By Sam Walker on June 5, 2015
The planned Mid-Currituck Bridge is on the list. (NCDOT)
Transportation officials have approved a comprehensive list of proposed construction for the next 10 years that for the first time is based on a ranking projects according to their impact on a statewide, regional and local level.
The 2016-2025 State Transportation Improvement Program includes nearly 1,100 projects that highway officials expect to support the creation of nearly 300,000 jobs in the state.

currituck county: Outer Banks Plastic Bag Ban Expands To All Businesses October 1st 2010 - 07/01/10 05:01 AM
I am glad to see the plastic bag ban on the Outer Banks will be expanding to all businesses. As a full time resident I see first hand the mess these plastic bags cause as they blow all over the island. Many residents now us re-useable cloth bags every where we go and no one complains.  Now the trick is to get the word out to the millions of tourists. While recycled paper bags will be offered it would be great to if everyone who vacationed here showed up with their re-usable cloth bags. Spread the word to everyone you know who visits the Outer Banks!!

currituck county: Mid-County Currituck Bridge Scheduled To Start February Or March - 10/19/09 02:46 AM
The Virginia Pilot reported today that construction on the Mid-County Currituck Bridge is scheduled to begin in February or March next year. While there are still many details to work out it is seems that after 20 years the bridge will finally get built. Once completed, scheduled for 2013, the bridge will help ease the summer traffic coming onto the Outer Banks for everyone. Those tourists traveling to Corolla will save at least an hour of travel time if not more by using the bridge. For many it will be a huge sigh of relief when this bridge is finally done.

currituck county: Outer Banks Real Estate: Good September Numbers - 10/12/09 05:23 AM
The Outer Banks real estate market continues to put up good numbers as we head into the last quarter of 2009. For the 5th straight month the number of sold houses were over 100.  If the number of sold houses continues on its current pace in October it will be 6 months in a row. Buyers are realizing that the prices and mortgage rates are just too good to pass up. Out of the 126 sold properties only 24 were either foreclosure or short sales. There are some great properties on the market that are not distressed.
There has also been an increase … (1 comments)

currituck county: Corolla Getting New Bike Trail - 10/02/09 02:40 AM

It's great that Corolla is finally getting a bike trail. I see so many people walking and biking along Hwy 12 and it is very dangerous. The roads are curvy with lots of blind spots so this trail will help keep the locals and tourists safe. After all the money the government has wasted over the last few years of bailouts I am glad to see that at least some of it is going to good use. Below is an article from The Daily Advance on the bike trial.
Thanks to a $500,000 state grant, Corolla residents will soon have … (0 comments)

currituck county: North Carolina Senate Bans Plastic Bags On The Outer Banks - 05/15/09 02:31 AM
North Carolina State Senator and Outer Banks native Marc Basnight has successfully introduced legislation the ban all plastic bags from the big box stores on 3 coastal counties starting in September of this year. This trial program covers Dare, Currituck, Hyde counties and may be expanded to the rest of the state if all goes well. Senator Basnight hopes to reduce the amount of trash that blows around on the Outer Banks and help the environment due to the windy conditions that are prevalent all year long.I think it's a great idea and my family already uses cloth bags when we go shopping. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority put out a press release this week about the 3 options they have decicded to go with for the proposed new bridge. The options include a "No Bridge" option that was just added recently. That's right they are now  considering to not build the bridge and just do road improvements from the Wright Memorial Bridge all the way to Corolla. I can tell you that option is not going over well with the locals and local government. It looks like the wait will be over in 2013 when the first cars are able to make the trip across the Mid County Currituck Bridge that will connect mainland Currituck to Corolla. This will dramatically reduce the travel time , some predict up to 2 hours, for tourists that for years had to wait in miles of traffic to get to Southern Shores, Duck, & Corolla as they made their way to the Outer Banks for vacation. The bridge will also give residents and tourists another evacuation point in case of a major hurricane. The Mid County Bridge has been … (0 comments)
