tx: Prestonwood Forest in Houston is a Great Place to Live - 07/01/12 11:26 AM
One of the benefits of living in Prestonwood Forest is the fact that critters like it too.

It once was a forest but since the early 1970 s it has been a subdivision.

The animal life is still prevailant.  They share the area with the families. The families share with each other.

The area is in a migratory path for birds so there are frequent unusual sightings for those who put out feed and seed.

In addition to the birds, we have had  raccoons, possums, skunks, turtles and squirrels as periodic visitors.

The subdivision also enjoys … (2 comments)

tx: We're downsizing.... - 06/28/12 07:37 AM
OK.  I've got 5 of these machines only one has been placed and used.  I know one of my Activerain friends would like to start a little side business.  Load them up with candy and set them out with businesses you trust and make a little pocket money.  You can buy the candy in big bags at places like Sam's or Costco.  I really need to get rid of them so I don't have to move them. Buy one for $150.00 plus shipping or all of them for $400 and I'll pay shipping.  You can even have one around the house … (13 comments)

tx: We just thought it was hot last time. And we're not talking market! - 06/26/12 06:33 AM
A couple of weeks ago we thought it was hot and posted a photo of the thermometer on our patio..... it was right at 100 degrees.
Well.......... here's today's look at the old temperature teller.....  108 degrees plus the heat index.
This is just crazy hot!!  And when you add humidity.... well..... the heat index shoots up faster than a skyrocket.  The humidity must be around 100%.
Now.... if we can just get the market in our area to heat up like the weather!!!!

tx: Trash or treasure - 06/24/12 12:07 PM

When I was a child there was a tallow tree in the back yard.

It was large and dropped a lot of berries and leaves on the yard.

My Dad always called it a "trash" tree.

Yesterday in the brutal Houston heat,  we enjoyed shade from a large tree whose spreading branches provided spectators of a flag football game with expansive comfort.

When I looked up to see what kind of tree it was, I was surprised to find it was a tallow

Thankfully  someone planted it at just the right spot for our … (10 comments)

tx: Goat Lovers unite! - 06/24/12 11:34 AM

As we drove around Montgomery Texas a couple of days ago we happened upon a piece of local history.

This statue and placard are about a well loved goat!  Goat?  Doesn't everyone love them?

Having attempted to own two in the past, I am well aware that most are extremely hard headed, destructive and smelly!

None of those facts seemed to deter the citizens of Montgomery from taking this goat to raise.

There is lots of local color in this small town.  The parks and the antique district are worthy of lots of time.  That … (2 comments)

tx: Seasonal Beauty - 06/21/12 08:33 AM

If you are only going to look good for a couple of weeks, you may be related to this usually ordinary looking flower.

It is a plumaria.  Brings new meaning to the word dull until it blooms forth with magnificent bracts and color.

This week was its time to make every other plant in the garden look second rate.

The first year we spent with the plant it did not give us any clue that it could become a show stopper.  All we got was greenery.

Last year the bloom gave us a short period … (3 comments)

tx: It's Official.... - 06/20/12 05:06 AM
Today it has a reason to be as hot as it has been since March!

Today is the summer solstice!

Summer is a hot season in many ways.  It is one of the most active selling times.

People covet more time for sun and fun.  This means longer traffic times than usual as we all attempt to get to leisure activities.

The weather this year has been unseasonably hot.

Since the temps climbed into the high 80s and low 90s right about the time we were expecting Spring weather, we are braced for extremes now.

tx: Unexpected Blessing ~ Beauty is all around us. - 06/20/12 04:52 AM

Under the unexpected blessing category came this never seen by us beauty.

We are not sure if he is a moth or a butterfly but we think he is a butterfly.
What we do know is that he fluttered in and took up a space under our patio cover.
When he was first sighted, we were not sure if he was a bat, a bird or a butterfly.
He has remained still for about an hour now.  Staying right where he touched down he has allowed for several up close photos.

Having lived in this area most … (1 comments)

tx: The Non-Paying Boarder - 06/19/12 03:27 AM

When we look out our back windows we frequently see native wildlife.

This young squirrel spends a lot of time luxuriating in this feeder.

It is difficult to keep seeds in the feeder due to animals passing thru it on their way to a more substantial one within jumping distance.

During a gentle rain today the squirrel spent most of the morning swinging gently.  Protected from the rain and within easy reach of sunflower seeds,  this squirrel habitat is no doubt a highly desire able place to stay.

My favorite places to stay involve … (1 comments)

tx: Old Town Spring ~ Independence Day Celebration - 06/19/12 03:11 AM

Plan now for a Happy Birthhday  America celebration!

As we did our errands yesterday we passed through one of the area pieces of Americana.

We noted that there is a major event being planned.  You are cordially invited to come share in the celebration according to the sign!

Spring Texas has evolved into a quaint shopping extravaganza.

Antique buildings line several streets . They house everything from health foods, to antiques, to hot sauce, to hardware and various eating establishments from cotton candy and sno-cones to burgers to some things much nicer and heathier!

tx: King of the coop.... - 06/18/12 12:08 PM

This rooster looks as though he would like to carry on a conversation.

He could explain the pecking order in this particular coop.  He could  only if he knew about it.

His predecessor got so aggressive that he had to be disposed of.  He had taken it upon himself to personally
de-feather all the other birds who lived there then.

He made a handsome stuffing that sits over our sons desk.  I guess that proves that everything does have a value.  This serves as a reminder that ruling the roost comes with a cost.

tx: Tree Houses - 06/17/12 11:07 AM

This tree house is very similar to the one my sons Dad built for him about thirty years ago.

It is so neat to see history repeating itself.    The hours He and his brothers played in that structure were fun to watch.

The construction used to build the original tree house taught this son some of the basics of building.

Those skills have been just a few this now successful commercial realtor learned from observing those around him.

Time spent with our children produces great dividends.  Time is one of the most precious gifts any … (4 comments)

tx: Today is a Multiple Holiday day! - 06/17/12 10:14 AM
While everyone has been paying great homage to us Fathers there are other notable holidays that are reserved for today!
Today is Eat Your Vegetables day.  Remember how your parents always told you to eat your vegetables?  Well, this is the day!  Think about it vegies are great for good health and long life and they're tasty. Practice your good nutrition by substituting a veggie for some junk food today.
Then there's the Bunker Hill Day! Which commerates the Battle of Bunker Hill that took place in 1775!  One of the many battles of the Revolutionary War.  So while you're giving … (1 comments)

tx: Little room at the top.... - 06/17/12 09:12 AM

Everyone should have a bird feeder in their yard.

A simple thing like that provides so many visuals.

Last night we had a dove making a valiant attempt to sit on the very top.

He looks like a fancy knob.

It seemed to be a slippery place to sit but he seemed bent on staying there no matter what the cost.

As I have mentioned before, there are yard cars out there.  Ending up on the ground can have adverse effects.

How like our careers!

Being on top is never easy … (1 comments)

tx: Pain impacts lots of thing... - 06/17/12 04:01 AM
After spending several years recovering from an illness which put me in a wheelchair for months,  I have become accustomed to being pain free!

It is so much better than being uncomfortable 24/7!

Getting off all the prescribed drugs including Morphine was freeing!  I made a mental note NOT to go back there!

Then out of the clear sky pain assailed my right foot yesterday.  It was probably due to something I ate!

No kidding!  What We put into our bodies is incredibly important!

There had also been a lot of stress during the week. … (6 comments)

tx: Skeletal reminders.... - 06/17/12 12:44 AM

This large and lovely tract of land in Northwest Houston offers sad reminders of the drought of last summer.

Trees are a large part of the appeal for the area.  They offer feelings of serenity and often provide enough shade to make temperatures more temperate.

The dead tree fringe is beautiful in its own way.

Since they do not threaten to fall on any structures or roadways,  they may be allowed to stay right where they are.

They do not offer shade or the ability to clean up the air as to the live trees. … (13 comments)

tx: Rainy Day Mondays.... - 06/17/12 12:35 AM
Refreshing rain fell at the first of the week.

It  was  appreciated by all residents in this area.  The plants seem to sigh a grateful sound as they turn their blossoms and leaves to the sky to absorb the wetness.

When rain falls in large quantities over short periods of time it fills up spaces not necessarily able to contain it.  Such is the case in our yard.

It is times like this that we rejoice in the fact that we have created some drainage channels in the yard.

Right off our patio is one of those … (1 comments)

tx: Last minute cold feet... - 06/17/12 12:25 AM
Fifteen minutes before our scheduled closing on Friday we got a call from the buyer.  He wanted to do a walk through on the house he is supposed to be buying.  Fortunately the property is only a couple of miles from the Title Company

Yesterday?  This morning?  An hour ago?

All of those would have been much better options for a walk through.

Ralph took off to meet the buyer at the house.  He left me behind to meet the sellers and anyone else who might be involved.

This has been a long two months with one … (1 comments)

tx: Jockey for position.... - 06/14/12 02:51 AM

Have you noticed how all of the animal species (and people included) compete to be number one?

The squirrels in our yard provided us with this visual today as they continually changed positions on their favorite feeder.

One squirrel was dominating the space.  There was plenty of area for two to enjoy adequate room but that was clearly not allowable.

Most of the Real Estate offices  I have been affiliated with over the past 34 years are similar.

There is always one or two agents who dominate the office.  Sometimes it is because they are … (25 comments)

tx: Rest and Relaxation... - 06/13/12 01:27 AM
As I glanced out the back window, I noticed a bird was sitting on the back fence.

It appeared to be a dove.

Since we were adopted by our backyard cats, we stopped feeding birds a while back.  It seemed to make sense to choose one or the other.

After a while I noticed the bird was still there.  I sat and watched him preen and stretch.

He was apparently totally comfy.  Again I was concerned for his safety.

A. Full hour later I asked Ralph to go and check on this placid bird.
