According to a story in the New York Times that is what is happening to many homeowners who let their insurance lapse. Be it an oversight, because they simply can't pay it or because their lenders pays it and the homeowner has stopped making payments. Yes, if you don't pay your mortgage and your lender had been paying your insurance they will stop paying the standard policy you have and put in place one of these high priced policies.
