surfing: New Way to Enjoy the Waves Emerging in Santa Cruz, Ca! - 07/12/11 05:12 AM
Everyone knows that Santa Cruz is a surfer's paradise, but lately, people have been riding waves a different way; with standup paddle boards. The sport appeals to seasoned surfers and newcomers alike, and sales of boards and rentals show that the trend is on the rise, and local vendors are taking notice.
Santa Cruz and the surrounding areas are full of surf shops dedicated to tradional surfing, but until recently, standup paddling gear was largely absent from their inventory. Santa Cruz local Scott Ruble set out to change that, and about a year ago co-opened the Covewater Paddle Surf shop. Since opening, … (0 comments)

surfing: Santa Cruz's Famous Surf Museum Celebrates it's 25th Anniversary this Friday - 05/25/11 09:15 AM
The world (well, maybe not world, but definitely Californian) Famous surf museum atop Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, CA will be celebrating 25 years of history this Friday, the 27th. The museum was started by various surf clubs in Santa Cruz in the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse (a young surfer who died had this lightouse constructed in memory) to preserve the surf culture and history of our beautiful city. It seems as though this  has worked out well, for Santa Cruz was also named an International Surf Preserve just earlier this year.
Santa Cruz has a long history of being one of the … (0 comments)

surfing: New Years Resolution of Santa Cruz, CA - 01/19/11 10:23 AM
Santa Cruz, CA isn't called "Surf City" for nothing. Besides all of the surf competitions held here, such as the Duct Tape invitational or the Jay at Maverick's, people come from near and far to just spend one day at these amazing beaches on their board. Even my assistant confesses to needing to learn how to surf well just because she lives in Santa Cruz. Rather than thinking someday or maybe tomorrow, why not now?
Although the cold winter waters of Santa Cruz waters and high swells are daunting, this city is host to many more diverse surf schools then somewhere like say, Hawaii … (0 comments)

surfing: Surf Legends Coming to Steamer Lane, Another Reason Why We Love Santa Cruz, CA - 01/12/11 11:28 AM
Besides the O'neill Coldwater Classic and the currently on going The Jay at Maverick's-which I covered in my other blog-Santa Cruz, CA knows no end to excellent surf and competitions to show it off.
This weekend, the 14th and 15th of January, Santa Cruz, CA will play host to the Vans Duct Tape Invitational. This contest entails a longboard competition in which the interference call penalty is removed, and surfers can catch the same wave together. There are many other unusual rules for this competition, one in which an award is given for the best board sacrifice. Says Joel Tudor, contest director of the invitational, "The Duct … (0 comments)

surfing: Santa Cruz, CA-Home to World Renown Surfing - 12/17/10 11:54 AM
We all know that Santa Cruz, CA has some of the best mountain biking, hiking, whale watching, fishing, vineyards and wineries, and organic farming around. And somehow with all this, there is even more. Santa Cruz also is home to some of the most famous surfing around the world, with even the renown Oneill's brand having started up in this beautiful area. Jack Oneill started his first surf shop in 1952 in Santa Cruz, CA with just a few surfboards made of balsa wood, and then began gluing together vests of neoprene. The sale of the vests quickly grew and attracted more surfers, and … (0 comments)
