weather: Nasty Weather Cometh... - 01/21/16 09:45 PM
The next 36 hours will be a test for most people's patience who live on the east coast. There is a large storm spinning up the coast that will bring lots of snow and ice. My wife works for Georgia Power and is spending at least the next day or two hunkered down in the storm center helping get crews to places where the electricity is out. Armageddon? Nah, I don't think so.
In my opinion, where people go wrong in a storm like this is they get caught trying to get from point A to point B. In a storm several years … (2 comments)

weather: Winter showed up this morning! - 01/10/16 10:04 PM
One of the many things I like about the South is that we have 4 seasons, with winter generally one of the shorter ones! This morning I woke up to 19 degree weather and decided Winter has arrived.
Normally, we see below freezing weather every Winter. We even occasionally get an inch or two of snow that shuts down all services since we really have very little snow and ice removal equipment. Even though it is "Nippy" outside, we have blue skies and sunshine that will warm us up to around the mid 40's today.
So, as long as today is our Winter and tomorrow … (3 comments)

weather: The siren song - 04/20/15 05:36 AM
Many parts of the country are subject to violent storms in the Spring. Whether it is hail storms, thunder storms, or even tornadoes, people living in these areas are trained by the media to watch the weather stations or listen to radios to keep informed of where these dangerous storms are. Here in the Atlanta, we have early warning sirens that blare when the weather turns dangerous. Early warning means minutes, or less.
These sirens are common place throughout the southern tier of the united states. I used to hear them every Summer in Des Moines Iowa when we visited my grand … (3 comments)

weather: Does bad weather affect home sales? - 02/25/15 09:39 PM
Here in the south, in January and February, we can have snow and ice. Luckily, it usually is gone just as quickly as it comes. But during the day(s) that the roads are bad, people tend to hunker down at home and not venture out. Open houses get canceled as well as broker caravans. If you look at the numbers of homes sold during bad weather, the numbers do drop.
That's here in the south. In colder climates where people are used to extended periods of cold, snow, and ice, I suspect there is a difference. People in the colder areas see … (21 comments)

weather: Open letter to Spring - 04/16/14 12:03 AM
Dear Spring,
You might think it is funny, but I don't and most of the people I know are ticked at you as well. You came in a few weeks ago, gave us some warm weather, and made all the flowers and trees bloom. Now, I don't want to sound whiny, but the pollen the trees are producing is really a pain. Can you do something about that for next Spring?
I do appreciate the rain coming in to hold the pollen down a bit and the flowers appreciated it too. But, the wind and cold you brought yesterday were just … (7 comments)

weather: Wire we scared? - 02/11/14 02:12 AM
I had a client once that always said,"If you're scared, say you're scared!" Ok, we are scared in Atlanta. Everything is closed today because of inclement weather. This means the roads are wet. But, it has been snowing and the worst is yet to come. Some parts of the area are expecting upwards of an inch of ice accumulation.
Ice is really heavy. If you had a block of ice 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch, it would weigh 6 pounds. So why should we care? Well, this ice we are expecting tonight and tomorrow will freeze on trees and … (6 comments)

weather: Snowmegeddon! - 01/28/14 10:04 PM
OMG! The Atlanta area received 2-3 inches of snow yesterday. The city is crippled. I have lived in the New York area, received an 18 inch snowfall, and gone to work the next day never skipping a beat. What is the difference you ask? Many will tell you it is the inexperienced drivers in the south. I think there is some validity to that, but there is more to the story.
Yesterday as the snow began to fall, the area businesses let their employees go...all at the same time. Schools let out as well. There were probably a hundred thousand cars … (4 comments)

weather: Snow in the South - 01/28/14 06:13 AM
Here in the sunny south we do occasionally get snow in the winter. It usually is less than an inch and is gone in a day or two. Today we had snow. It snowed about 3 inches over 6 hours today and looks like it is just about done. So am I. The problem with snow in the south is that we have very little equipment to shovel it out of the way. We also get ice.
It was about 60 degrees yesterday and is now about 19. The snow we received melted at first then turned right into ice. My trek from the … (5 comments)

weather: Weather fun! - 01/10/14 10:00 PM
We are having a great time this month with the weather. Tuesday of this week the temperature dropped to 6 degrees, with a windchill of -10. This was a record for the area. Pipes were blowing up everywhere! In homes as well as under streets. Fountains were frozen and apparently the end of the world was near if you listened to the TV.
Well, I am pleased to report that today we have heavy rain, thunder and lightening, and tornado sirens blaring. Where else can you get to experience all this different weather in the same January?
There seems to … (6 comments)

weather: New year...Same weather. - 01/01/14 10:23 PM
Good grief! 2013 was the 5th rainiest for the Atlanta metro area in recorded history. We had over 66 inches of rain! What I can't believe is that it was only the 5th wettest. We ended the wet year with rain and today...yep...Pouring rain outside.
It is hard to remember that just 3-4 years ago we were in the grips of a several year long drought. The lakes were all drying up, the marinas were mostly out of business, we had water restrictions, couldn't water your lawn, and so much more. We still need those restrictions though. But on the water … (6 comments)

weather: I think I just saw Noah! - 12/08/13 09:28 PM
I think I did. Some guy in a big boat just sailed by my window. There were all sorts of animals here and there. He was waving at me as he sailed around the corner. Should I be worried?
Days and days of rain tend to make one see things. I believe the ark was really a golf cart going by with a maintenance guy intent on fixing a flooded sand trap or something. Either way, I think I am sick of the rain (The Wet Kind that falls from the sky).
Never-the-less, houses in the area are still being … (9 comments)

weather: Oh the weather here is frightful... - 12/07/13 11:18 PM
Well, what a nasty day here in the sunny south. The wind is howling around the house. The rain is coming down. The temperature is in the mid 40's, not cold, just nasty. This year has been the rainiest year I can remember. The spring here was wet and it never let up. Makes it hard to remember the drought we had just 2-3 years ago.
The good news is that I can think about all the chores I have relagated to that future rainy day, and probably not do them today either. I have no real reason to be out … (3 comments)

weather: Weather - 10/27/13 11:46 PM
You would think with all the weather satellites, big computers, and smart people around, we would be able to figure out the weather for the next day or so. I watched the weather last night and we were to be in the 70's all week with a mixture of clouds and sun. They gave a 20% chance of rain for Halloween but not till late in the evening. Sounds great right?
It rained most of the night. It's cold outside today and raining. Perhaps I watched the wrong channel. Maybe I tuned in to Phoenix weather by mistake. Or maybe, the … (6 comments)

weather: It was a blustery day... - 07/07/13 11:26 PM
As you have probably seen on the news, the East coast has been suffering through an abnormally wet Spring and early Summer. It has rained here for days on end and its not finished yet. As I look out my windows this morning, I see another cloudy day, with a 40% chance of rain and thunderstorms again. I think I am just about done with the wet weather!
Friday we had an afternoon storm come up. I happened to look outside and the wind was ripping through the trees. As usual, instead of doing the smart thing and retiring to the … (4 comments)

weather: Rain. The good, bad, and ugly. - 06/17/13 10:29 PM
The weather in Atlanta is usually really nice. We hardly ever get too cold in the Winter. If the temp drops way down, it usually stays that way for just a day. The summers can get warm and muggy, but many days the weather is just perfect. It does rain in Atlanta. And sometimes it doesn't.
We had a 2-3 year drought a while back where the area lakes which supply our drinking water shriveled up to mere creeks. It was really weird to look out at the lakes and see nothing but dry lake bed. During this time at least … (4 comments)

weather: Don't like the weather? Just give it a second. - 03/05/13 09:20 PM
Weather is a fast paced thing here. Yesterday the temperature reached the mid 60's. Yesterday afternoon we had a thunder storm and last night it dropped into the high 20's. We now have a dusting of snow on the ground. This weekend it is supposed to be back in the mid 60's. Somebody can't make up their mind whether they want Winter or Spring! I know I have my mind made up...Come on Spring!
Once winter loosens its grip we enter into a time just before Spring called, Yellow. Yes, Yellow. This is the 3-4 weeks that all the pine trees compete … (6 comments)

weather: Mid January and its close to 70 degrees! - 01/09/13 10:18 PM
I like nice weather. I think that when I win the lottery, I will move somewhere in the Caribbean and hang out in a tiki bar. Well, until then, the Atlanta area is being pretty nice to me! It was chilly here last week, but this weekend the temperatures are supposed to be in the low 70's! Global warming? Nah.
The average high this time of year is around 50. It was warmer than that this morning when I left the house. Some will say that we need the cold weather in the Winter to kill the VW sized mosquitoes we … (6 comments)

weather: Biggest this, worst that, wow! - 10/28/12 10:13 PM
Like most of you I have been watching the weather channel all weekend, keeping myself updated on Hurricane Sandy. I am hundreds of miles from the storm, but as I went to bed last night, I could hear the trees outside brushing against the house in the stiff breeze. It always astounds me when I hear things like, the storm is the biggest we have ever seen, or, this type storm has not occurred before in recorded history.
Now, I know that the weather service records only go back to the late 1800's, but wow. It seems that we keep having … (7 comments)
