icww: Rocking and rolling (with the nor'easter) on Topsail Island! - 09/26/08 04:04 AM
Considering the fact that Hurricane Hanna was touted as such a big deal a couple of weeks ago, this nor'easter was more damaging (to the beach). As the storm came ashore on astronomically high tides, the intracoastal waterway (normally a quarter mile from our back garden) rose to spill into the sound and then into our marsh. Amazing! We walked out to the beach yesterday, just at high tide and we were stunned to see the huge waves. There was a great deal of debris in the water, from stairs and sand fencing, so there is going to be a bit … (0 comments)

icww: Sunday on Topsail Island - 08/31/08 07:12 AM
It is the final HUGE week end for the summer visitors on Topsail Island. Both Kathy and I noted yesterday that the ICWW was sidewallk to sidewalk with boaters. The weather is hot, humid and perfectly suited to a day on the water, lazily making your way to the marina in Surf City, or down to Bluewater for a leisurely lunch. The "ditch" is coastal North Carolina's liquid interstate highway, providing ingress and egress to the myriad water based communities along its length. One of the super parts of living where we do is that we can watch the tugboats manuevering … (2 comments)

icww: Living on Topsail Time - 07/08/08 02:35 PM

Jet skis are a popular form of transport up and down the Channel.

As for boats, we have 'em. Sail, motor, yachts, sportsfishers, they are all here!

This is just one of the marinas either on the island or close by. This is the Harbour Village Marina, located just off the Intracoastal in Hampstead. We also have a full service marina, The Beach House, on Topsail Island. Topsail is a favorite spot for wintering for many of the boats on their way back south after spending the summer months up north. Topsail Island is viewable from … (0 comments)

icww: Just a couple of days til the Fourth! - 07/02/08 11:12 AM
Topsail Island is filled with visitors, tourist, locals and their family members ready to celebrate the Fourth. Whether you are here from California or just up the road in Wilmington, there is glorious weather to be enjoyed this week, to be sure. July 3rd, there will be fireworks and a festival at our Surf City Soundside Park. We noticed as we crossed the swing bridge today that the boardwalk there is decked out with bunting and the flags are flying! There is no more beautiful sight than seeing fireworks explode over your head as you sit in the boat gently rocking … (0 comments)

icww: Hot, Hot, Hot! - 06/10/08 08:09 AM
We cannot be the only folks suffering in this heat - our friends in Arizona must be experiencing that "dry heat" (Hi Leolinda!). Our North Carolina heat is more like a wet towel that smacks you in the face when you walk out the door. Thankfully, since we are here on the coast on Topsail Island, we always have an ocean breeze to lessen the impact of the heat. As we move into the cities of Wilmington and Jacksonville, it becomes painfully apparent that all that asphalt and pavement really does add to heat index.
We are headed out for an … (0 comments)
