seo: Ask.com Launches Major Updates - 06/05/07 03:01 AM
I just got my latest newsletter from Search Engine Watch and it discusses a new update to Ask.com that looks fairly interesting. Ask.com is making their SERP much more robust. They are calling it Ask3D and I like the way they are displaying the different steps of the search on the results pages. Users are given additional options to drill down to more relevant searches and get more information right on the results page instead of doing additional searches.
Ask.com has really been pushing out the innovation in the way they display results and I really like it but they really need … (4 comments)

seo: Yahoo Update - 05/24/07 01:38 AM

Yahoo Search Blog reported that they were in the process of updating their search index. I usually don't pay too much attention to Yahoo but I recently noticed a pretty significant increase in the number of visitors coming from Yahoo so I did some investigation. Unlike the last few Yahoo updates this one treated me very well. Our site had a pretty significant rise up the SERP on a number of different keywords.
You may want to check your stats and look at some rankings to see how your sites did. Obviously, Yahoo is not nearly as important as Google but diversification … (5 comments)

seo: Search Marketing in 2007: Part 3 - How Not to Build Links - 04/23/07 07:09 AM
Part 3 in my series discussing Search Marketing in 2007 continues the discussion on links that started in Part 2: Proper Link Building Techniques. The post discussed an overview of the proper way to build links to your site. Many AR members are very aware how much back links improve search engine rankings and how important it is to get good links. Of course since I went over some of the ways to get good links I feel the need to take the time to discuss some of things that should be avoided. Links are important but the wrong kind of … (3 comments)

seo: Search Marketing in 2007 Part 2: Proper Link Building Techniques - 04/19/07 03:21 AM
In the first part of my series of discussions about the Search Engine Strategies Conference in NYC I went over some new PPC features in Google AdWords. To read that post please visit my Search Marketing in 2007: Part 1 Post. Part 2 will have an SEO focus and in this post I would like to proper link building techniques.
Links, Links, Links
Most of you already know how important links are in your SEO efforts so I want to go a bit deeper and get into proper link building, improper link building, and touch on Social Media link building efforts. Google and … (4 comments)

seo: Google Spam Reports - 04/03/07 03:37 AM
I have not seen a lot of discussion here but there is always a lot of interest in Google Spam reports on other forums and blogs I frequent, mostly the SEO related groups. Google Webmaster Central Blog recently had a post discussing Spam reports. It verified some things I already knew but also shed some light on a few things I did not know about. Spam hurts everyone involved in the Internet from users to site owners and everyone needs to work together to limit it.
The real estate industry is highly competitive and is one of the top markets for … (2 comments)

seo: Links and SEO - 03/22/07 04:18 AM
An earlier post of mine discussed some common problems with real estate sites that keep them from ranking well. One issue that I did not mention specifically was the overemphasis on reciprocal links and Google Page Rank. What I mean by Page Rank is not where your site is listed in the Google search results but the score that Google has awarded your site. I am sure many people are aware that the Google toolbar shows a Page Rank meter but there is a common misconception that this is actually how Google currently sees your site. The fact is that Google … (4 comments)

seo: The Evolution of SEO and Search Marketing - 03/15/07 03:47 AM
SEO and Search Marketing is a constantly evolving aspect in the advertising world and I would like to look back at one of the biggest changes since these marketing methods first began appearing. The finer details have undergone considerable change and honestly I could go on forever discussion how algorithm changes have caused on-site and off-site strategy changes for site owners. For this discussion I want to talk about the overall goal of SEO and search marketing and how it has evolved since the idea behind SEO first took off.
When the Internet started it was designed as a place for people … (3 comments)

seo: Stand Out from the Crowd - 03/13/07 01:46 AM
The biggest flaw that I see in a lot of real estate websites is the sheer lack of originality and unique content. Now there are a few that stand out from the crowd and really offer something different but for the most part everyone seems to be working off of a few templates and providing the same content. Because of this user experience AND SEO placement are both being hurt. When a potential customer comes to your site do they think this looks like the last 10 sites I just visited or is there something extra here? Do the search engines … (0 comments)

seo: Real Estate & SEO - 03/09/07 03:17 AM
After reading a couple of blogs discussing SEO issues in the Real Estate industry I thought I would throw in some of my observations. The biggest issue I notice is how similar many real estate sites are. Many sites use the same exact layout, provide the same new stories, and show the same listings. The way most engines work causes a situation where most of these sites are going to be filtered out because the engine is seeing the same thing. They want unique content. To be successful we need to differentiate ourselves from the rest. That means writing unique content … (2 comments)
