new mexico: Belen Saves on Energy Bill with Solar Dishes - 03/24/10 05:34 AM
Currently, the dishes are not operating on weekends or holidays, due to a lack of off-site operation capabilities. However, according to DeCamillo, the city will save even more once the dishes begin operating 7 days a week.Since January, Belen has seen $1,000 savings on its electric bill, thanks to its new solar dishes, installed last July. By the end of the year, officials estimate the dishes will save almost 50 percent on the city's electric bill-- that's nearly $20,000.
According to Andrew DeCamillo, planning and zoning director for Belen, "The money ... goes into a general fund for other expenses … (0 comments)

new mexico: New Marketing Program Adds Value to New Mexico Cattle - 03/20/10 11:50 AM
Though producers throughout the state have been initiating value-added management practices for years in the hopes of attaining premium prices for New Mexico cattle, a new calf-marketing program in conjunction with the New Mexico Beef Cattle Performance Association (NMBCPA) shows more promise than previous efforts.
New Mexico bull producers are optimistic toward the New Mexico Gold Calf Marketing Program, which assists commercial calf producers in creating a more appealing package for potential buyers. The new program combines several previously successful value-added marketing techniques with newly concepted key elements: a strong genetic foundation in the calves, using only accredited, approved genetic (seedstock) … (0 comments)

new mexico: 200 New Jobs in Albuquerque Encourage Bright Outlook - 03/20/10 11:11 AM
Even in the face of nationwide economic strain, Albuquerque remains an economic stronghold. More new jobs, lower unemployment, and a more profitable real estate market than many other cities across the nation mean more opportunities for employment than one would be likely to find elsewhere.

For example, the Rio Rancho-based Sprint Contact Center announced Thursday that it planned to take on around 200 new employees for positions with competitive pay and benefits, including dental, medical, 401(k) and bonuses, as well as paid training and other perks.
The 12-year-old Sprint call center is looking for employees with 1-2 years' experience … (0 comments)

new mexico: June Real Estate Statistics in Edgewood - 07/13/09 07:57 AM
Real estate statistics for Edgewood, NM for the month of June, 2009 are a mixed bag. There are reasons for both optimism and pessimism about the Edgewood real estate market. Here's why:
The average sales price of single family residential homes that closed last June was actually UP from the figures for the same month last last, and up very considerably over the figures for June of 2007!
That's great news, and rather surprising given everything we're hearing about real estate prices falling nationwide.
It's not all good news, though. Only half as many houses closed … (2 comments)

new mexico: Name that Photo-- don't gulp! - 07/13/09 06:04 AM
OK, folks, who can tell what this one is?
I took it here in New Mexico on Saturday, but you sure wouldn't have to be in the Land of Enchantment to find one for yourself (unlike the flowery entry I made a couple of days ago, which no one has guessed yet!)

new mexico: Why isn't Rodeo our State Sport? - 07/09/09 12:12 PM
Apparently Rodeo IS the state sport in both Texas and Wyoming, according to a recent article in the Valencia County News Bulletin.
Why isn't it so here in New Mexico? All over my neck of the woods (Bosque Farms, in Valencia County) rodeo is a way of life for a huge segment of the population. Rodeos, barrel racing competition, and ropings are happening on an almost daily basis, at the Bosque Farms Arena and the two different arenas at the Valencia County Fairgrounds in Belen, not to mention at dozens of other arenas all over the rural parts of the state.

Not an equestrian? So what! Come on out and watch; you'll love the show!
It's always fascinating to watch these equine athletes and their riders perform in wide-ranging disciplines. You'll see true cowboy events like team roping, western show classes, speed events like barrel racing, English showmanship and hunter/jumper classes, and so much more. Come on out and check … (0 comments)

Two questions for you sleuths out there:
What the heck is it? Where was the photo taken? Here's the photo:
