activerain: ActiveRain: Powered By Optimism - 05/09/13 03:22 PM
There is a lot of talk on ActiveRain right now regarding the Trulia acquisition of Market Leader, which is the parent company of ActiveRain.  There are also a number of members of crying foul, believing the entire rationale for the Market Leader acquisition was to steal ActiveRain's content and Google Juice so that Trulia can more effectively compete with Zillow.
ActiveRain - I love you.  I would like to ground the discussion for a minute.

ActiveRain is ALL about the COMMUNITY
Having stewarded ActiveRain and watched Google for the past 2+ years, the valuable asset of ActiveRain is NOT the … (75 comments)

activerain: ActiveRain Q&A: Become a Reality TV Star - 03/20/13 04:32 AM
Have you ever visited ActiveRain Q&A?  ActiveRain has great SEO juice, particularly around "real estate questions."
And you never know who you will meet on the ActiveRain Q&A.   Many use ActiveRain Q&A as a way to engage with local home buyers & sellers (generate leads).  It is also a grat networking tool to meet other real estate professionals.
In December 2012, the following question appeared:

ActiveRain's own Greg Nino responded.  And to everyone's surprise, Greg is a finalist for the show now (3 months and five interviews later).  If the show gets picked up by a network, we may … (38 comments)

activerain: Birthday Musings: #39 - 12/03/12 02:35 PM
Thanks to everyone for their kind words and well wishes on my 39th birthday.  Many of you out there are thinking, "This guy is just a baby."  Others are thinking, "I can't believe he is that old."
Yes, that is because 39 is smack in the middle of middle age.
I had a great birthday this weekend and today with my family friends.  On Saturday, we went to Black Bottle Bellevue and then went to see the "Life of Pi" in 3-D.  Stunning movie.  I definitely recommend it.  I thought it dragged a little in the middle, but it … (10 comments)

activerain: Boston ActiveRain MeetUp:, Leads, and Expireds - Oh My! - 11/26/12 07:45 AM
Boston ActiveRain MeetUp:, Leads, and Expireds

September took me to Boston for the Council of MLS's (CMLS) conference.  CMLS is the largest meeting of MLS executives in the country.  With all the excitement over listing syndication with Zillow and Trulia, it was a good meeting to attend and learn how the MLS industry is thinking about these new companies in the real estate industry.

Whenever and wherever I travel, I try to organize an ActiveRain MeetUp.   I learn a lot from the members of ActiveRain on what is working and what isn't working on ActiveRain and in … (13 comments)

activerain: Shocking SEO Revelations from the 2012 Exit Realty Convention - 10/27/12 11:03 AM
Exit Realty's VP of Technology Jeff Lobb asked me to reveal shocking SEO revelations and speak on "The State of SEO" panel at the Exit Realty Annual Convention this year at the Gaylord Opryland Convention in Nashville, TN.  It was GREAT conference.  I have a lot of respect for the Exit Realty management.  They have a very different style from other real estate franchises.  I was tasked to speak on a panel focused on major SEO changes with Seth Price from Placester and Luke Brookhart from Onjax, two smart guys working for interesting companies providing IDX web sites for agents and … (32 comments)

activerain: Pinterest Traffic on ActiveRain is Exploding - 03/03/12 01:51 AM
Pinterest Traffic on ActiveRain is Exploding!
There are numerous web posts on Pinterest and using Pinterest for real estate.   I have been playing around with Google Analytics looking at traffic sources for ActiveRain this morning, and though the absolute traffic from Pinterest is modest, it seems to be growing faster than almost any other source, including FaceBook.
Below is a snapshot of the growth of traffic to ActiveRain from Pinterest from July 2011 through the end of February 2012.   I have intentionally left out the y-axis.  Pinterest is not a top 10 traffic source for ActiveRain, but it is driving … (32 comments)

activerain: The Importance of Infographics and Social Sharing to the Future of ActiveRain - 02/27/12 04:04 PM
**The Power of the Community is the Future of ActiveRain**
I received a good email from an active member tonight asking why ActiveRain is spending so much time and resource on surveys and infographics.  This leads to why social media and social sharing is so important to the future.
In 2011 and 2012, Google fundamentally changed their search engine algorithm and fundamentally changed SEO forever.  Keyword density is no longer relevant.  Editorial quality and social media are most important.  Major changes were the multiple Panda updates focusing on quality, the launch of Google Plus incorporating social media signals into Google's search … (61 comments)

activerain: Is Your Market Going to Be Hot or Not in 2012? - 11/15/11 10:09 AM
Take a moment and fill out the ActiveRain 2012 Hot or Not Survey!  The goal is to get as many LOCAL real estate professionals to predict what will happen in your market.  If we can generate enough data in your local market, we can then get really strong interest and media coverage for the results.
Did I mention you can receive 500 points by participating????
Real estate is local.
If you did a search for that phrase on ActiveRain I bet you would get tens of thousands of results. It's a mantra in the real estate business. Anyone who has been … (0 comments)

activerain: Best Practices of Real Estate Agents - Study by ActiveRain - 11/10/11 01:40 AM
ActiveRain has put together a really phenomenal study of what top producing real estate agents do to maintain an edge in the market.  Check it out.  Not surprisingly, top real estate agents spend 10x more on marketing, 6x more on technology and "broadcast" via social media.
What does broadcast social media mean?  Though everyone is using FaceBook, top real estate agents seem to be comfortable putting themselve out there on social media via Blogging, YouTube and Twitter where others can hear there message without being "a friend" necessarily.
Check out the study.  Click on the image below to go to the … (0 comments)

activerain: Tech Update October 24, 2011: Hiring Pivotal Labs - 10/23/11 07:07 PM
Happy Monday Rainers,
I wanted to post a quick technology update.  It's been a bit more than six months since I came on as CEO.  As I told the group in April and May, my first priority for ActiveRain has been and continues to be improving the underlying technology platform of ActiveRain.
We continue to invest a lot of time and money into stabilizing ActiveRain.  I hope you have seen improvements over the last six months versus where ActiveRain had been six months or a year ago.
Though we have made a lot of improvements, there continue to be some challenges.  As we … (79 comments)

activerain: Thoughts on Steve Jobs from a Young PC-Loving CEO - 10/05/11 07:48 PM

Thoughts on Steve Jobs from a Young PC-Loving CEO
The world is filled with memorials to Steve Jobs tonight.
I am not a Mac user, though I love my iPhone and there are probably 10 Apple devices in our house now.  I am not an Apple fanatic, like many people that I work with and admire.
Much of the coverage on Steve Jobs tonight is focused on the technology - the Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, iTunes, and the App Store.
I just wanted to thank Steve Jobs for his inspiration as a businessman and an entrepreneur, especially … (57 comments)

Hi Everyone,
Scheduled Maintenance: Monday June 20, 2011 at 9pm PST (midnight EST) may be the first time at ActiveRain when we are actually taking ActiveRain down (on purpose) to do some needed maintenance and work under the hood.  Karli has written a post on the planned maintenance and you can find it here at In The Loop.    Hopefully this doesn't cause too much disruption to the ActiveRain night owls.  Based on the comments on Karli's blog, looks like most members will be in bed at this time.
Friday June 17 Glitch: At approximately 11:30am on Friday June 17, we ran into a small issue with the database.  This … (10 comments)

activerain: ActiveRain Real Estate Questions - 06/01/11 06:03 PM
Hi Everyone,
Active Bob and I were chatting today about ActiveRain (as we do most days).
It turns out that ActiveRain actually has a Questions & Answers section, which is hard to find.  But the pages rank very highly in Google for Real Estate Questions.
Consumers are asking questions, but there are very few real estate professionals answering the questions (since it is hard to find the section).
Has anyone answered consumer questions on ActiveRain?  Why or why not?  Did you know this area existed?  Would you be more active if we improved our questions area?  Anyone generate a lead by answering questions on … (55 comments)

activerain: Best Wishes to Doug and Steven - 05/20/11 11:49 AM
With heavy heart, I regret to inform the community that our VP of Sales Doug Ching and our Blog Trainer Steven Graham have decided to leave ActiveRain to pursue another opportunity.  I was informed about their decision this afternoon.  We wish them well in their new positions.  Doug shut his mortgage company down in 2009 (in the heart of the real estate downturn) to come work for Jon.  Steven worked with Doug at his mortgage company.  They are a package deal and they travel together.  They are a great team.
Everyone here at ActiveRain wishes them all the best in their … (109 comments)
