horse: Albuquerque Downs Offers Exciting Night Racing! - 07/24/17 04:38 PM
Albuquerque Downs racing season is in full swing!
I was fortunate enough a few weeks ago to be able to attend the opening evening of horse racing at Albuquerque Downs. There were lots of exciting races, both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse, and a good-sized crowd to share the excitement. And racing has become even more exciting since last year, when the Downs was completely remodeled, and added lighting to allow "racing under the stars."
If you weren't able to be there for the season's opening, don't despair! The racing season at the Downs  continues untile September 24th, with night racing on Wednesdays, Fridays, … (2 comments)

horse: New Mexico's Mine That Bird loses out to another "Bird" - 06/08/09 01:38 AM
New Mexico thoroughbred Mine That Bird had a Cinderella victory in the Kentucky Derby, and jockey Calvin Borel thought he'd have another win in Saturday's Belmont Stakes, but it was the turn of another "Bird" to shine, instead. Summer Bird, another offspring of Birdstone, swept past his front-runner half-brother to win the final leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.
While it was a disappointment for the New Mexico owners and trainers of Mine That Bird, their horse did at least finish in the money, coming in third behind Dunkirk.

horse: I'm so lucky... to live here! - 05/12/09 02:26 PM
I'm so lucky to live where I live, here in Bosque Farms, NM! Take a look, and see what I mean! I've got
1. wonderful, "Land of Enchantment" sunsets and rainbows to look at right outside my front door

2. plenty of water to grow a huge, food-factory-size garden, despite living in a "desert" state

3. cranes, ducks, geese, and other waterfowl hanging out in my pastures and flying overhead along the Rio Grande

4. lush pastures for my little herd of horses (a necessity for a "horse … (9 comments)

horse: Make it "Yours" That Bird, and dream your dreams! - 05/08/09 06:30 AM
The Kentucky Derby this year was an incredible, fairy tale event. Most everyone now probably knows that the jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown was won by a New Mexico non-entity, a 50-to-1 longshot called Mine That Bird, an unknown, and a gelding, of all things, who'd originally cost his owners a paltry (by racing standards) $9500! With no other wins under his belt, this upstart horse was a laughing-stock at the begining of the race.
And the story gets better:
Chip Woolley, the winner's trainer, is a former bareback bronc rodeo cowboy, was on crutches from a motorcycle accident when … (3 comments)

horse: Hippotherapy VS Therapeutic Riding; Is there a difference in the horse-related programs? - 09/13/08 02:28 AM
A year or so ago I wrote a blog post about a therapeutic riding program in Albuquerque called "Cloud Dancers of the Southwest." (see http://activerain.com/blogsview/130006/Therapeutic-Riding-Albuquerque-Horses ). I described the program as "hippotherapy."
A recent reader of that blog emailed me to explain that there actually is a difference between "therapeutic riding" and "hippotherapy." This reader, Karen Molony, should know the difference, as she actually is a hippotherapist! She is currently working with Cloud Dancers setting up a hippotherapy program in additions to their already-existing therapeutic riding program. And she kindly provided me with a detailed explanation of the differences, so that I … (3 comments)
