texas: April 2011 Home Sales Trends - Austin, Texas - 05/29/11 05:10 AM
April 2011 home sales trends are now out for Austin, Texas.  There were 1,851 homes sold in April 2011 as compared with 2,230 sold during April 2010.  Year to date, there have been 5,824 homes sold in Austin versus 6,451 sold during the same time period in 2010.
The average home sold for $264,900 and there is currently a 6.9 month supply of available inventory.  There is good news on the job front for Austin with business relocations continuing to be announced.  This reinforces the narrative of how attractive Austin remains as a business relocation destination.

texas: 2 Texas Cities Lead the Nation in Job Creation - 03/18/11 10:14 AM
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released its January 2011 employment numbers.  The Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and the Houston/Sugarland/Baytown area created the most jobs of any other metropolitan areas in the US from Jan 2010 - Jan 2011!
The Dallas area created 63,600 jobs and the Houston area created 56,600.  In total - during that same time period - Texas again led the nation in job creation with 241,500 jobs.

More good economic news for Texas was released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showing that Texas led the nation in job creation for January 2011!
Texas added 44,100 jobs in January and their unemployment rate held steady at 8.3%
Here are the top 5 states for job creation in January 2011:

- Michigan - 39,700
- Ohio - 31,900
- Illinois - 24,500
- California - 22,600

texas: NAR Releases Q4 2010 Median Home Price Information for Texas Cities - 02/11/11 12:23 PM
The National Association of Realtors has released its Q4 2010 median home price analysis and the major Texas cities generally fared quite well.  Of the 4 largest metropolitan areas, only Dallas registered a price decline when comparing median price changes from Q4 2010 vs Q4 2009.
Overall, the NAR measured median home prices in the 152 largest metropolitan areas in the US and 78 showed price appreciation when compared with Q4 2009, 3 were flat and 71 showed home price declines.

texas: Dallas and Houston Fare Well in 2011 Home Price Study - 01/26/11 09:03 AM
Clear Capital and Forbes took a look at the top 50 metropolitan areas and offered some predictions on home price growth/decline in 2011.  Dallas and Houston both appeared in the top 10! 
While their numbers look a bit gloomy overall with 35 of the top 50 metro areas expected to see average home price decline, it does offer some nice rays of hope in the other 15 markets.

texas: Texas Expected to Add 1.5 Million Jobs in Next 5 Years! - 01/12/11 09:18 AM
Some more encouraging economic news for the state of Texas....this time from IHS Global Insight.  IHS has projected out job growth rates for all states in the US through 2016.  Texas is one of only 6 states with an expected growth rate in excess of 2%.  Texas' projected job growth rate of 2.3% ranks #4 behind only Utah, Idaho & Nevada.  But the sheer size of the state's job base transalates that 2.3% growth rate into 1.5 million new jobs.

Allied Van Lines just released the results of the 43rd annual survey of migration patterns across US states.  They analyze the number of inbound and outbound shipments that they handle for each state and measure the states that had the greatest difference in people coming into their states as opposed to leaving.

Comerica has released its initial monthly economic index tracking tool for the Texas economy - the Texas Economic Activity Index.
Comerica recently relocated its corporate headquarter from Michigan to downtown Dallas citing number of reasons.  One of the primary drivers behind this relocation was the strength, diversity and growth history of the Texas economic market.  In conjunction with their relocation, Comerica dug into analyzing Texas economic activity and has devised this unique index measuring the health of the Texas economy....and by default its effect on local jobs and real estate activity.

The Bureau of Economic Analysis has released their compensation analysis for 2009.  They analyzed data for the 3,113 counties in the US.  The largest 167 counties account for 2/3 of the compensation earned in the US - while representing only 5% of the total number of counties.

texas: Texas Adds 19,000 Jobs in November - 12/17/10 10:15 AM
The Texas Workforce Commission has just released their November 2010 employment numbers for the State of Texas.  Employers added over 19,000 jobs during November.  The unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3% primarily because workers who had previously stopped looking for a job have come back into the job market.
These numbers show that Texas has added jobs in 8 of the last 12 months - which means that Texas is outperforming the rest of the US in job creation.  Midland had the lowest unemployment rate at 5.3% and McAllen had the highest at 12%.  I have charted up the unemployment rates … (0 comments)

There's a report out from Brookings Institute that ranks the economic performance top 100 metropolitan areas in the US....and 6 Texas cities are ranked among the top 20 metropolitan areas!
This report is a December update - so it reflects what is actually happening right now on the ground across the US.
Brookings looks at the top 100 metropolitan areas in the US - which account for 2/3 of the nation's jobs and 3/4 of the country's GDP. They then drill down and analyze 4 areas:

Texans like to brag about being the biggest and the best in a lot of things.  I know first-hand as I lived in Texas for over 40 years before relocating to Louisiana.  Now Forbes has confirmed that Texas is number 1 in shopping.
Forbes evaluated the largest metropolitan areas and their retailing statistics to come up with the Forbes top 25 listing.  They looked at the combination of shopping options, ease and affordability...and Texas came up with 5 cities in the top 25!

texas: Texas Expected to Add 250,000 Jobs in 2011 - 12/16/10 08:26 AM
The Dallas Fed has released its estimates for job growth for the State of Texas for 2011 and it contains a whole lot of great news.  The Fed is estimating that Texas employers will create 250,000 jobs in 2011.  This is layered on top of their estimate that through October 2010, those same employers have created 160,000 jobs.
It looks like Texas will have job growth of around 2% for the full year of 2010 and that job growth will accelerate to about a 2.5% growth rate for 2011.
