Gardening in Lexington Kentucky made simple by raking leaves into a tarp and pulling them to the compost pile. I often see neighbors spending hours raking and bagging leaves. They bag the leaves and leave them on the street to be picked up. I compost my leaves which, in the long run, takes less effort than stuffing them in bags. How can that be? Well my collection method is the biggest time saver. I use a 12 by 9 painting tarp to transport the leaves from my front yard to (3 comments)

Adding Lime to the Garden and Lawn is Key for Successful Gardening Every summer I have people ask me how I am able to grow such a great garden. The soil is the key and adding a garden lime to the soil is essential. We get a lot of rain during the year here in Lexington. In fact our average rainfall far exceeds the rainfall in Seattle, Washington. Rain tends to cause acid build up in the soil. The majority of plants like a Ph level between six and seven. In order to help keep soil in the six to seven (6 comments)
lexingtons green thumb realtor: Wilmore Kentucky Celebrates Independence with its Annual Parade
- 07/04/12 07:09 AM
My wife Kathy and I packed up the folding chairs, filled the stainless steel thermos with "adventure juice" and headed to Wilmore for the annual 4th of July parade. Well dressed brigade pushes their lawnmowers through the streets of Wilmore. It takes us about 25 minutes to drive down highway 68 to this small college village that never disappoints. Asbury College and Seminary are the primary reason for the existence of Wilmore. There are not any children cuter on earth than these watching the Wilmore parade. The innocence of this parade with local politicians throwing candy, the lawn mower brigade dressed in (0 comments)

Warm Weather Arrives Early The recent summer like weather gave me the opportunity to spade some ground and start planting some seeds for the spring garden. Little Ones Help Little helpers watch Grandpa cover the arugula. Sam and Caroline helped me plant the beans last year. This year I let them plant the onion sets, sow some radish seeds and some arugula. The rows are not straight but the seeds are up and they are proud of their accomplishments. The Wonder of It All Caroline really enjoys eating everything we grow and Sam just enjoys helping Grandpa. For me just watching (2 comments)

Seeds sprouting always remind me there is a God of Miracles. Grow your own plants with 100 percent success. I started several different kinds of seeds on Friday and Saturday here in my propagation center in Lexington Kentucky, only two and three days ago. Seeds are Coming up in less than Three Days This afternoon when I checked the lettuce seeds were pushing green life through the potting mix, the statice seeds were also peeking their little heads out and several other seeds were causing the ground to bulge. It will never cease to amaze me how quickly seeds will sprout (0 comments)
lexingtons green thumb realtor: Home Sales Up for January 2012, What happened to prices?
- 02/11/12 03:18 PM
As noted in an earlier post January 2012 home sales in Central Kentucky increased almost a hundred percent over January 2011. With that kind of jump in sales it seems that maybe prices would begin to rise also. Not so! Prices for January 2012 were almost 7 percent lower than the average home that sold in Central Kentucky in 2011. The inventory is down in Central Kentucky which is expected during the winter months. Home sales increased almost a hundred percent. Yet, prices continued to fall significantly. It will be most interesting to see what the next few months bring to Central Kentucky home sales. It certainly (0 comments)

I ran up to Chinoe Center this morning. It was 37 degrees. Just a little nippy so that my ears were a bit touched before my body warmed up. As I run I am usually thinking of how I get to the next goal. It is mostly an uphill run. My lungs seldom hurt but my legs begin to feel a little like marsh mellows at about a half a mile. If I keep my thoughts on how to get to the next spot without stopping I can push on and continue to push on a few hundred feet at a time. I (0 comments)

Big Change In Fayette County Housing Market We constantly read that this is a buyer's market here in Fayette County and it has been for several years now. Historically a buyer's market is defined by the fact that there are six months or more inventory of homes to be sold. That is commonly called "the absorption rate." In simple terms the absorption rate is how many months it will take to sell the homes that are currently on the market in a certain price range. Well, we finally have an absorption rate that is less than six months. There are (0 comments)

lexingtons green thumb realtor: Ordered Seed for Lexington's Green Thumb Realtor Give Away in April
- 01/14/12 01:07 PM
Today I finished putting together my seed order for this coming spring. I am hiring a local farmer, Tim Vetter to grow my plants this year. I have run out of room in my propagation center. So when it comes time for the Big Spring Plant Give Away hopefully I will have enough plants for all my clients and friends and family.
I ordered everything from either Fedco Seeds or Johnny's. Fedcos prices are better, in my opinion the best of all the seed companies. However Fedco does not have as many flowers and specific varieties.
