downtown white plains: Fotos On The Fly - Downtown White Plains at Dusk - 05/28/14 04:09 AM
Clock Tower – downtown White Plains NY
One of a series of photos I took in downtown White Plains at dusk.  Some things just have a different look at twilight.  The clock tower looks quite dramatic all lit up with the vibrant sunset in the background.  Wish I could say it was more inspiring by the light of day.
I was somewhat lucky because I happened along at the right time of day and was able to park my car about a block away from the site that I wanted to shoot.  Since the sky changes rapidly at that time of day, … (19 comments)

downtown white plains: Real Estate Photography - Photographing Condos & Coop Common Areas... - 08/30/13 06:53 PM
When buyers look at a condo or cooperative complex, they are buying more than the unit, they are buying the lifestyle.  How the common areas are presented online and in brochures can really have an impact on overall interest.   Naturally, if your buyer craves a sleek modern look, the ornate detail of an Art Nouveau is going to attract them.  But on the other hand it may win over a buyer who loves pre-war architecture and moldings.  Buyers do tend to purchase a house or condo that feels "right" for them.  Certainly something like the entry, even though it is … (4 comments)

downtown white plains: Photographing Real Estate - Condo/Coop Exteriors - 08/26/13 03:27 PM
In real estate photography, the classic shot of the front of a home is traditionally referred to as the "money shot".  When it comes to condos and cooperatives, many agents underestimate the importance of exteriors and common areas.   For this type of housing, common spaces and exteriors can be easy to overlook particularly if the building is somewhat generic.  In other cases, such as with pre-war buildings as well as modern luxury buildings, these common area photographs can really make a positive impact.  Sometimes you have to think a bit outside the box.  A simple straight-on photo of the front … (5 comments)

downtown white plains: Fotos On The Fly - For holiday lights - sometimes less is more.... - 12/24/12 03:26 AM
Christmas lights are everywhere in Westchester this time of year - from the spectacular to the gaudy to the very simple.   So I'm putting up a very simple display today to show how simple sometimes is better than over-the-top. This is a balcony from a pre-war building in downtown White Plains NY.  So I used HDR to bring out the texture of the brick and wrought iron railings. The simple lights let the texture and pre-war character of the building shine and still provided holiday cheer.   Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season.

downtown white plains: Holiday lights dressed up in basic black... - 12/20/12 03:43 AM
About a week ago I was kindly invited by a resident to take some photos at a coop complex in downtown White Plains called the Broadlawn.   The pre-war complex is know for its subtle use of white lights in its courtyard during the holiday season.     At first I thought this would be 100% color photos.  But  a couple of the pictures really underwhelmed me in color and I just had a gut instinct that black and white would work better.  So I converted this photo and VOILA!  It had a much better effect.
People often say that "the camera never … (12 comments)

downtown white plains: Westchester is not the moon – Commuting to Manhattan is a breeze…. - 09/24/12 03:12 PM

Haven’t been posting as much lately because I have been very busy.  I’m still busy with clients and working hard generally, so getting to update the blog has taken a back seat.
The weekend before last I took a rare day off to  help  a friend move from her upper east side apartment to the her new digs in the upper west side.  In so doing, we made good use of my Honda Element taking things back and forth and loading the car with new goodies to decorate the new abode.

And yes, shutterbug that I am, I was … (4 comments)

downtown white plains: Fotos On the Fly: Downtown White Plains – “The City in the Park” - 04/25/12 12:09 PM
It was a cruel twist of irony that this shutterbug was trapped indoors during the glorious weather last week taking her real estate CE classes.  Though the classes were terrific, weather-wise this would have been a better week to be indoors!   But I was able to take advantage of one of my lunch periods to get some shots of Downtown White Plains in its spring glory.

downtown white plains: December’s Season of Celebrations & Sharing - New Years Eve Family Spectacular – Downtown White Plains NY - 12/25/11 03:53 AM

Yes, I know its Christmas day – but New Year’s Eve is just a week away…and its not too soon to think about where you will be when 2011 becomes a memory and 2012 is born.
For those who don’t know the history – downtown White Plains used to be a fairly quiet place.  During the housing boom the downtown became built up an is now thought of as a mini-me Manhattan.  Following the opening of Trump Tower and  the Ritz Carlton – a new tradition was born.  White Plains initiated a new tradition of celebrating New Years Eve in … (6 comments)

downtown white plains: Small Business Saturday – Stores to visit in White Plains NY - 11/22/11 04:43 AM
Small Business Saturday  had its debut last year.   But they are upping the publicity and ante this year.  In my opinion – a program like this is a step in the right direction.  In Washington they jawbone about supporting small business – but talk is not action.  Yet small business, including bricks and mortars  have traditionally been the backbone of American exceptionalism and success. They need and deserve our patronage and support.
Our love affair with big-box stores and rock bottom prices has  come at a price.  Service?  What’s that?  Knowledge of the product? You’ve got to be kidding me?   In … (18 comments)

downtown white plains: Downsizing in Style – Luxury condos & townhouses in White Plains NY have become more affordable… - 10/30/11 06:56 PM

Many homeowners in lower Westchester have been hoping to downsize but stay local.   In some cases, the children are gone but these empty nesters have careers that keep them local or perhaps some have grandchildren that live in the area and they wish to stay near family.  Particularly after the big storm that we had yesterday – downsizing to something a bit easier to manage feels right for those who have been struggling with Nor’ Easters and hurricanes.  We now seem to be having the storm of the century every six months – and tackling all the resulting issues … (11 comments)

downtown white plains: Update on Trump Tower of White Plains NY - 09/18/11 04:56 PM
Trump Tower White Plains NY – is one of the buildings that dominates the downtown White Plains skyline.  It was the first of the high rise complexes to go up in the city and it was the tallest building in White Plains until the Ritz made its appearance at the end of 2007.  As far as White Plains condos go, Trump ranks among the most luxurious.  This is one complex people are always asking about.  So I’m giving an update near the end of the 3rd quarter in response to all the questions about Trump and the Ritz.  For more … (6 comments)

downtown white plains: Update on the Ritz Carlton of White Plains - 09/15/11 04:54 PM
The Ritz Carlton White Plains represents the pinnacle of high-rise luxury in downtown White Plains, not to mention the county of Westchester.  As far as White Plains condos are concerned, it doesn’t get any more luxurious than this!  Located in the heart of the downtown area, it is just steps from some of the finest dining, entertainment and shopping that  Westchester has to offer.  Lets not even get started on the amazing amenities the Ritz offers – and the views on the higher floors are simply breathtaking. You can get Manhattan, the Long Island Sound and everything in between in … (6 comments)

downtown white plains: The White Plains Beautification Foundation & the “city in the park” - 07/12/11 09:32 PM

White Plains NY has often been referred to as “the city in the park”.  It has a long tradition of trying to maintain green spaces even when pressure from developers would turn the entire downtown into a solid block  of concrete, brick, mortar, steel and glass.  Thanks to activist citizens, the green “feel” has been maintained.  Not without many a fight and not without a great deal of help from several organizations.

Trump Tower – White Plains – Sales History -  2006-2010* The chart below follows the median sales price of 2 BR units at Trump from 2006 through 2009.  Sales of 1BR and 3BR units were too sparse to make any statistical trends valid.  The average sales price peaked in the second half of 2006.  After that there was a gradual decline in the average price which appeared to be leveling off until the the crash of 2008.  Like the rest of White Plains,  prices declined significantly following the stock market crash.  accelerated after the stock market crash of 2008. … (4 comments)

downtown white plains: Update on the Bengal Tiger – Downtown White Plains NY - 07/08/10 07:23 PM

As posted yesterday, the Bengal Tiger – a landmark Indian restaurant in downtown White Plains went up in flames yesterday.  The cooking oil that was everywhere combined with 100 degree temperatures and flammable chemicals from the adjacent dry cleaners caused the fire to rapidly escalate into a 5 alarm fire.  Over 160 firefighters from White Plains and neighboring communities responded to the blaze.  The roof collapsed about 5 hours after the blaze began.  The fire is now “under control” but not over. 25 were overcome by smoke inhalation and the heat and taken to area hospitals.

downtown white plains: The landmark Bengal Tiger goes up in flames - 07/07/10 09:51 PM
One of the famous downtown White Plains restaurants went up in flames today as a fire – which started in the basement spread to engulf the entire restaurant and take out half a block on East Post Road in White Plains NY. The location, just off of Mamaroneck Avenue in the heart of the downtown, complicated matters as smoke engulfed the area with temperatures near triple digits.  The five alarm fire demolished the Bengal Tiger and three other businesses – effectively destroying a half a block of the downtown area.  60 firefighters were from several communities were battling the flames.  The … (2 comments)
