kindness: Life is Precious - 04/22/23 05:14 PM
Our community faced more tragedies as we lost two more precious teenage students to suicide. I cannot even imagine what those parents are going through. Whenever this happens, teachers, co-workers, siblings, parents, friends, and family all face the reality of life without them.
When I taught high school, unfortunately, I lost several students over the years to this horrific type of loss. There simply are no words. When this happens, it does cause us to reflect and remember that none of us knows or understands what any person is dealing with in their own life.
Take a moment to show kindness to that … (6 comments)

kindness: Edification or Eradication? - 01/27/23 12:42 PM
The world we all live in has become more and more divisive, difficult, and dark. I see social media posts that constantly tear other people down. And of course, there are those posts that lift you up and give you a lot of encouragement.
As I pondered on our human behavior, the words edify and eradicate came to mind. When we edify another, it means to "build up". On the other hand, to eradicate means to completely "destroy" something.
Why others spend so much precious time and energy trying to destroy others is beyond me. I just cannot wrap my brain around people … (12 comments)

kindness: Potty Talk Leads to a New Friend - 01/19/23 11:45 AM
I know, catchy title, right? Well, today as I was at Lowe's shopping for toilets for a new build, this other woman and I struck up a conversation about, you guessed it - toilets! Dual flush, or traditional? Soft close? Solid piece or two-piece? Chair height or standard. Can you believe there are so many choices when picking out a toilet?
As we discussed the pros and cons of the various models, I learned she was new to the area. The more we talked, the more we had in common. Before long, we were friends on FaceBook and looking to connect.
The moral … (37 comments)

kindness: How Does Your Attitude Look Today? - 08/09/22 06:29 AM
Yesterday, I was celebrating with the teachers of our school district at our local Walmart. As a board trustee, we awarded every teacher in our district with a $100 spending spree. While this may seem to be a small amount to some, these extra funds can make a big difference in a classroom.
I was a high school Biology teacher for many years and know from experience that teachers spend a lot of their own money in their classrooms. I also know that many teachers spend money on supplies to help out with the students who show up without the needed items. … (28 comments)

kindness: Dare to be Better! - 07/27/22 07:08 AM
I don't know who needs to hear this message today, but I would guess that many people right now are feeling beat down, tired, and frustrated. With the banter of continued "bad news", a volatile political scene, along with disease scares, and more, it is no wonder many are feeling bleak. When so much is coming at us, we can easily fall into depression and worry.
As I woke up today, despite all the challenges, I heard in my spirit, "Dare to be better today!" As I reflected on this it really became clear to me that this message is vital for … (17 comments)

kindness: Focusing on What Really Matters - 07/21/22 08:02 AM
Most of you have probably noticed that the world, our nation, states, and individual communities are split regarding many topics. We all know there will never be 100 percent consensus on any given topic. However, at some point, we must focus on what really matters.
Many of you are experiencing record-high temperatures and wildfires. My community is going through this as I write this post. We have endured weeks of triple-digit temperatures. With these dry and parched conditions, it was only a matter of time before the wildfires erupted.
We now have our first responders, firefighters, and untold numbers of volunteers doing whatever … (19 comments)

kindness: Dealing With Toxic People - 02/04/22 08:02 AM
I bet this topic resonates with many of you out there. Sadly, it appears that more and more people just bite other people's heads off, are rude, and are downright toxic. Maybe you are currently dealing with a toxic person in your life.
A toxic person is defined as someone who is extremely harsh, malicious, or harmful. Interestingly, the origin of the word, “toxic” comes from Late Latin toxicus, toxicum poison, from Greek toxikon arrow poison. Isn’t it interesting that in the Greek form toxikon, it refers to an arrow poison?
A toxic person definitely aims their verbal poison directly at their target in order to bring them … (23 comments)

kindness: LIV2DAY - Power in Words - 09/10/21 08:14 AM

As children, most of us heard the saying, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." On the contrary, words can cause hurt; in fact, God's word tells us that with the tongue we "speak life or death." (Proverbs 18:21) But did you know that speaking negative, harmful, hateful words can even have a destructive effect on the body? Not just your body, but of those around you?

kindness: Social Media Showdown - 08/19/21 10:50 AM
LONG BLOG POST WARNING:   As I ruminate on all that is going on in the world such as the horrors in Afghanistan, the many issues we face domestically, and the constant drone of bad news, these issues drown out the mundane issues that are inconsequential in comparison. More importantly, let me raise the real-life, everyday issues that are all around us. For instance, I know of two young families who are in praying for their premie babies and clinging to each and every moment they have with these precious children. Also, two other dear friends are grieving the loss of their … (14 comments)
