white plains: Fotos On The Fly - Sights Of The Season - Santa making tracks on a tractor... - 12/19/13 11:48 PM
My latest and greats on my “Sights Of The Season” series – Previous installments can be accessed through my Holiday Season Archive of this blog which includes photos from Halloween onward.
Some photos are just plain FUN to take.  Santa is visiting White Plains on his vintage tractor!  After all, getting out all those Reindeer can be a challenge so backup transportation is sometimes in order.  And his presence certainly breathes new life into this great vintage tractor!
Love the imagination that went into this!

Hello everyone, this is the longest absence from my blog that I have had since I began it in late 2008.  A brief illness kept me from writing.  I am pleased to say that I am now back at work and just fine.
The Saint Patricks Day celebrations begin in earnest this weekend in lower Westchester.  So I thought I would  come back to my blog with some wearing of the green!
White Plains NY: The White Plains 15th annual St. Patricks Day Parade begins at 12 noon – Saturday March 10  The parade begins at  12 noon at the intersection … (7 comments)

white plains: For a Fabulous 4th of July – Check Out the Following Lower Westchester Events & Stay Local - 06/29/10 09:41 PM

Last year I wrote a post about the 4th of July events in Lower Westchester and it was a huge success.  I even had people calling me for directions.  Although going to the city is great – the Westchester to NYC commute can be painful on a busy holiday. And there really isn’t any need -there is plenty to do right here in Westchester.  Soooooo….here’s the list for 2010.
Wednesday June 30: Fireman’s Parade – Mamaroneck NY – Rain date – July 1

white plains: White Plains Outdoor Arts Festival - 2009 - 06/02/09 03:42 AM
Things to do and see in Westchester, White Plains
It was a great day in the Hudson Valley - after all the rain we’ve had recently,  it was wonderful to be outside on a warm and SUNNY day.  White Plains has always been know for its shopping and more recently fine dining.  High-end housing in high rise luxury buildings is also something that White Plains is famous for.  But it has lagged behind in the arts.  Yes, we have our own theater, the Westchester Philharmonic under the baton of Itzhak Perlman  calls White Plains its “home.”  But only now is White … (2 comments)

white plains: White Plains NY - Housing and Market Statistics for First Quarter 2009 - 05/05/09 05:56 PM
White Plains real estate defied gravity for three years. For a while - quite a while - it looked as if the housing recession would pass White Plains by with nary a flicker in the prices. The stock market crash on Wall Street shook the system up and prices have started to come down. Even before the crash, single family homes had started to decline in price. But Coop and condo sales remained stubbornly high. The only major sign of trouble was decreased sales volume, but as long as inventories remained low - with few people selling - higher prices were … (2 comments)

white plains: In Memory of Marc Pollitzer - Age 61 - White Plains Activist - 06/13/08 10:31 PM
It seems as though I am spending a great deal of time blogging about those who have passed. Marc Pollitzer may not have been Tim Russert, but in White Plains hew was a champion of open space and advocate for responsible development. At the end of the day, politics is local and Marc Pollitzer exemplified the heart and soul of the grass-roots activist. When I heard of his death on May 29th, I felt as though someone had punched me in the stomach. He was at every meeting month after month. I would see him on cable T.V. very calm, forthright … (7 comments)

white plains: Help for I-287 Travelers - Weary of the "Improvements" Happening in White Plains, NY - 06/12/08 07:34 AM
Since 2006, I287 has been undergoing some massive improvements - Ok the term is relative, but I'm in a charitable mood today. For those who don't know, it is the primary East/West corridor in lower Westchester. Right now the bulk of the work is happening in White Plains around the heavily trafficed downtown area. Exits 6, 7, and 8 are being impacted. But there is a site that can help you anticipate delays. Roadway 287 Improvements offers a “travel advisory” link which is updated with regularly. The site also includes interactive maps and the like which help create a “vision” for … (2 comments)

white plains: Spring in Full Bloom - Tibbets Park - White Plains, NY 10601 - 05/06/08 06:54 PM
I took some pictures of Tibbets Park about 2 months ago - just after a major snow. What a difference a couple of months can make. Spring is in full bloom all across Westchester and these photos are brought to you by the White Plains Beautification Foundation and mother nature. I was certainly not the only person interested in pictures that day. I ran into four other photographers taking advantage of the weather and the blooms. But let's face facts, we were all using our cameras as an "excuse" to stay in the park just a little bit longer then perhaps … (12 comments)

white plains: Lost & Found: Rescued kitten in need of new family..... - 04/25/08 09:17 PM
It was the night before my famous "tax extension experience." I was running late trying to get all my deduction ducks lined up in a row and was planning on a long night. But I needed to run a couple of errands. There was no food in the house - at least not for people and my car was running on gasoline vapors. I decided to get the gasoline first and I drove into the gas station bleary over all I had done and what was yet to come. As I was pumping my gasoline I noticed a small animal dodging … (12 comments)

white plains: Spring in Full Bloom – in Westchester, NY – (Part 2) - 04/21/08 09:30 AM
In my previous post, I had been commenting on how spring had been taking its sweet time in Westchester, NY – but what a difference a few days can make.  We had a couple of nice warm days in what has generally been a rather cool spring – and this encouraged the buds to bloom. Here are some pictures of the southern end of White Plains.  For those interested in local history, the Cherry trees along the road median of Mamaroneck Ave and Bloomingdale Rd. were the result of the diligent work of the White Plains Beautification Foundation.  The idea was … (19 comments)

white plains: Adventures in Filing for an Extension: How hard could this POSSIBLY be? - 04/17/08 05:59 PM
For various reasons, including a family illness I found that I needed to file for an extension this year. What could be simpler? How hard could this possibly be? Read on if you want to find out. I called my accountant on Monday – who was expecting that I would file for an extension. I realized suddenly that I was missing significant deductions and although the time was a concern, we agreed that I should get as many deductions as I could together so that I wouldn’t have to overpay and that I would drop everything off the next morning.

white plains: The City Never Sleeps – I’m talking about WHITE PLAINS, NY! - 04/08/08 09:50 PM
Buyers from  New York City are forever asking me if there is any nightlife in Westchester? And the answer is YES THERE IS!Downtown White Plains is bustling 24/7 these days and for those who enjoy the active night life of New York City, having such a hub near at hand makes the adjustment to more sedate suburban living far more enjoyable.  I will not try to compare what White Plains has to offer to Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera House. In the end, there is only ONE Manhattan, but the amenities of that particular city are just minutes away by train.  … (10 comments)

white plains: This Hawk Tells You why Real Estate is Truly a LOCAL BUSINESS..... - 04/07/08 08:25 PM
The picture of that hawk was taken by yours truly one morning. I had just let out the dogs into my back yard (yes its fenced) while I started making my essential morning brew when I noticed that Buddy barking at something and looking UP....I peered out the kitchen window into the back and looked in his direction and saw a very large hawk sitting in my neighbor's tree peering imperiously at the three dogs below. I've seen hawks in those trees before, either on my property with m neighbors, but was never able to capture the image. I grabbed my … (18 comments)

white plains: Easter at Carlson’s: H. Carlson’s Floral & Gift – White Plains, NY 10607 - 03/23/08 08:13 AM
Happy Easter Everyone!
It may still be cold outside - after all, as Deborah Pearce informed a few days ago, this is the earliest Easter since 1913 and the world will not see this early an Easter again for another 200 years. But on has only to go inside Carlson's Floral and Gift to see Spring in FULL FORCE! I always love going there towards the end of Lent to see what they have on display for Easter and early spring in general. The last time I wrote about Carlson's it near Christmas and the greenhouse was covered with poinsettia's with … (8 comments)

white plains: Certioraris – a Taxing Situation for New York Homeowners - or Why Jerome Hellerstein’s image is secretly being burned in effigy by almost every elected official in New York….. - 03/20/08 06:32 PM
Bear with me…this one is complicated, but doubtless there are many homeowners in New York who are hearing about certiorari appeals and how it is impacting their property taxes. I thought that it might be nice to explain in simple English what all the fuss is about and why your $#%*ing property taxes keep going up in ever larger increments. Call it my good deed of the day. If this isn’t easy reading – rest assured it was equally challenging to write.
The short story:
The short story is that successful certiorari appeals – the state-wide legal process by which commercial … (9 comments)

white plains: Introducing Scarsdale, NY 10583 - A Pictorial Overview - 03/18/08 08:51 PM
Scarsdale, NY 10583 had  the distinction of  earning the number two spot on CNNMoney.com’s top-earning towns survey in 2007 with a median household income of close to $220,000.  Living in Scarsdale certainly doesn’t come  as cheaply as does in some other municipalities in Westchester   However,  one certainly doesn’t need over $200k in household income to afford one of the wonderful coops on Garth Rd.  A one bedroom coop in Scarsdale can set you back about $200,000 depending on size, condition and complex. My blog on the pet-friendly coop Colchester Hall on Garth Road gives a good overview about the entry level … (17 comments)

white plains: It's a Dog's Life - The Secret Life of Humphrey the Newfoundland - 03/16/08 02:43 AM
Sometimes its just fun to post something that has nothing to do with real estate. Since dogs are one of my passions, a friend sent me this story in an email:
An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard.  I could tell from his collar and well-fedbelly that he had a home. He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep in a corner. An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.The next day he was back, resumed his position in the hall, and slept for an hour.  This continued for several weeks.Curious, I … (29 comments)
