things to do in brandon ms: Smokin' On The Rez Features Vince Vance and the Valiants - 08/27/18 08:15 AM
The weekend was full of entertainment at the Reservoir with events scheduled at both Lakeshore Park and Pelahatchie Shore Park.
When I heard Vince Vance and the Valiants were scheduled to appear at Smokin' on the Rez, I knew I had to attend. The act originated in New Orleans and traveled across the country for over 30 years, entertaining adults and children alike. They frequently performed in the Jackson MS area and I have fond memories of seeing them at the Dock, since closed.

Although it was a warm August afternoon, the kids stayed cool by playing in the reservoir. By the time the sun went … (12 comments)

things to do in brandon ms: Jurassic Park, A Chicken, And So Much More ~ Brandon MS - 06/09/17 02:12 PM
If you've ever traveled along Highway 471 in Brandon, you've likely done a double-take at the family of dinosaurs and the big chicken just past Grants Ferry Road. Hundreds of cars drive by on a daily basis. At long last, I decided to stop and inquire about the giant dinosaurs and discover what other treasures might lay beyond the winding driveway.
At the back of the winding road, I discovered a shop filled with interesting and unique memorabilia, and the proprietor of the establishment, Mr. Robert. I introduced myself to Robert and asked if I could take a look around and take some photos for … (22 comments)

things to do in brandon ms: Fall in Love With Brandon MS - 09/30/16 06:21 AM
Perhaps you are relocating to the greater Jackson MS area and wonder "Why should I choose Brandon? Is there anything to DO?"

I frequently hear this question from homebuyers who are unfamiliar with the metro area that includes Jackson, Madison, Ridgeland, Brandon, Flowood and Pearl. Once newcomers visit the area, however, they quickly fall in love with what Brandon has to offer.

While the metro area has a population of over half a million residents, Brandon is a bedroom community with around 40,000 residents. We have the convenience of nearby hospitals, universities, etc., yet still enjoy the advantages of small town living.

Since Jackson is the State Capital, the State of Mississippi is our largest … (11 comments)

things to do in brandon ms: Brandon MS - Barnett Reservoir Foundation Arts & Crafts Fair - 12/03/15 08:39 AM
The Barnett Rez Foundation sponsored the Second Annual Arts & Crafts Fair in November
at Lakeshore Park.
The Ross Barnett Reservoir served as backdrop to the crafts fair. Lots of vendors displayed their wares, and as you can see, the emphasis was on Christmas and football.

Mississippi's weather was very cooperative, and I can neither confirm nor deny the purchase of Christmas presents.
The Barnett Reservoir Foundation was founded to assist the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District (PRV) to promote recreation and interest in the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

St. Marks Fall Festival Provides Fun for All ~ Brandon, MS
There is always something fun to do in the Jackson Metro area, especially during the holiday season. This weekend I took the grandkids to St. Marks UMC Fall Festival, and there were games for both the younger set as well as the older kids.

Costumes were optional, although most children took the opportunity to dress as their favorite cartoon character or super hero.

There were simple, easy games for the under 4 set, ranging from "Go Fishing", Bowling, Bean Toss, and Golf, to bull riding and Gladiator jousting for the older … (4 comments)

things to do in brandon ms: Easter Egg Hunt in Brandon MS - 04/09/09 04:36 PM
The City of Brandon held their Annual Easter Egg Hunt Thursday evening at Shiloh Park. Hundreds of children came to the ball fields to race for the colorful eggs and to jump in the giant inflatables. Four ball fields contained over 2000 eggs each to accommodate the excited children. The well-organized hunt enabled the younger children to collect eggs in their own age category while the older children played until their turn on adjoining fields.

Several lucky participants grabbed the "prize" eggs and received special Easter baskets filled with stuffed animals, candy, and other treats.
Although many cities held their hunts … (0 comments)

things to do in brandon ms: 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Parade at Patrick Farms Subdivision - 02/22/09 06:32 AM
Mardi Gras season is underway! The 3rd Annual Mardi Gras Parade was held Saturday at Patrick Farms Subdivision in Pearl, MS.

Grand Marshall for the parade was Scott Simmons, local TV news anchor for WAPT-TV in Jackson, MS.

You may notice the "floats" are unique. The Patrick Farms parade was conceived by friends and residents Melissa Randall and Jacki Barton three years ago as they longed to attend a Mardi Gras parade. The course of their conversation led them to start their own tradition in their neighborhood.
The weather co-operated and 10 "floats", i.e., golf carts, participated in the annual event.
Seen here is Krewe Captain … (5 comments)
