Great offer for new homeowners along the Main Line. I recently did a seminar with Deb Bettcher of Decorating Den Interiors in Devon at our local Easttown library and was amazed at some of Deb's before and after pictures for projects she has worked on.
Deb has generously offered any clients I refer to her a free intial consultation great for when you have just moved in and a 10% discount on window treatments, one of those things that most new owners need first.
I also added Deb to my list of contractors and other providers of services locally that many … (0 comments)

Philadephia Suburban Home and Garden Show scheduled for February 24th through the 27th.

The show is being held at the Great Philadelphia Expo Center out in Oaks. This is a great place to get ideas for landscaping and home projects as well. There are some different events planned including Mike McGrath from WHYY's You Bet Your Garden on Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of vendors for you to browse among for ideas and … (1 comments)

main line: Berwyn gains ground - 01/31/11 09:18 AM
Berwyn gains ground through the Tredyffrin Easttown School District demolishing their old office building, which used to be Berwyn School.

As you can see not much left of that old administrative building, just a couple of urns on pedestals and some old columns, hope they are going to recyle those,. Makes you wonder why they did not link up with a developer, hold on to the land and turn the building into apartments to rent along the Main Line. In the heart of Berwyn that would have been a win win for everyone, allowing the school district to earn some … (0 comments)

main line: Main Line Real Estate: Wayne PA a town filled with history and a great place to call home - 01/10/11 01:44 AM
Main Line Real Estate:
Wayne PA on the Philadelphia Main Line is a place filled with history and a great place to call home. Wayne developed over time, it was not till the first tracks of the railroad being laid in 1832 bringing visitors and J Henry Askin bought the first of three farms in 1864 that the center of Wayne began to develop.
You only have to look around to see the history is all around you, you just need to know where to look sometimes. Conestoga Road was originally an Indian Trail west to the Susquehanna in 1741, It was … (2 comments)

main line: Doctor's Best Immediate Medical Care opens in Berwyn PA - 01/05/11 02:12 AM
Doctor's Best Immediate Medical Care opens in Berwyn PA

New business Doctor's Best Immediate Medical Care opens in Berwyn PA providing urgent medical care, a mini-emergency room basically. They provide urgent medical care for breaks, cuts and all sorts of medical emergencies. They can do x-rays, lab work and sutures to name a few. So if you don't feel like sitting in the ER room for hours, and can get yourself to Doctor's Best Immediate Medical Care in Berwyn PA this may be a better option. They accept most major medical insurance, at opening they are still sorting out details with … (1 comments)
