Hawaii Island has three active volcanos. While the risk of having a lava flow inundate any individual property on the island is low, the hazard is not the same in all areas. The USGS geologists and volcanologists put together a series of Lava-Flow Hazard Maps over the years, most recently in 1992. This map has 9 hazard zones with lava zone 1 being the most hazardous and 9 considered to have the least hazard of lava flow inundation. Many of the luxury homes sold in Kona are used as second homes and sit empty for much of the year. I was visiting a friend in the upscale, gated Keauhou Estates recently and was surprised to see about 90% of the homes empty with the lights out. After competing in a hand full of sprint triathlons, I decided to sign up for the Keauhou Lavaman 2012. It's an olympic distance race consisting of a 1.5K swim followed my a 40K bike ride and a 10K run. I just reviewed the Kona real estate market data as of March 2012 and it looks very similar to last year at this point. The North Kona District saw 56 single family homes sold in the first three months of 2012 compared to 58 homes sold during the same period in 2011. Land sales are also looking very similar to last year with 8 transactions year to date compared to 7 in 2011. Mahaiula Beach is located within the Keha Kai State Park about 8 miles North of Kailua-Kona. The access road off of Hwy 11 is between mile markers 88 and 89. Kua Bay is one of my favorite Kona Beaches. Located in the Kehaka Kai State Park, in a spectacular setting, Kua Bay is about 10 miles North of Kailua-Kona off of Hwy 11 between mile markers 88 and 89 and surrounded by lava fields.
