palos verdes lifestyle: Real Estate Ups and Down--The Market Is Always Moving - 08/21/14 02:51 AM

I recently met with clients who took the summer off from house hunting. After the end of the school year filled with finals and graduation parties and a summer schedule of vacation, family wedding and minor surgery they decided a house hunting break was in order. With September approaching they decided now was the time to update and renew their search.
"Wow, the market has really changed." Those were the first words spoken after a quick perusal of recent sales and available listings in their neighborhoods of choice. Yes, even when we say, "Stop the music, I want to get … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Seeking Shade in LA - 08/18/14 08:20 AM

Saturday was the hot and humid kind of day best spent poolside or inside with the air-conditioner making the heat more bearable. Instead, I spent the day at the LA Zoo with my daughter's family. Yes, it was hot, but animals are savvy when it comes to staying cool. These flamingos were nowhere to be seen when most of their "yard" was flooded with sunshine. Not a single bird was out strutting its colorful coat in the bright sunlight. Yet upon our return they were out, but still seeking shade from the hot sun. They obviously have a keen understanding … (18 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Stretching to Keep the Sun on Your Face - 08/18/14 08:16 AM

I snapped this photo at the LA Zoo Saturday. As we observed the lion stretching his head to reach the sunshine, it reminded me we often have to make adjustments "to keep the sun shining on our face." Whether it be a job relocation, a new job or new responsibilities with a current employer, change, adjustment and yes, often stretching is needed to adapt to our ever-changing world and personal circumstances.
The photo is apropos for the real estate reality several of my clients are facing. One family needs a larger home for their growing family, but they are … (10 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Blurred Lines--Work, Personal or Both? - 08/08/14 01:44 AM

I'll be lunching at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes today with a client, or is she a friend?  Maybe we need a new word to describe the clients who move from business circle to social circle and blur the lines of where work ends and personal time begins.  I think "cliend" might work.  Or perhaps we keep it simple and just call it life.
A reveiw of any given day will reveal the blending of work life with personal life for me.  The unstructured day of a real estate professional will often have gaps between appointments, or … (106 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Remembering Paris--Gray Days Are Beautiful Even in L.A. - 08/05/14 08:43 AM

You don't go to Paris for the weather, but quite the opposite is true for Southern California.  On my most recent trip to Paris the sun made short and rare appearances.  Most days required an umbrella, but the beauty of the City of Lights was not diminished by the lack of natural light.
On the other hand, Southern California is know for its sunshine.  Most visitors are surprised to hear about May Gray and June Gloom.  Yes, the coastal layer of fog hugs the coastline most mornings during late spring and sometimes well into July.  Such was the case this … (16 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: 14-16 Million Year Old Whale Bones Found in Rancho Palos Verdes - 08/02/14 12:19 AM
“We find lots and lots of whale fossils in Palos Verdes all over the place so any backyard could house a fossil" -- Howell Thomas. I've seen a few whale bones on the walls and shelves of homes in Palos Verdes but never considered some might be of archaeological interest.  After all, Palos Verdes is a peninsula and we're on the migratory path of whales.  It's not unusual to see a live one in the water but to find 14-16 million year old whale bones high on the hill, now that's newsworthy.

palos verdes lifestyle: Silent Sunday--Peace and Calm Along the Coast - 07/27/14 12:42 AM

There are few things I find more peaceful and calming than the rhythmic rolling in and out of the waves at one of favorite Palos Verdes beach spots.   The ocean is the place I go when I want to refresh and rejuvenate myself.  I've found the solution to many real estate problems while walking on this very beach.

If you want to get your calm on, the coastal areas of Palos Verdes offer a variety of opportunities to walk along the water's edge.  It's one of the big perks of life on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Horse property in Los Angeles County--imagine that!

The coast is never far away!

The views are nothing short of amazing!

The sunsets are awesome--I captured this one at Nelsons Restaurant at Terranea Resort.

Yes, there are sandy beaches in Palos Verdes!

While reviewing photos and looking for a favorite of the week, I found my eyes pausing at several and decided to go the multi photo route this week.  These are a few of my favorite things about Palos Verdes.

palos verdes lifestyle: Sometimes We Miss the Memo - 06/29/14 06:34 AM

The Rancho Palos Verdes beach below Trump National Golf Course was designated a dog-free beach after a major brouhaha between residents who wanted to allow dogs and those who wished to make it a dog-free beach. Each group made valid points.
I remained a neutral dog owner, but I must admit multiple dogs running free reduced my desire to take my grandchildren to the beach for our beloved strolls and sea glass hunts. I scheduled my own walks to avoid weekend morning when the beach looked more like an over-populated dog park than a pristine beach.
Recently, I … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Peacocks and Jaguars - Palos Verdes Lifestyle - 06/13/14 02:23 AM

A Rolling Hills Estates peacock was in no rush to move out of the street and let my jaguar proceed on its merry way as I previewed horse property for a client yesterday.
Peacocks are a familiar sight in many neighborhoods throughout the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Some people love them, others not so much. They are beautiful creatures, but they can be very noisy and frequently leave their droppings on decks and sidewalks much to the dismay of local homeowners.

palos verdes lifestyle: Hiking in Palos Verdes--Palos Verdes Lifestyle - 05/21/14 02:30 AM

Yesterday was a glorious day along the California coast in Palos Verdes.  The hot temperature and winds were gone, and a cool coastal breeze was blowing through my hair as I hiked down the switchback trail to the ocean.
It was a whole body workout and spiritually refreshing with no traces of smoke in the air from the recent fires.  In my opinion, walking along the ocean is one of the best perks of the Palos Verdes lifestyle.  A recent study concluded, walking increases our creativity and enhances our problem solving abilities.  It seems the brain loves a good walk, … (9 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Two Natural Beauties--Palos Verdes Lifestyle - 05/15/14 04:24 AM

I'm constantly reminded how fortunate I am to live in the naturally beautiful coastal area of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Pacific Oceans gifts us with gentle breezes, rhythmic waves and an enviable year-round temperate climate. Yes, occasionally we must tolerate the hot, dry Santa Ana winds, as we are at the moment with our 100 degree temperatures and 3% humidity, but it's usually only a few days until the winds reverse, and once again roll in off the ocean offering relief and a return to the weather we're accustomed to enjoying.
I love the open spaces, the hiking and … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: At the Beach with My Grands for Mother's Day - 05/11/14 11:29 AM

Mother's Day was Southern California perfect with plenty of sunshine and big, noisy waves rolling in at the beach.  We could hear the waves crashing as we walked down the trail to the beach. My two-year old granddaughter wanted the waves to stop, so a short science lesson was in order.  :)
It was a lovely day and I hope every mother enjoyed her day as much as I did mine.

palos verdes lifestyle: Birthday Party at Ryan Park - 05/04/14 11:43 AM

It was fun and games for me on Saturday as I attended a birthday party at Ryan Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.  The weather was beautiful and there were plenty of tables beneath towering pine trees to protect us from the steady sunshine of a lovely May day.
My granddaughter was not the only one celebrating her special day at Ryan Park.  It is popular park since there is ample open space for the children to run and play.  The lovely ocean view parks in Rancho Palos Verdes are another perk of living the Palos Verdes lifestyle on the Palos … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Bye, Bye, Green Grass - 04/27/14 03:26 AM

In Los Angeles City upon the sale of a house it must be retrofitted with water saving devices such as low flow toilets and shower-heads.  I have always found this rather amusing and only the proverbial drip in the bucket when it comes to saving water.  Meanwhile the expansive lawns of green grass drink at least twice a week for 20-30 minutes.
California, yes the entire State, is enduring one of the worst droughts of recent memory.  On my planet the token water-saving toilets and shower-heads are no longer enough.  I'd like to see lawns converted to "desert" friendly landscaping, … (16 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Walking in Palos Verdes - 04/13/14 06:12 AM

Palos Verdes never scores high on the "Walk Score" test.  However, if someone devised a "Walk Score" for sheer natural beauty Palos Verdes would score off the chart!
This is one of the many photo opps I encountered on my walk along the ocean bluffs at Trump National this past week.  It's not a place I usually stop to snap a photo but the flowers, trail and waves were layered in sweet succession, and although my cardio workout may have suffered from the stop I'm sure it was offset by the therapy soaked up by the soul.
You have no … (0 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Rat Beach in Palos Verdes Estates--a Favorite with Parents and Kids - 04/13/14 05:47 AM

I decided to do a little research this morning by reviewing some of my most popular blog posts over the past seven years.  It was a good way to determine what topics have a timeless appeal to readers.
Not surprisingly, an early post about a treasured local beach is still racking up the clicks and views. With another season of warm weather fast approaching, Rat Beach in Palos Verdes Estates will soon be the scene of surfing lessons, picnics, boggie boarding and beach umbrellas in the sand.
Here's a snippet from my 2008 post, and I've included a few … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: A Walk at the Beach--Palos Verdes Lifestyle - 03/15/14 06:34 AM

Yes, I know it's still winter in many areas, but it's a sunshine-filled day in Rancho Palos Verdes.   The birds woke me up with their chirping and the bees are buzzing around my blossoming fruit trees. Spring is definitely in the air.
It's no surprise I often walk along the beach near Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes.  I snapped this photo as a reminder of how fortunate I am to work in such a beautiful area.
If you would like your morning or evening walk to include the above scenery, consider this an invitation to explore the … (10 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Paragliders Float Above Palos Verdes - 01/12/14 01:15 AM
Paragliders Float Above Palos Verdes

Not only are the cliffs along the Palos Verdes Peninsula beyond scenic with their hiking trails, towering bluffs and lapping waves of the Pacific Ocean colliding on the rocky beaches, it's also a wonderful setting to observe Brown Peilicans catching a heat thermal air wave and surfers catching an incoming wave or two.
Something a little more unusual is to see humans gliding along the cliffs, but the sight is becoming more common as more people discover the active lifestyle available on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Josh captured this video from a beach house in the Portuguese … (2 comments)

palos verdes lifestyle: Take a Hike--Palos Verdes Lifestyle - 12/30/13 01:47 AM

I'll be the first to admit if you're in search of an active nightlife, Palos Verdes is not the place to find it.  However, despair not, as all you must do to find it is drop off "The Hill" and hug the coast.  Once you hit Pacific Coast Highway you'll find the beach cities awake and hopping.
On the other hand, if you're in need of a daily dose of peace and serenity--a little rejuvenation for the soul, I can think of few places better than settling down in one of the most striking, naturally beautiful places along the Southern … (2 comments)
