new mexico: Passive Solar Design Homes: A Green Heating Solution for New Mexico (and Elsewhere) - 04/06/10 04:09 AM

Passive Solar Designed Homes in Albuquerque
People here in Albuquerque and other Southwestern communities have been building with passive solar designs for hundreds of years.  Ancient adobe homes attest to this long-held building tradition in New Mexico.  When most people think of New Mexican architecture or building, adobe structures often come to mind.  With Albuquerque's beautiful sun-filled skies, designing for passive solar is a cost-effective and relatively simple green heating and cooling solution.

new mexico: North Valley Albuquerque Homes and Real Estate - 03/30/10 07:02 AM
North Valley Albuquerque homes and real estate are often surrounded by an environment of peacefulness.  Winding streets, long, narrow parcels, acequias, and fertile landscapes fill the North Valley landscape.  Many homes sit on lush acreage, surrounded by colorful gardens, small orchards, and ancient cottonwood trees.  Because many homes are set on one acre or more sized lots, this is one of the few areas in Albuquerque where the city permits horses.  It is also common to see chickens, llamas, peacocks, and goats roaming in people's backyards.Existing housing is very diverse in price, size, quality, and type.  Most residential areas are marked with custom … (0 comments)

new mexico: Drought Tolerant Landscaping in New Mexico - 11/22/08 12:26 AM
Now that we are in fall season, with some days feeling like winter, I am amazed at how much color still exists on in my mostly drought tolerant landscaped yard.  This was the first year that I spent a lot of time planting, seeding, and gardening my yard and the aesthetic payoff has lasted months beyond expectation.  So I thought I'd post a bit about the "wonders" of gardening a Southwest-inspired-by nature-landscape.
Living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, anyone will tell you how dry it can get.  And although it is imperative that we drink enough water everyday to keep our … (1 comments)

new mexico: Steps to Green Up Your Home - 11/19/08 07:29 AM
Next time you are in the market for furnishing your home, consider healthy, non-toxic options. If you want to clean up the air inside your home, you have to make greener, more healthy consumer choices when dressing up your house. Most people don't realize that the majority of furniture sold today consist of plywood and finishes which contain formaldehyde.  Most sofas we rest on, carpets we walk on, and beds we sleep on off-gass many toxic chemicals.  (Anything foam usually equals off-gassing). Anything that has been treated with fire-retardant chemicals or treated with stain-resistant chemicals is guaranteed to leach toxic chemicals into the air and even penetrate through our skin.

new mexico: Green Appraiser in New Mexico - 11/11/08 12:12 AM
Does anyone out there (in New Mexico) know of an appraiser that specializes (or at least has a wide knowledge base) in green home appraisals?  Green built homes -should- carry a higher value per foot than do "non-eco" homes but there are so few green homes out there to compare.
In fact, The National Association of Realtors reports that Congress is actually considering legislation, HR 6078, which would require energy efficient, energy-conserving, and renewable energy sources be considered as improvements in an appraisal.
The house I am building right now is located in Albuquerque's North Valley, which anyone who knows, is itself … (5 comments)

new mexico: Building Green Home - 11/09/08 12:03 PM
In addition to being a real estate broker with Earth Origins Realty, I am also a green builder with Earth Origins Construction.  I am currently building a 2600 square foot home here in Albuquerque's North Valley.  I can't believe how much more time and energy it takes to build an eco friendly home.  There are so many new and exciting products and technologies out there that it can blow one's mind away.
I have not listed the property yet....but it will soon be on the market.
Some of the green features that this home includes are: passive solar orientation, solar water … (1 comments)
