Posting at 0220...

There is a lot to be said when referring to the old adage, "Make hay when the sun is shining." Sadly, the sun isn't physically shining but metaphorically it is.
My mind "Went off" at 0200 and would not shut off. No use lying in bed. Too much to do. The Spring selling season is in full swing.
Today, I will be working in the business, on the business and who knows, I might even give some folks THE business.
Nevertheless, It is good to be busy and making hay. … (11 comments)

michael thornton: The Warner Parks... - 10/19/12 08:06 PM
The Warner Parks...
As the doldrums of winter fast approach, what's not better for the soul than a slow, peaceful, relaxing drive down a canopied lane? To me, the Warner Parks are an oasis of solitude just a short drive from the restless sea known as "Life in the City".     Nashvillian's are are so fortunate, in that years ago, there were individuals who sat on the Park Service Board that were forward thinking. They they created a 2,600 acre park in South West Davidson County that generations have enjoyed. The park was named after the man who conceived this idea, … (18 comments)

My Fitness Pal...                  There are many of us here in the 'Rain that are becoming more aware of our health and are doing something about it. While Rodger Mucci's group "Take it off in the Rain" is a step in the right direction, I was turned on to an App that adds accountability and more. It is called MyFitnessPal.     MyFitnessPal gives you the online convenience to access your daily fitness goals from your MAC, PC, Droid, iPhone or iPad. You can track everything from your daily food intake, wight loss/gain, exercise routines and there is even an online … (25 comments)

michael thornton: Close, but no Cigar... - 02/27/12 05:17 PM
Close, but no Cigar...                  Back when I was a kid, I picked up the saying, "Close is good in horse shoes and hand grenades". Well, close in those areas is okay but it can be good in weight loss too. As today is Rodger Mucci's weigh-in day for those who want to "Take it off in the Rain", I stepped on the scale with some trepidation this morning. Once again, my weight had been bouncing all over the map but staying well below my last major plateau.     My goal was to be at 192 by the end of … (19 comments)

michael thornton: Size Does Matter... - 01/21/12 09:37 PM
Size Does Matter...     I have been running into many 40 gallon electric water heaters in my inspections, especially in rehabs. While I understand that it is all about turning a profit; 9 times out of ten, I write these up as being improperly sized. Here’s why:      The selection of a particular type hot water supply system for a house is determined by several factors including the utility connections available, utility rates, hot water demand, and owner preference.      There are several methods which can be used to calculate hot water demand. Each possibly will give different results. While no one … (41 comments)

michael thornton: What Are You Known For? - 11/14/11 09:18 PM
What Are You Known For?     I often wonder, do folks take pride in their work anymore? What ever happened to the old adage, "You are known by the work you do"?      It seems as if today, folks are so eager to turn a quick buck, that they whip out substandard crap and proudly put it out on display for all the world to see.     You are known for and establish a reputation for the quality of work you do. What are you known for? More importantly, what are folks saying about you?

That Wasn't Meant to Happen...     Nothing below the Heavens is perfect; especially, on this whiling orb traversing through the vast cosmos. But one would hope that in our tech savvy world, some things would occasionally work as expected.      My gripe? One would think that at 3 or 4AM the servers for this platform would fly - No traffic, no usage, no nothing. Instead, server errors, slow responses, links that take minutes to load...      <sigh> I really like ActiveRain and the folks who frequent this platform. But for me, time is my most valuable commodity and I can ill afford … (54 comments)

Leave it to the Inspector to Spill the Beans...     I'll swear, there is never a slow day in the home inspection industry. Think about it, as long as there are people, houses, and those who like to tinker and do things half-a$$ed; inspectors will always have blog fodder. -- (no need to check out Inspiration - we're already inspired).      Lest I digress, while inspecting a house in the Nashville, TN, I always check behind the washer and dryer for anything unusual. And yes, I came across this unusual way to the washing machine drain line.      Needless to say, it … (27 comments)

Trying to Save a Few Bucks...     <Sigh> I love my job . . . I love my job . . . I really love my job. How many times have we told ourselves that in attempts to convince ourselves that we are REALLY in the right trade or doing the right thing to eke out a living?      While inspecting a total disaster waiting for a place . . .  I ran into enough blog fodder to last a life time.      In this picture, we see an electrical system encased in PVC water pipe. This material while great for cold … (51 comments)

michael thornton: One Never Knows.... - 10/16/11 09:03 PM
One Never Knows...     One never knows what they will find when inspecting new construction properties in Nashville, TN. The other day, I came across this rather “unusual” venting system for the gas water heater.      Now I know that the "codes" officials never miss things important things such as this, how dare!! And we all know that a mechanical inspection is done before the gas meter is set, so how did this make it past the all seeing, scrutinizing eye of the codes inspector? A CO had been issued, so where did the system fail?      It does make one wonder … (34 comments)

michael thornton: More Time On Their Hands... - 10/13/11 10:14 PM
More Time On Their Hands...     I often encounter things during my inspections that really make me wonder. I reckon there are some folks that have more time on their hands than they know what to do with.     Being the inquisitive type, I pondered, how long did it take some schlep to chisel the hole in the foundation pier vs how long would it have taken them to route the pipes around it? But then, maybe that is why plumbers make so much money...

Just When I Think I've Seen it All,someone sets the limbo bar on creative and innovative ways of doing things to an alltime low. Need extra outlets in your room addition? Why bother with the hassle of having meddlesome codes inspectors or the expense of an electrician to do things right when you can do things the half-fast way and save a bundle with the handy-dandy "Jumper MY Circuit" expander.      Run as many extra outlets as you feel you need and plug one end of the "Jumper MY Circuit" expander in one outlet or is that inlet and the … (74 comments)

michael thornton: A Few Bricks Short of a Happy Meal... - 10/01/11 09:44 PM
A Few Bricks Short of a Happy Meal...     I ♥ new construction - never a dull moment. You know the drill, the lowest bid gets the job. And, along with that comes the short cuts to profitise the project.     As we all know, home inspectors are not "Codes" inspectors; however, we must know and understand the "accepted trade practices" for the various professions in the municipalities in which we serve.     The HVAC contractor who installed the furnaces and air handling units for this property must have either been a few bricks short of a Happy Meal or was … (53 comments)

michael thornton: Take the Money and Run... - 09/30/11 10:54 PM
Take the Money and Run...     It is not uncommon to have large, hail producing thunderstorms roll through the Middle Tennessee area. On occasions, some of these storms produce hail stones large enough to damage roof shingles and siding. While we have not had any real bad storms this year,  we have had several of them the past few years.     While inspecting a property in an area of known hail damaged roofs, I was taken by surprise to still see a hail damaged roof in this particular subdivision. Usually when a disaster like this hits an area, the insurance companies … (55 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder...     What better way to kick-start and get your week off on the right foot than with, a good cup of coffee, Active Rain, and a good motivational quote...          "Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the high road to pride, self esteem, and personal satisfaction." ~ Brian Tracy ~          I can only speak for myself, but there are days when I lack self discipline. Those days when IF I had my 'druthers', I'd 'druther' goof off and do what what is fun … (23 comments)

michael thornton: What Would YOU Do? - 09/19/11 10:31 PM
What Would YOU Do?     The most critical characteristic of stairs is that every step be the same. Building codes officials should enforce this rule - some do; some don't. On average, falls on stairs kill 4,000 people a year and another 2 million are seriously injured in the United States.     Many different terms have been used in describing stairs and in this post, I will not get into detail about rise/run/spindle spacing etc.     In the home inspection world, if something doesn't look right, it probably isn't. Walking up this staircase, that little voice went off in my head raising a … (61 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder...     "Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold. But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow. "      ~ Douglas Pagels      There is something about this quote I really like as I continually come back to it when I seem to push too hard. It is far too easy for me to get "hung up" in tasks and chores and let the simple things in … (22 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder...     "People who say that life is not worthwhile are really saying that they themselves have no personal goals which are worthwhile. Get yourself a goal worth working for. Better still, get yourself a project. Always have something ahead of you to "look forward to" ~~ to work for and to hope for. "     ~~ Maxwell Maltz      In my life, I have gone through several peaks and valleys. The peaks have been associated with a goal and having achieved it. Once achieved, I sometimes failed to replace that goal with another; hence … (31 comments)

michael thornton: Out of Sight ~ Out of Mind... - 09/07/11 04:10 AM
Out of Sight ~ Out of Mind...     Over the years, I find it very interesting how negligent home owners can be. "Outta sight, outta mind" seems to be the norm. But, just because something is out of sight, doesn't mean that potential dangers are not lurking just around the corner, or behind your dryer. More often than not, many of the fire hazards that I see in homes are directly related to improper dryer venting practices or materials. The plastic accordion dryer vent material has been banned for use by most all municipalities for use with clothes dryers for years. However, … (48 comments)

Monday Morning Motivator & Some Points to Ponder (Tuesday Edition)...          "Life is about living your Dreams... Not living in them."            ~~ Unknown.          Knowing your dream and living it should be the goal of your life. Far too many people are going through the motions day after day. By knowing your dream and starting to live it, you have a powerful motivator to make positive changes in your life. When pieces of your dream start to become a reality, your life begins to take on a whole new meaning...
