my pets: Kittens in need of rescue.... - 07/09/08 06:13 PM
Every once in a while I get a very sad email about an overload in the shelters. I got such a letter today from friend of mine involved in rescuing animals in Westchester. She asked for me to pass it, which I have and I am also posting this.
Apparently there is such an overload that the clock is ticking on 60 kittens of varying ages - from about three weeks to several months of age.
I'm posting the information - along with a few shots of the kittens in question. Perhaps people within the AR community or among … (7 comments)

my pets: Just in Case You Wondered….. - 05/24/08 04:47 PM
I have had several wonderful comments about how pretty my dogs are. And as a proud canine mother, I have to admit, I really think they are special! However, I have made pains that most of the photos I take of them show them in their best light. This has led to speculation that they are ALWAYS this white and fluffy and that they NEVER get into any messes. PLEASE – they’re DOGS! Huskies to boot! So just so no one is disabused of the assumption that my pets are always clean and fluffy or harbor any notions that they don’t … (19 comments)

my pets: Lost & Found: Rescued kitten in need of new family..... - 04/25/08 09:17 PM
It was the night before my famous "tax extension experience." I was running late trying to get all my deduction ducks lined up in a row and was planning on a long night. But I needed to run a couple of errands. There was no food in the house - at least not for people and my car was running on gasoline vapors. I decided to get the gasoline first and I drove into the gas station bleary over all I had done and what was yet to come. As I was pumping my gasoline I noticed a small animal dodging … (12 comments)

my pets: Dog Diaries - The History of my Canine Family.... - 02/09/08 07:42 PM
A couple of people have asked me how i came to own Siberian Huskies.  To be sure it is not like owning Labrador Retrievers or German Shepherds and the like. The truth be told, I came to love the breed quite by accident.  Many of you know the history of Harley who passed away somewhere between 15.5-16 years of age this past spring. But as I was going about loading pictures onto my new computer, I saw such nice shots of my dogs both past and present, that I thought I would share the pictures and say something about the personalities … (6 comments)

my pets: Yonkers Animal Shelter Needs Your Blankets....(Yonkers, NY 10704) - 12/20/07 05:35 PM

What do these dogs have in common?  No, they aren't all mine  - I may be crazy about dogs, but I'm not that crazy - although I do claim Buddy - the blue eyed dog as my own.  These dogs were all adopted from shelters or could have easily ended up in shelters.
The Yonkers Animal Shelter has almost 90 dogs in residence right now and many do not have blankets to keep them warm.  For Westchester residents who are reading this blog - if you have extra old blankets you are no longer using, could you drop them off at … (3 comments)

my pets: Pet Blinkers - See your Dog no Matter How Dark it Gets! - 11/05/07 07:50 PM
Where did you get that? I asked  Susan, the owner of two great dogs Tuco and Katie.  She had just turned on her dog’s new “pet blinkers.”  With a simple turn, the blinkers turned on and lit up the dusk sky looking something like the blinking lights of a Christmas tree – only much stronger.  We were talking with each other at the Kingsland Point Park in Sleepy Hollow, NY.  I had seen reflectors on dog collars and many other gimmicks that were supposed to help illuminate your pet at night, but none worked so well as pet blinkers. As the … (10 comments)

my pets: Happy Halloween - From Jade & Tundra at Kingsland Point Park's Dog Park in Sleepy Hollow, NY - 10/30/07 07:26 PM
One day my vet was looking at one of my white Siberian Huskies one day when she had a distinctly gray tinge around the neck.  It was coming from the tag on her collar.  She shook her head and said “It’s hard to be a white dog!”  Another vet that I use for surgeries laughed when he saw the two “girls” and said – “White dogs always like to roll in the mud!” Often, I forget just HOW white these guys are.  So, I decided for a special treat, that it was time to have Jade and Tundra professionally groomed. Buddy … (2 comments)

my pets: Harley: In Loving Memory of a Great Dog (1991/1992-May4, 2007) - 10/10/07 09:31 AM
Our pets are our friends. They are also part of the family.  Here is the story of a member of my family. She had a long life and it shows what can happen when you open your heart and home to an animal that has been abandoned.
The story of Harley is the story of a dog that was born with every disadvantage. Had a few kind humans not intervened, Harley would have been long gone by her second year.  Nevertheless, she beat the odds and found two great homes with which to live out her life. How Harley spent her first … (42 comments)

my pets: Puttin’ On the Dog: - 10/05/07 07:47 PM
On Sunday September 30, Adopt-A-Dog held the 20th annual “Puttin’ On the Dog” show and festival in Greenwich, CT. For those who don’t know lower Westchester, NY, Greenwich, CT is just about 15 minutes Northeast of White Plains, NY.
Adopt-A-Dog has been around for 26 years. It is located in New York, but it was incorporated in Connecticut. They have a full-service kennel in Armonk, NY which allows for temporary shelter for homeless dogs and cats. Adopt-A-Dog has evolved into not-for-profit rescue/adoption service. The festival is a fund-raiser as well as an event that helps to raise awareness and “exposure” for … (4 comments)

my pets: A Source of Inspiration - How I Became a Pet-Friendly Agent - 09/23/07 10:16 PM
How did I start out as a pet-friendly agent?  All new agents actively seek a niche for themselves.  With so many agents around, it is difficult to distinguish yourself from the pack.  Having three dogs myself, I was fortunate enough to own a single-family home, but I have many friends with dogs and cats that don't have that option in an area as expensive as Westchester.  Many, particularly those with larger dogs, have struggled to find places to live. Once they move, be it to a rental, coop or condo, they feel that their options are limited.  Some feel "stuck."  If … (6 comments)

my pets: The Dogmobile and Real Estate Agent's Car - 09/20/07 08:19 AM
So many agents talk about their cars.  How their cars influence sales.  How the public perception of the agent is influenced by the car they drive.  Well, here is a new twist: I have three rather substantial dogs that ALSO must be transported from place to place. Yet my car needs to look reasonably up-to-date (this is Westchester) and clean.
When it came time to get a new car, I had to debate how I was going to handle this situation.  The larger dogs forced me towards a station wagon/SUV, but I wanted good mileage.  I also wanted something easy to … (13 comments)
