owatonna minnesota: Spring, Where for Art Thou in Owatonna, Minnesota? - 04/20/11 05:59 AM
I really shouldn't complain about the weather we've had - it certainly didn't produce the tragedies that the South has had to face as a result of their severe weather.  But nontheless, this long flirtation with winter weather has brought all Minnesotans to the point of shouting in unison "enough is enough"!

We hope that Spring is a sign of homebuyers, buds on trees and flowers blooming, but it's also that time of year in Minnesota when the unwelcome box elder bugs return to stake their claim.  My house faces south and they love the warmth that it offers.  They love to congregate and … (0 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Don't Get Lulled into False Security - 04/25/10 04:13 PM
I don't know if you've experienced smaller town living - but many people in our area take for granted that living in a "small town" automatically insulates them from the evils of the world.  As nice as that thought may be it's not true.  Just this morning I started out on my morning walk with my dog only to discover various paperwork, notes, business cards, and "ID" on my front lawn.  My first thought was of my son - who I thought may have lost the contents of his wallet as he hurriedly left our home after changing from the prom dance … (1 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Time to Put the Skis Away - What an Adventure! - 03/05/10 03:37 AM
Well, the days and nights of cross country skiing seem to be melting away.  Not that I'm complaining about the sunny, above 30 degree days that we've been experiencing all week.  It's just that I was hoping for a few more opportunities to strap the skis on.  We've seen some beautiful spots around Minnesota this winter.  We toured Forestville State Park near Preston, Nerstrand Big Woods State Park between Northfield, Kenyon and Faribault, Banning State Park near Sandstone, Owatonna's own Rice Lake State Park, and of course, Kaplan's Woods.  We skied at 5 below zero and when it was in … (3 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Goals from 1989? How am I Doing? - 02/01/10 03:47 AM

As I attempted to rid my home office of a forest full of papers over the weekend I came across a list of written goals from December of 1989.  Wow - that was a blast from the past.  Number 12 out of 14 was to own a computer.  In that same office and spilling over into the basement, I also have 5 computer towers, 4 printers, 3 laptops (none of which I use anymore), so I guess that speaks to the importance of having written goals.
On a serious note, we'll be meeting this next week with each … (9 comments)

owatonna minnesota: First Place and a Great Cause! - 01/29/10 09:38 AM
About two years ago I attended my first Chili Cook Off and was immediately inspired and intrigued - mostly due to the fact that I was totally thrilled to learn about white chili.  I'm not a big red meat eater so to find out that chicken chili exists opened all sorts of cuisine possibilities for me.  I decided that when the hockey schedule (my son's) would permit I find a way to enter my own white chili concoction in the cook off.  It took two years to allow for the aligning of the hockey schedule and the Chili Cook Off, but … (6 comments)

owatonna minnesota: What's the Buzz in our Owatonna Minnesota Real Estate Market? - 01/15/10 05:54 AM
What's the Real Estate Buzz in Owatonna? The start to 2010 has been a bit sluggish so far - mostly due to frigid temperatures that we experienced during the Holidays and the first two weeks of the New Year.  We finally have temps that are above zero, and even getting close to above freezing.  Wow!  We expect to see listings increasing during the next couple of months as sellers try to take advantage of the tax credit induced buyer activity.  In addition, current homeowners can potentially benefit from the stimulus if they sell and purchase a new home.          We predict that … (3 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Recap for 2009 in the Owatonna Minnesota Real Estate Market - 01/07/10 04:42 AM
What's the Real Estate Buzz in Owatonna?   Sales during October and November picked up and we finished year with an increase in sales (by 28 homes) over 2008.  It seems that the first time buyer stimulus plan has been working.  We've seen a strong presence of those buyers in our market and that helps everyone. We predicted that first time home buyers would be the mainstay of the 2009 market, along with buyers relocating into Owatonna for their jobs, and it appears to have panned out that way.  One of my lending experts, Brenda Bednar (through Advisor's Mortgage) noted that … (0 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Owatonna Real Estate Buzz - 06/17/09 06:11 AM
We've seen some recent drops in the mortgage interest rates.  It looks like a positive time for buyers to think about moving. It's been a good time for buyers to find terrific values for homes in Owatonna.  Here are the statistics for Owatonna's market through 6/16/09:
Sold 111 homes at an average sale price of $137,108 within an average market time of 112 days.  Houses are selling for an average of 95.46 percent of the last list price and 90.18 percent of the original list price.  We're still down in homes sold and volume from 2008, but we're seeing that gap … (0 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Summer Energy Savings Tips - 06/05/09 08:19 AM
Now that summer is in full swing, it's important to remember that on hot, humid days electricity is in big demand.  As the day gets warmer, more and more electricity is demanded until a peak demand is reached.  Supplying the electricity to meet this peak demand can be very costly.  This is why it is very important to limit your use of electricity between 11:00 am and 7:00 pm.  Here are just a few ways you can help reduce the cost of electricity for everyone while reducing the demand on our earth's natural resources.

owatonna minnesota: What's the Buzz in the Owatonna Real estate Market? - 05/22/09 09:04 AM
What's the Real Estate Buzz in Owatonna?
Things were picking up in April and early May.  The outlook is brighter with increased activity.  It seems that our spring market is about a month behind - just like our spring weather.
We're predicting that first time home buyers will be the mainstay of this market, along with buyers relocating into Owatonna for their jobs.  According to my lending expert Brenda Bednar (through Advisor's Mortgage) she is taking applications from those two buyer niches.  Property issues are becoming more of a challenge with the increase in foreclosed properties, many of which have deferred … (1 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Appraisal Pendulum Swinging Too Far - 04/08/09 02:15 PM
Unfortunately we're seeing the appraisal pendulum swing a little too far.  We've experienced a couple of recent transactions that have been jeopordized by low appraisals.  These aren't marginal homes that have had high closing costs added to purchase prices.  These are mid to higher end homes (for our area) that have fallen short on their appraisal values compared to the purchase price.
Have you seen issues like this in your area?  Have you been able to keep the transaction together?  In one situation the seller had to agree to an $8000 reduction in price to keep it from falling apart.  In … (3 comments)

owatonna minnesota: Fire Safety Tips - 03/17/09 05:05 AM
There was a house fire in Owatonna on Sunday.  I've not heard any specifics, but it looked like the entire home was a loss.  Even though October is Fire Safety month, it's never a bad time to think about fire safety and prevention.  Here are a few tips and pointers to be aware of:
Get smart about smoke alarms - have one installed on every floor, replace them when they're more than  10 years old, and check and replace your batteries once a year.
Have a plan - have two exits from every room, choose a safe place to meet outside, get … (1 comments)
