The midweek report is a day late this week because I needed to digest the results of all of the reports. It is a very confusing week. Step back for a moment. While the economy was showing serious softness the stock market was soaring because company’s profits were growing. Now this week the economy is showing some strength and the stock market is falling as the interest rates are rising. Market Focus: With a heavy dose of manufacturing reports and a sprinkle of spending the brew for the end of September and beginning of October culminates in the never dull employment report. Like the age old question: If a tree fall in the forest and no one hears it did it make a sound? Will anyone care as all eyes are on the government shutdown and what effect that might have on main street.

Market Focus: Will September follow history or make history? August was the biggest drop in stocks in over a year. Historically September is a down month. Wall Street and congress are back to work (lucky us). We face a lot of manufacturing, sales and jobs reports all a week before the Federal Reserve meets to have another open dialogue about taking their foot off the stimulus pedal. If the job creation is greater than it’s been (180,000 new non-farm payroll jobs) the speculation that the Fed will stop buying bonds should cause the stock market to drop.
