beforeandafter: Before and After: Inglewood Cottage Kitchen - 03/15/10 11:21 AM
The kitchen at my Inglewood Cottage project needed some creativity to get to the shape it's in today- fabulous!! (Professional photos by Zach Goodyear.)Here are some of the challenges that were overcome:1. Open the wall up between the kitchen and dining area and make it an arch to make the other doorways in the home (this post).2. Make a spot to install a dishwasher next to the sink (this post).3. Add counterspace on the wall next to the range where there previously was none.4. Build a cabinet next to the dishwasher and over the range to hold the new hood (this … (1 comments)

beforeandafter: Tile for the Inglewood Kitchen - 03/13/10 01:56 AM
It's been a while since I wrote about the Inglewood Cottage project. I finished my part to let the homeowners get everything painted before they put it on the market. I wanted to wait until after they were finished to get some final pictures.Somehow, this home from the 1940's has retained much of it's character by still having the original hardwood floors and even the unpainted trim and doors. (A rare thing in this part of Inglewood). To continue the character into the remodeled kitchen, the homeowners wanted me to install a white subway tile backsplash and a ceramic tile floor.

beforeandafter: Open Up the Kitchen Wall - 12/14/09 01:27 PM
After seeing the results of one of my recent projects where I opened up the wall in one of their neighbor's kitchens (this project), these homeowners decided to have me do the same to their home. It's always a rewarding project when you get to be part of such a dramatic transformation in such a short amount of time.

This a newer neighborhood so the homes, although somewhat different, are built with nearly the same layout, making this job very similar to the other one that I did. This was NOT a load-bearing wall, which helps speed … (7 comments)

beforeandafter: Eastwood Kitchen Before and After - 08/14/09 12:18 PM
I finished up my kitchen project in East Nashville this week. It was fun to see it transform from the linoleum flooring, laminate counters and outdated tile to having a glass tile backsplash, butcher block countertops and travertine stone flooring. To read all the posts from this project, click here.

The finishing touches included the wine rack (see this post), shoe moulding and repairing some trim. I also caulked around the backsplash and flooring thresholds. (Appliances will be added soon!)
The kitchen adjoined a laundry room so it got a makeover with traveetine as well.
This wonderful Craftsman home … (0 comments)

beforeandafter: Rebuilding that Sagging Porch - 07/25/09 01:26 AM
When I was first introduced to this lovely porch it was sagging considerably. Further inspection showed that it was built without an all-important ridge beam and now the decorative brackets were supporting the weight, for now...
The cure for this was to completely remove the porch and rebuild a new one, trying to match the old one as much as possible. Here are the steps I took:Dismantle the old porch (this post)Reframe a new porch with a ridge beam (this post)
Install roofing to match up to the house (this post)
Trim the porch with beadboard, drip cap & wood siding … (0 comments)

beforeandafter: Bathroom Tile Floor Makeover - 06/19/09 02:56 PM
It's always fun to do projects that really transform a room. In this bathroom project, we put new tile on the floor and replaced the vinyl base with stained baseboard.
The tiles are stock from Lowe's. We mixed two shades into a checkerboard pattern. The two shades are called "Mocha" and "Hazelnut". I guess the bathroom is now a bistro, eh? We put the tile down on the first day (see this post).

I grouted the floor this morning with a sanded grout called "Sand Beige". It coordinated with the tiles and looked great. I used a matching caulk to … (0 comments)

beforeandafter: Make the Window A/C Disappear - 06/10/09 01:04 PM
In getting ready to sell their home, some clients wanted me to remove an old air conditioner and patch the hole. It was quite unsightly and hadn't worked for years. It was a straightforward project, but I can understand how things like this get put off. (I have stuff like that around my house too!)
Anyway, after getting the unit out and not breaking my back, I removed the old trim, etc. from the A/C hole. Once I got down to just the framing, I added a couple nailers and started putting things back together. The siding was 1x8 beveled spruce … (0 comments)

beforeandafter: Landscape Renovation to Sell Your House - 06/09/09 04:15 PM
I enjoy variety in life. Today it was evident as I left my nail guns behind and grabbed some mulch to renovate the landscaping for a client who is about to list his home for sale. This older Inglewood home has some charming qualities to it and had at one time had some decent landscaping. My job was to clean up the beds and make the home look great. This was a low-budget makeover with the only materials expense being a load of mulch. Thankfully, there were already some nice plants there to be uncovered.

On the one side of the … (0 comments)
