city center: Reflections From Two Mirrored Towers: The Ritz Carlton of White Plains Reflects the Mood of the Day – White Plains, NY 10601 - 08/29/08 05:34 PM
Although I hate to admit it, I’ve become somewhat fascinated by the Ritz Carlton.  I’m not generally a fan of modern architecture. My personal taste leans more to the art nouveau look of the Bar Building which stands in ornate contrast to the sleek towers.  But one thing I have noticed about the two 42 story towers gracing our downtown is that they never look the same. Like a chameleon that changes its coloring to blend into its surroundings, the mirrored façade of the Ritz is constantly changing to reflect the “mood” of the sky at any given moment – changing … (12 comments)

city center: Old Meets New in Downtown White Plains....White Plains, NY 10601 - 06/07/08 04:32 PM
Recently, I have been taking more general photos of the White Plains downtown area. I'm often surprised at the clash of architectural styles. I guess part of my surprise is the way in which the clashing styles actually work together. When you see an Art Nouveau building standing directly next to mirrored glass and steel, the effect can be jarring. Here on some shots of the “old” and “new” that I had previously discarded. They are all within about a block to block and a half between each other...

city center: The City Never Sleeps – I’m talking about WHITE PLAINS, NY! - 04/08/08 09:50 PM
Buyers from  New York City are forever asking me if there is any nightlife in Westchester? And the answer is YES THERE IS!Downtown White Plains is bustling 24/7 these days and for those who enjoy the active night life of New York City, having such a hub near at hand makes the adjustment to more sedate suburban living far more enjoyable.  I will not try to compare what White Plains has to offer to Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera House. In the end, there is only ONE Manhattan, but the amenities of that particular city are just minutes away by train.  … (10 comments)

city center: This Hawk Tells You why Real Estate is Truly a LOCAL BUSINESS..... - 04/07/08 08:25 PM
The picture of that hawk was taken by yours truly one morning. I had just let out the dogs into my back yard (yes its fenced) while I started making my essential morning brew when I noticed that Buddy barking at something and looking UP....I peered out the kitchen window into the back and looked in his direction and saw a very large hawk sitting in my neighbor's tree peering imperiously at the three dogs below. I've seen hawks in those trees before, either on my property with m neighbors, but was never able to capture the image. I grabbed my … (18 comments)

city center: Introducing Scarsdale, NY 10583 - A Pictorial Overview - 03/18/08 08:51 PM
Scarsdale, NY 10583 had  the distinction of  earning the number two spot on CNNMoney.com’s top-earning towns survey in 2007 with a median household income of close to $220,000.  Living in Scarsdale certainly doesn’t come  as cheaply as does in some other municipalities in Westchester   However,  one certainly doesn’t need over $200k in household income to afford one of the wonderful coops on Garth Rd.  A one bedroom coop in Scarsdale can set you back about $200,000 depending on size, condition and complex. My blog on the pet-friendly coop Colchester Hall on Garth Road gives a good overview about the entry level … (17 comments)

city center: Introducing White Plains, NY 10601 – The County Seat of Westchester – Photo Overview IV – The Softer Side of Downtown White Plains – Tibbets Park - 03/02/08 05:21 PM
Although I have depicted downtown White Plains as mostly steel, glass and concrete, the downtown has a softer side once you get to the downtown residential areas on and around North Broadway.  It’s an amazing transition really.  The hubbub of the downtown ends abruptly at North Broadway where the west side of the street is part of the concrete, glass and steel jungle and the eastern side of Broadway becomes purely residential.  Many older coop complexes grace the eastern side of North Broadway giving the area an distinctly residential and more subdued feel when compared to the area by City Center … (4 comments)

city center: Residential Neighborhoods: Gedney Farms – White Plains, NY 10605 - 02/07/08 07:17 AM
When clients are looking for high-end single family homes with plenty of green space and old-world charm – Gedney Farms is the first neighborhood that comes to mind in  White Plains.  Gedney Farms was named after John Gedney  who bought the land in 1740.   Gedney Farms was a working farm right that remained within the Gedney family right through the Civil War.  It has long ceased to be farmland and is now a well established neighborhood.  Through much of the Gedney area the  zoning is for no more than three homes per acre, so most lots have at least .33 acres … (4 comments)

city center: Pet-Friendly Coops: Colchester Hall - 143 Garth Road, Scarsdale, NY 10583 - 01/30/08 01:24 PM
Garth Road in Scarsdale, NY is famous for its coop units.  Many people come to me with a specific request for a unit on  Garth Rd.  Located right off the Bronx River Parkway and just steps from the Scarsdale Train Station, it is easy to understand why.  Garth Rd. is convenient to the Village of Scarsdale and all it has to offer.  With high –end shopping and first class dining.  Being able to leave the car and walk a block or two to the train also holds an enormous advantage.  The city is just steps to the train and a 30 … (11 comments)

city center: Shopping in Westchester: The Container Store - 145 Westchester Ave., White Plains, NY 10601 - 01/24/08 08:42 PM
One of the primary advantages of living in lower Westchester and White Plains NY in particular, is the shopping.  Sometimes it seems as if there is a shop for just about anything around here.   One all-time-favorite is “The Container Store.” The container store has store loations in 20 states with four stores in the New York area. The store in White Plains is right off of I287 at Exit 8W. It is across from the Westchester Mall, one of prime shopping locations in White Plains and just a short walk from the City Center.   One of the reasons I am … (6 comments)

city center: Introducing White Plains, NY, - The County Seat of Westchester - Photographic Overview - 11/28/07 04:33 PM
It has recently occurred to me that I have been assuming too much.  I never truly introduced the City of White Plains or any of the other Westchester municipalities for that matter.  Those who live here and are thinking of moving here (and have down their research) - naturally have an understanding of the area. However, I ran into a new potential client in a coffee shop on Sunday and although he lived in NYC and had been there for some time - Westchester and White Plains were like another planet.  He had no idea how URBAN the downtown was and … (12 comments)

city center: Development: How Much is Too Much? How High is Too High? - 10/13/07 08:55 PM
White Plains, NY is in transition.  And there as many opinions about the state of this transition as there are citizens.   We are a city of two distinct populations. The citizen population which is growing rapidly as a result of the new residential developments mushrooming all over the city.   If our live-in population has not reached the 60,000 mark, it will soon.  Meanwhile there is the White Plains, NY commuter population that works here but lives elsewhere. This population is well over 300,000 and also increasing rapidly. I won’t even discuss the throngs that come to shop here. White Plains is … (0 comments)

The Longacre Gardens coop is located slightly north of the downtown area of White Plains.  It is a garden-style complex built in 1953.  The second floor units are walk-ups. The units have excellent layouts and several listings show extensive renovations for a fully updated look. The layouts lend themselves to updating.  Unlike many complexes of this era, parquet floors (not carpet) are standard.
