birds: Roost with a view - 06/30/13 02:45 PM

The more we study the habits of birds, the more we find that their entertaining habits are not unlike those of the adults we work with.

How many of us wish to rise to new heights?  What sort of tactics will we resort to in order to do that?

This perch does not look particularly comfy.  It does however have a splendid view of the entire yard.  There have to be advantages to that.  We may not see what he sees but we agree that he has the right to see it.

birds: A Sparrow with Spunk! - 06/30/13 02:29 PM

We are developing a pattern of relaxing over coffee or tea at an area patio.

Relaxation is always good for us,  it allows us to brain storm the days events and sort out solutions before we head for home.

The patio is fringed with scrubs and flowers.

Birds of several kinds also frequent the patio.  Careless patrons leave crumbs which the birds happily clean up.

Sparrows make up a large part of the bird visitors.  They show no fear as they hop within inches of people.

One of the added pluses of sharing ground with the birds … (0 comments)

birds: Bird condo and Bird Realtor - 12/23/12 04:45 AM

On our quick trip to visit Ralph's mom to help celebrate her 89 th birthday, we enjoyed some different scenery.  She lives in Clinton, Maryland right outside Washington DC.  The trip from Houston is long and tiring.  This year the trip was filled with blessings such as a non stop flight.Perhaps the time in the air made me specially mindful of other things that fly. This tree was on the way back to return our rental car.If you look closely you can see several nests on different parts of the tree.  It occurred to me that perhaps the idea of … (0 comments)

birds: Role Models?? Watch your language!!! - 08/04/12 08:27 AM

Have you ever considered how much impact your language has on those around you?

While we were at the Woodlands Mall today, we passed a pet store.  Parakeets in the window brought back a buried memory.
Birds are compact creatures , and considering all things make little mess.

They also have an advantage over cats and dogs because they talk!  Really!  They will repeat things they hear if they hear them often.

The last bird I had was named "Oscar.". He looked a lot like the bird in the photo.

He ruled the roost … (2 comments)

birds: End of our entertainment... - 07/14/12 05:10 AM
Today we found feathers in the back yard under the bird feeder.

Evidently the cooler weather inspired the yard cats to procure a bird snack.

For two years since these cats adopted our yard, we had suspended the feeding of the birds and squirrels.

We did not wish to encourage the critters to come where their lives might be threatened.

Recently we started to put out seeds again.  We thought that the cat food we furnished would keep the feline population satisfied.

Wrong!

birds: Little room at the top.... - 06/17/12 09:12 AM

Everyone should have a bird feeder in their yard.

A simple thing like that provides so many visuals.

Last night we had a dove making a valiant attempt to sit on the very top.

He looks like a fancy knob.

It seemed to be a slippery place to sit but he seemed bent on staying there no matter what the cost.

As I have mentioned before, there are yard cars out there.  Ending up on the ground can have adverse effects.

How like our careers!

birds: Rest and Relaxation... - 06/13/12 01:27 AM
As I glanced out the back window, I noticed a bird was sitting on the back fence.

It appeared to be a dove.

Since we were adopted by our backyard cats, we stopped feeding birds a while back.  It seemed to make sense to choose one or the other.

After a while I noticed the bird was still there.  I sat and watched him preen and stretch.

He was apparently totally comfy.  Again I was concerned for his safety.

A. Full hour later I asked Ralph to go and check on this placid bird.

birds: Ode to "CampHudson". From 1978 - 05/12/12 03:11 AM
Once huge trees stood tall and proud,  forming a bunker between us and the crowd.

They sheltered us from noise and smelly air.

For years they were there for all to share.

In the mornings the sweet sounds of birds, happy frogs and bugs were what we heard.

When life's pressures grew hard to bear, we could put things into perspective just looking over there!

A bit of natural beauty had been preserved, but then due to a developers nerve,  the trees became a memory, something from our past.  Like a dream, they vanished so fast.

birds: Swallows are a little messy but they sure are Cute! - 06/23/11 03:43 PM
This afternoon we met some of Tomball’s less well known residents.    They are small but will get your attention quickly.  We were in one of the businesses close to the Post Office when we happened to look up and see this rather crowded family.  Whenever you feel that you live in crowded quarters, count your blessings.  You no doubt do not share a nest on the edge of a ledge with five other birds of a feather!
Believe it or not this is a group of baby birds not ready for prime time!  This group is bound to be … (3 comments)

birds: If you love Wildlife, Birds and nature in general... Northwest Houston is the place to be! - 05/31/09 01:23 PM
The Northwest area of Houston from FM1960 out through Tomball, Pinehurst, Magnolia, Rosehill and Waller and points further north is rich in the quality of wildlife and birds that all you nature lovers are sure to find quite desirable and thereby find this area to be a terrific place to live and grow your family.  Apparently the Hwy 249 corridor is on the migratory path as the birds move north and south.  My goodness just in our little backyard in Prestonwood Forest we have had Mexican ducks on several occasions, four different variety of dove, a goldfinch, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Sparrows, Blackcap Chickadees, … (0 comments)
