Although I hate to admit it, I’ve become somewhat fascinated by the Ritz Carlton. I’m not generally a fan of modern architecture. My personal taste leans more to the art nouveau look of the Bar Building which stands in ornate contrast to the sleek towers. But one thing I have noticed about the two 42 story towers gracing our downtown is that they never look the same. Like a chameleon that changes its coloring to blend into its surroundings, the mirrored façade of the Ritz is constantly changing to reflect the “mood” of the sky at any given moment – changing … (12 comments)

Recently, I have been taking more general photos of the White Plains downtown area. I'm often surprised at the clash of architectural styles. I guess part of my surprise is the way in which the clashing styles actually work together. When you see an Art Nouveau building standing directly next to mirrored glass and steel, the effect can be jarring. Here on some shots of the “old” and “new” that I had previously discarded. They are all within about a block to block and a half between each other...

Buyers from New York City are forever asking me if there is any nightlife in Westchester? And the answer is YES THERE IS!Downtown White Plains is bustling 24/7 these days and for those who enjoy the active night life of New York City, having such a hub near at hand makes the adjustment to more sedate suburban living far more enjoyable. I will not try to compare what White Plains has to offer to Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera House. The picture of that hawk was taken by yours truly one morning. I had just let out the dogs into my back yard (yes its fenced) while I started making my essential morning brew when I noticed that Buddy barking at something and looking UP....I peered out the kitchen window into the back and looked in his direction and saw a very large hawk sitting in my neighbor's tree peering imperiously at the three dogs below. Scarsdale, NY 10583 had the distinction of earning the number two spot on CNNMoney.com’s top-earning towns survey in 2007 with a median household income of close to $220,000. Living in Scarsdale certainly doesn’t come as cheaply as does in some other municipalities in Westchester However, one certainly doesn’t need over $200k in household income to afford one of the wonderful coops on Garth Rd. A one bedroom coop in Scarsdale can set you back about $200,000 depending on size, condition and complex. Although I have depicted downtown White Plains as mostly steel, glass and concrete, the downtown has a softer side once you get to the downtown residential areas on and around North Broadway. It’s an amazing transition really. The hubbub of the downtown ends abruptly at North Broadway where the west side of the street is part of the concrete, glass and steel jungle and the eastern side of Broadway becomes purely residential. When clients are looking for high-end single family homes with plenty of green space and old-world charm – Gedney Farms is the first neighborhood that comes to mind in White Plains. Gedney Farms was named after John Gedney who bought the land in 1740. Gedney Farms was a working farm right that remained within the Gedney family right through the Civil War. One of the primary advantages of living in lower Westchester and White Plains NY in particular, is the shopping. Sometimes it seems as if there is a shop for just about anything around here. Scarsdale Country Estates are located on Campus Place and Sentry Pl. directly off of Central Ave. Although they have a Scarsdale, P.O. address, it is important to clarify that they are actually located in the town of Greenburgh in the famous Edgemont school district. It has recently occurred to me that I have been assuming too much. I never truly introduced the City of White Plains or any of the other Westchester municipalities for that matter. White Plains, NY is in transition. And there as many opinions about the state of this transition as there are citizens. We are a city of two distinct populations. The citizen population which is growing rapidly as a result of the new residential developments mushrooming all over the city. If our live-in population has not reached the 60,000 mark, it will soon. Meanwhile there is the White Plains, NY commuter population that works here but lives elsewhere. This population is well over 300,000 and also increasing rapidly.
