fire your landlord: Renters, I don't know if I can help you
- 12/23/13 11:49 PM
A while ago, I wrote about how you may miss your opportunity to buy a home at a great price. Well, if you didn't buy then, you may have missed that opportunity. Although still reasonable compared to historical prices, home prices have crept up in 2013. The number of homes available at a given price is somewhat restrictive, and the median sales price in this area has increased more than ten percent in the last year. So, you can expect to spend around ten percent more this year than last for a similar home. Well, sort of... The purchase price of

fire your landlord: Dog food prices are rising. Landlords in Burnsville are taking action
- 07/08/11 09:55 AM
Like human food and lots of other things, dog food prices are going through the roof. If our country would stop trying to make fuel out of everything except natural gas, maybe prices would stabilize or drop, but that's another story. Today I want to commend landlords everywhere for doing what is necessary to feed their dogs the high quality and healthy food they deserve, even in the face of ridiculously high prices. Yes, all you had to do to afford the higher dog food prices was raise the rents of your tenants, and that you did with gusto. Congratulations on

fire your landlord: Free strategy planning and home buying orientation for Burnsville renters
- 04/03/11 06:37 AM
Like a number of Dakota County communities, Burnsville's housing market is right for first time home buyers. According to the Regional Multiple Listing Service of Minnesota, there are 377 homes for sale in Burnsville with nearly half of them priced under $150,000. Given its reputation as a great place to live, work, and play, Burnsville housing is a very attractive option. If you're a renter, and if you're hoping to make a lifestyle upgrade, take advantage of this offer. Spend an hour or so learning about the real estate market, and financing options, including help with down payment and closing costs.

fire your landlord: Renters, are you running out of time?
- 03/30/11 04:54 AM
If your lease ends on May 1, there's a good chance that you need to notify your landlord by tomorrow if you want to renew. The options given to you may include a rent increase, and probably will be another year indentured to the mandates of the owner. If you're not sure whether you can gain your freedom, insist on a month to month lease. That will give you the flexibility to move on with a relatively short notice rather than waiting another year to fire your landlord. What's another year? If you're 25 years old, it's 4% of your life

fire your landlord: Update: Where is your landlord?
- 01/26/11 03:29 AM
About a year ago I posted a question and some possible answers. I asked about where your landlord is and what he is probably doing. Last year there were more uncertainties about the housing market than this year, and after a year, landlords are still doing quite well. Last year, I suggested that there's a good chance that your landlord was home counting the money you paid him, and that he was probably thinking about raising your rent. Well, if he didn't do it last year, you got lucky. Your luck will probably run out eventually, probably sooner than later. Rent

fire your landlord: Burnsville renters, it's time for your landlord's annual review
- 11/22/10 09:12 AM
According to city data, there are approximately eight thousand renter occupied homes in Burnsville. If you are one of those eight thousand folks currently helping someone else make a mortgage payment, why not consider giving him an annual review? Here are a few questions about your landlord that you may want to ask. Actually, you probably know the answer to them, but keep score. Can you count on not having the rent raised in the next few years? Can you decorate any way you want? Can you deduct the property taxes and the interest on the mortgage payment you are making

fire your landlord: As long as you live under my roof...
- 02/18/10 08:47 AM
So far, you have always lived in someone else's house. First, you lived with Mom and Dad. "As long as you are living under my roof, you will follow my rules!" Remember that? Then you became independent, went to school, then joined the full time workforce. You moved from Mom and Dad's place to a dorm to an apartment. How was your independence and adulthood welcomed? "As long as you live under my roof, you will follow my rules!" Kind of nostalgic, isn't it? That's no way for an adult to live. Even the government knows that it's time for you

fire your landlord: Where is your landlord?
- 02/14/10 04:40 AM
We don't know for certain, but there's a good chance that your landlord is home counting the money you paid him. Right now, he may even be planning how to get even more from you next year, and the year after. Landlords aren't necessary bad people. They just want to make a big profit like everyone who's in business. Your rent payment helps the landlord in several ways. You are helping him pay off the mortgage on the property he owns. That increases his equity in the building and helps him continue to build wealth. Thank you. Your rent helps him

fire your landlord: Rent or buy? A declaration of independence
- 02/07/10 06:07 AM
If you are like hundreds of thousands of renters, your lease ends sometime between the end of April and the end of June. The landlord (God love him) wants two months notice of intent to renew or not. It’s time to make the annual decision, rent another year or move on with your life and buy something. Owning your home truly has economic advantages. However, it is not merely an economic investment. Sure, you will build equity by owing a little less every time you make a monthly payment. You may pay less income tax by itemizing the real estate tax
