activerain challenge: My First Home Purchase by Pat Starnes - 04/10/23 04:32 PM
Step into the time machine and travel to the mid 70's. Young and in love, my boyfriend and I were engaged to be married. I'm not sure how the topic of buying a house came up; I'm not sure we even discussed it. My parents had always owned a home, so we assumed we would own a home one day, too.
My dad worked for the largest employer in town, the local factory, so he knew a lot of people. He came home from work one day and mentioned an older couple wanted to sell their home. He asked if I was … (42 comments)

activerain challenge: My Favorite Fish Story of All Time - 08/29/22 07:38 AM
Fishing has never been a favorite pastime of mine, but my family LOVED fishing. Growing up, my parents would drag me and my siblings to a remote creek bank to spend the day in pursuit of supper. Both mom and dad enjoyed the sport. We grew up in a rural area with plenty of places to fish. I never knew if we were on a river, lake or creek, but you can bet my parents knew the best fishing hole.
Once as a teenager, I tried to fake being sick to avoid going fishing. I really didn't want to go. But as … (19 comments)

activerain challenge: 2021 Pumpkin Painting Contest in Brandon, MS - 10/31/21 10:23 AM
My pumpkin carving talents are limited, and let's be honest; scooping the "brains" out of a Jack-o-lantern can get pretty messy.
The secret for carving pumpkins has eluded me, but I admire the looks of painted pumpkins. Since painting and creativity appeal to me, the idea of a pumpkin painting contest was born.
The contest ran for a couple of weeks on Facebook. I created videos and encouraged adults as well as children to get involved. The goal was fun, fun, fun! And I wanted to increase my Facebook followers on my business page.
The rules were simple: Like my Facebook page, tag a … (8 comments)

activerain challenge: Brandon MS Seniors Enjoy Fall Festivals, Too - 10/27/21 09:19 AM
When you think of Fall Festivities, visions of pumpkin patches, hay bales, and children frolicking through fields come to mind. But why limit the activities to children? Adults want to have fun, too.
Last week, Castlewoods Place, a senior assisted-living facility in Brandon, hosted their Fall Festival. Several vendors participated in the event. I attended as a neighborhood volunteer and Realtor. Pre-pandemic, I visited regularly to call Bingo, play games, etc., but visiting was forbidden during the height of the pandemic. I missed my senior friends and they missed us. Fortunately, we slowly have been invited to select events over the last … (11 comments)

activerain challenge: Catching Up with Debe Maxwell - 07/15/20 03:40 PM
I didn't need an excuse to call my friend Debe Maxwell, CRS from Charlotte, but it was nice catching up by phone today. Debe has a lot going on in her life, what with her and husband Ray purchasing a lake home, arranging renovations, getting her current home ready for sale, all while managing a successful real estate business at Re Max Executive. I'm happy we took a few minutes (okay, 30 minutes) to visit and exchange anecdotes about the business, comical personal situations, and learning to live with face masks while maneuvering home inspections and showings.
Debe and I became "friends" through ActiveRain. I'm … (21 comments)
