One of our favorite local getaway spots is Howard Prairie Lake, only 20 minutes outside of Ashland Oregon. Opening day for the resort is April 15th, and we can hardly wait until it warms up a bit more and we can put our boat on the lake for the season. We'll still be up there checking things out again in the meantime, and maybe even the Trout Fishing Season Opener on April 24th.

One of the many amazing community programs the Rotary Club of Ashland Oregon has is the sponsorship of inbound and outbound youth exchange students. The community support that has gone in to this amazing life experience the participating foreign exchange students have is truly incredible, from the families that house them to the schools that teach them. For each incoming exchange student, three Host families step up to the plate and give the student a home during their stay here, sharing themselves, their homes, family and friends with these students.

Did you know Route 66 winds its way right through Southern Oregon? It was such a wonderful Autumn Day, with temperatures in the high 70's. We were chomping at the bit to get out of the house and enjoy this day. What better destination to have than no destination at all? Having communicated earlier in the week with Diarmuid McGuire, owner of the Green Springs Inn located about 10 miles South of Ashland Oregon (the McGuires are back!), we thought we would start our meanderings in that direction, and head down Route 66 to see what Fall Foliage we might experience … (5 comments)

Living in this beautiful area of Southern Oregon, surrounded by forests, rivers, lava flows, caves and lakes, our biggest challenge is to figure out which wonderful terrain we want to go see when there is so much gorgeous scenery to see.
One of our most favorite destinations is Howard Prairie Lake. This mountain lake experiences some wonderful breezes, making it not only the lake of choice for boaters looking to fish, ski or cruise (like we do), but it is ideal for the sailboats, too.

Our temperatures here in Southern Oregon will have their first brush with 100 degrees today, and it reminded me that we have so many fun events to look forward to during the summertime! From the arts to water play, are kids will only bored if we want them to be, as there are activities available for all interests. For our sporty children, there are weeklong camps available for almost every sports enthusiast, for soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, and volleyball. Too formal for you? Today was Opening Day for Trout Fishing on three Southern Oregon Lakes, Diamond Lake, Hyatt Lake and Howard Prairie Lake. And a BEAUTIFUL day it was! Diamond Lake and Hyatt Lakes were both still covered in ice, so anglers were going to be drilling holes in the ice to enjoy opening day on those lakes. Although they were just battling snow last week, anglers found gorgeous Spring conditions at Howard Prairie Lake today.

Run by the YMCA for many years, now being operated by Table Rock Fellowship (TRF), Camp Apserkaha is a sixty-six acre camp located on the southern shore of Howard Prairie Lake. Amenities at Camp Apserkaha include a dining shelter, commercial kitchen, twelve cabins, and almost a half-mile of lake frontage. Just steps away from the Pacific Crest Trail, this camp lies in a beautiful setting in the Southern Oregon woods with incredible views of Mt. McLoughlin.

It was a beautiful day to go sledding, and we weren't the only Southern Oregon residents to think so! We headed off to our favorite sledding hill at Table Mountain Winter Play Area just across from Hyatt Lake. This is one of our favorite family time day trips for many reasons. Only 20 miles from Ashland, Oregon, off Hwy 66 to Dead Indian Memorial Road to the turnoff to Howard Prairie/Hyatt Lake, its location cannot be beat.
