activerain: Hey, We Are Being Watched, And Not Everyone Likes What They See - 10/14/07 11:44 AM
Rainers: This is an encore presentation of a post that was first appeared exactly one year ago today.  I repost it because much of it is still relevant.  In terms of milestones, this was the first ActiveRain post to ever cross 100 comments.  At the time, it was very controversial.  I confess that it made me squirm and lose sleep, as the comments became increasingly volatile.  Would it still be controversial one  year later?? It is completely unedited from the original 2006 version.

activerain: Let's Face it Folks, It is time to PAY Activerain - 09/28/07 08:43 AM
I have been talking about how this thing we know as ActiveRain will be monetized since the day I landed here in August of 2006.  Given the whole "situation" with Move.com, it looks like everyone is thinking about it now.  AR's owners (am I the only one who wonders WHO they all are???) deserve to make some money for what they are doing here.  No matter who they chose to buy them out, my guess is that many of us will not be pleased.  That is just logical.
So it is time for those of you who want this network to stay … (139 comments)

activerain: JoinActiveRain.com: You should Join ActiveRain - 09/18/07 02:50 AM
Our amazing Carnac inspired me last month.  Carnac always seems to know what is going to happen around here.  For months I had been meaning to buy yet another domain.  But life and business got in the way and I put it off until the Carnac post that spurred a rash of domain purchases.
My latest domain is JoinActiveRain.com.  If you are a real estate professional, and you haven't already taken advantage of one of the internet's largest and liveliest gathering of real estate professionals, you should.  I promise you will learn a thing or two.  Best of all, it is … (29 comments)

activerain: RIS Media: Someone else wants me to write for them for free - 07/16/07 01:30 AM
A few years ago I subscribed to Realty Times and for only $25 a month (I paid them), they let me write market updates for 5 cities in my market area.  Gee, what a great deal for me.   I think I had one consumer contact me in almost 2 years and I spent quite a bit of time actually writing those reports.  After a while I got this nagging feeling that I could be doing something better with my time, money and content.  So I started my own blog and published the same data there.  Amongst the nice things about … (30 comments)

activerain: Dang, Nobody Saw it! - 02/24/07 01:14 PM

I spend too much time thinking.  Maybe nobody else even cares about this.  Today I am trying to wrap my brain around figuring out when to post to get read.  There is obviously a lot out there on AR now.  Posting on a Friday night didn't work out too well for me yesterday.  I guess the rest of you all still have social lives, or no three year olds at home.  Sunday night also seems to have been a slow starter for me.
I figure we are all social animals.  If you post here, you probably want someone else to read it, … (70 comments)

activerain: Help Me Escape the Icy Michigan Weather: Join the January Blog Tour! - 01/16/07 09:13 AM
I've been seeing an "explosion" in the real estate blog world in the last few months with new bloggers springing up everywhere.  Even seasoned bloggers are adding new blogs or switching platforms and domains.  I am hoping we will see some of these newer blogs on the tour this month, in addition to those who've been around a bit longer.
For the last few months, we've run blog tours of ActiveRainer's 'other blogs,' or the blogs they maintain outside of ActiveRain.  Some of us, it seems, are crazy enough to maintain 2 (or more!) real estate blogs.  My other blog, for … (61 comments)

activerain: You Don't Have to Blog About Real Estate To Win Clients - 01/11/07 01:13 PM
This is a story about a blogging success, and how ActiveRain helped me to improve my business through a blogger who I think of more for his 'deep thoughts' than for his product.  As a matter of fact, it was Jeff Turner's blogs about life that made click through to his profile to figure out more about who he is.
Like many of you, I am  sure, I get really tired of solicitors calling me on my cell phone to tell me about the latest greatest product that is going to give me more business than I can handle.  One of … (59 comments)

activerain: The Tribe Has Spoken: Carnival of ActiveRain's Memorable Posts of 2006 - 01/03/07 09:41 AM
First, let me start off by thanking everyone who participated in the Carnival, either by nominating someone or by voting.  You gave us all a bunch of great posts to revisit, all 'winners' in their own right.  There were 49 posts nominated, and the Rainers whittled the list down to 11 of their favorites. A three way tie for 8th caused us to expand this list from 10 to 11.
No one can accuse us of being a shallow or insensitive group.  When I look at all of the top 11, I see compassion and passion, both about our profession and about our concern for others.  If … (40 comments)

activerain: Memorable Posts of 2006: Carnival of ActiveRain (Go VOTE!) - 01/01/07 12:37 AM
OK, folks, a few thoughts before we get started with the real fun.  When I had this idea, I was hoping we would come up with the memorable posts of 2006.  For each of us, that will be something different.  By memorable, I did not necessarily mean best or most popular or anything like that.  I meant posts that touched you or impacted this community in a meaningful way.  Maybe that distinction is difficult.  And maybe I did not articulate it clearly in my original post.  But I do think that we came up with a fantastic selection of memorable posts, … (57 comments)

activerain: Statistics! I LOVE statistics! Thanks ActiveRain - 12/29/06 02:04 AM
Did I miss the announcement?  ActiveRain has found another way to satisfy my not-so-inner Nerd.  This morning I found a new button on the "My Home" page.  Its down at the bottom on the left side.   "Statistics"
So what does it show me?  How many comments I've had on each post.  How many times they have been viewed and how many times they have been clicked.  Cool stuff, huh?  And it says that more information is coming about referrers.  Exactly the information I want to see.
Thanks ActiveRain.  You guys just keep making it better and better!

activerain: Carnival of ActiveRain: Memorable Posts of 2006 (Updated) - 12/27/06 03:49 AM
This month The Carnival of ActiveRain is taking on a new format for it's final episode of 2006.  Everybody can participate and vote, no matter how long you've been here.  It will be a truly democratic process.  We will return to the traditional format next month.ActiveRain was 'born' this year, and a lot has taken place.  A few people have been around since the beginning.  Lots has happened, and there are some great posts of 'enduring interest' that deserve a spot as among the best of 2006.  Hopefully we will end up with a true sampling: something about finance, something from … (85 comments)

activerain: Donald Trump Visited My Blog Yesterday (Another Question For the Rainers) - 12/20/06 12:43 AM
Yes, it does appear that The Donald made a social call on my Michigan real estate blog yesterday during the Yankee Blog Swap. (A big thanks to Mary McKnight and RSSPieces for a great idea well executed!) Though I have my doubts that it actually was the real Donald Trump, I had to capture that screen shot for posterity.  If you haven't heard of MyBlogLog, check it out.  It's a lot of fun to see who is visiting your site.  While having The Donald visit was a hoot, it got me thinking about other things.
There are many rewards to blogging.  … (45 comments)

activerain: The Privacy Protection Question Mark - 12/10/06 02:04 AM
Hi everyone.  Don't worry, I am not gone.  I just want you to think I am gone sometimes.
If you would like your Active Rain on-line presence to be turned off sometimes, just borrow that question mark.  When you want everyone to know you on line, throw back up your own picture.   More details can be found here.
Oh, yeah, if you decide to get one, let me know!

activerain: Carnival of ActiveRain: November Edition - 11/27/06 08:50 AM
Last month we held the Inaugural Edition of the Carnival of ActiveRain.  For those of you new to Blog Carnivals, they are essentially contests where the host chooses his or her favorite posts from those submitted. Last month our contest was from the top section of the ActiveRain categories, blogs focusing on the industry.  This month will switch our focus to blogs for consumers.  So, the categories are:   Consumer Categories: General Information About a Region Regional News and Events Market Reports Advertising a listing Winners, I promise you bragging rights, something impressive to add to your listing presentations or resume, … (52 comments)

activerain: How About a Blog Tour: The November Edition - 11/13/06 11:30 PM
Crazy as it sounds, I maintain two blogs.  The other blog, miOaklandCounty.com is slightly more local in flavor, but some of the content appears both places.  Since I joined ActiveRain, I've been exposed to many more people maintaining two (or more Toby Boyce) blogs.  And we've all got different approaches to running these two blogs.Last month we ran a blog tour, and we visited ActiveRainers 'other blogs'.  I learned a lot, and there seemed to be a consensus that people would like to do it again.  So, the time has come.  We are back.  The visitors are coming!
Here is how it … (53 comments)

activerain: Carnival of ActiveRain: Off Topic/Humor - 11/03/06 08:36 PM
Last night the Tomato completed deliberations over the Off Topic/Humor Category for the Carnival of ActiveRain.  Like the rest of the hosting panel, The Tomato was faced with a difficult decision and some very fine reading material.  So, without further ado, fresh from the Tomato's vine...(drum roll please...)
The winner is Linda Davis for The Good Old Days, Linda's reminiscence about high interest rates (illustrated by short skirts), long gas lines and agents prequalifying buyers certainly inspired a lot of commentary.  From what I gather, most of the agents who lived through the "Good Old Days" are glad that they are over.Congratulations … (22 comments)

activerain: Carnival of ActiveRain - 10/24/06 01:48 PM
The new ActiveRain category updates gave me a little idea.  This post has been sitting in my Writely.com account until Christine Forgione's post today helped me to realize where I want to go with it.  Many of you are familiar with Blog Carnivals.  For those of you who are new to Blog Carnivals read this.ActiveRain is proud to have the only husband and wife winners of the Carnival of Real Estate,  The Lovely Wife and Broker Bryant.  We also have had many Rainers make the top 10 in the weekly carnival.  Matt and Caleb have encouraged our participation in the Carnival … (42 comments)

activerain: Hey, We Are Being Watched, And Not Everyone Likes What They See - 10/14/06 03:05 AM
If you are serious about wanting to be a real estate blogger, there are lots of great resources out there and tons of good people you should be reading.  Some of those good people 'on the outside' of our ActiveRain cocoon are reading some of our ActiveRain blogs, and they aren't impressed.  This week, Christine Forgione and I had a little conversation about this piece from a very fine blogger, Greg Tracy from BlueRoof.com. Greg writes:  "ActiveRain is a real estate industry network and has some great real estate bloggers, but they also have a lot of crappy ones who post up … (199 comments)
