Even in times when home values are increasing, people have life-changing events that cause them to have to sell their homes. Today, many homeowners have owned their homes for a while and have borrowed against the home's value to pay other bills or to make large purchases. Many others bought their homes near the top of the market, and they are simply not worth what they owe. The problem arises when someone has to sell their home today. There's nothing wrong with renting if you love your landlord and enjoy being treated like a child. Well, nothing but the lack of privacy and that obnoxious other tenant who can't seem to keep the noise down and loves the odor of burning grease. The rent's probably going up next year, but you're saving money on dog food since you can't have a dog. If you're renting and running out of patience, now is the time to start preparing for a spring move. There has been a lot of noise in the media about the wisdom in either buying or renting a home. Most of the discussion has been limited to the economics associated with one over the other. My opinion is that there are some things that you can't stick into a spreadsheet, and they are probably the most important components of a rent/buy decision. If mobility is a high priority, you have no choice. You must rent or lose lots of dollars. If you chase dollars around the world and seldom live in the same place for more than a year or (1 comments)

If you are like hundreds of thousands of renters, your lease ends sometime between the end of April and the end of June. The landlord (God love him) wants two months notice of intent to renew or not. It’s time to make the annual decision, rent another year or move on with your life and buy something. Owning your home truly has economic advantages. However, it is not merely an economic investment.
