white plains ny: Fotos On The Fly - Downtown White Plains at Dusk
- 05/28/14 04:09 AM
Clock Tower – downtown White Plains NY One of a series of photos I took in downtown White Plains at dusk. Some things just have a different look at twilight. The clock tower looks quite dramatic all lit up with the vibrant sunset in the background. Wish I could say it was more inspiring by the light of day. I was somewhat lucky because I happened along at the right time of day and was able to park my car about a block away from the site that I wanted to shoot. Since the sky changes rapidly at that time of day,

white plains ny: Fotos On The Fly - Sights Of The Season – Holiday Lights…
- 12/12/13 12:37 AM
Happy Holidays Everyone! For the next couple of weeks, I will be trying to post a photo every day from that depicts the sites of the season. They won’t necessarily be all about Christmas or any of the other holidays. They will just be symbolic of this special time of year. This first photo was taken of holiday lights. This house in White Plains NY did a nice understated job. It is from the Gedney Farms neighborhood in the south end of White Plains. An area noted for its large lots and pre-war homes. But I really wanted to emphasize

white plains ny: Halloween Special - H Carlson Florist of White Plains NY
- 10/29/13 03:18 PM
These days, with so much on the internet, local businesses benefit from the use of professional photography. As much as local businesses have relied on word of mouth over the years, many shoppers go to the internet first. If they like what they see, they may actually put the business on their list of stops. H Carlson Florist is a wonderful example of a local business that has thrived over the years because they are truly unique. Nancy Schellhas has a way of creating arrangements and offering quality goods for the home and hearth so that it leaves your local

white plains ny: Fotos On The Fly - For holiday lights - sometimes less is more....
- 12/24/12 03:26 AM
Christmas lights are everywhere in Westchester this time of year - from the spectacular to the gaudy to the very simple. So I'm putting up a very simple display today to show how simple sometimes is better than over-the-top. This is a balcony from a pre-war building in downtown White Plains NY. So I used HDR to bring out the texture of the brick and wrought iron railings. The simple lights let the texture and pre-war character of the building shine and still provided holiday cheer. Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season. Original Post: Sometimes simple says it

white plains ny: The Price and Politics Of the Power Grid
- 11/09/12 02:27 AM
Before I utter one more word, I will say the obvious – the devastation of Hurricane Sandy has been overwhelming. Three branches of my family have strong roots on Staten Island and I also have a 90-year-old aunt who resides in New Jersey. The loss of life, livelihoods and life savings is unfathomable and close to my heart. None of what I am about to write regarding the power grid is meant to take away or diminish the scope of the tragedy. The above photos was taken last Saturday night. It was taken of the heart of downtown White

white plains ny: The Holocaust Memorial Garden – White Plains NY – Because we must never forget…
- 08/11/12 05:23 PM
A few months ago I wrote a blog at the request of the White Plains Beautification Foundation. They were raising money for a new Cedar of Lebanon evergreen tree for the Holocaust Memorial Garden. Although I’m very familiar with downtown White Plains, I had never actually seen the garden. Located at 148 Martine Ave. right next to the Michaelian Office Building, it is a bit tucked away. I promised myself I’d go to see the garden and bring my camera – and I finally managed to do so on Thursday. The Gates of Remembrance dominate the garden. They were created

white plains ny: Fotos On the Fly – The White Plains NY Business District
- 06/07/12 04:51 PM
Many people think of White Plains mostly as a either a place to live or a place to go for fine dining and first-class shopping. However, White Plains has two populations. A live-in population that is a bit less than 60,000 and a much larger commuter population in the downtown area. In truth the business district is somewhat scattered with a portion of it being along the eastern edge of town hugging the access road to I-287. But the center of the White Plains business district is in the western portion of the downtown area sandwiched between the train station

white plains ny: Staging your home for sale – Curb appeal in Gedney Farms White Plains
- 06/02/12 03:11 PM
Curb appeal is not a trivial issue. Buyers often decide within seconds whether they have any interest in your home at all, and be it rational or not, that’s the reality. Let’s face it, between photographing homes and selling them, I spend a great deal of time looking at homes. I spend a great deal of time with buyers who are looking at homes. After a while you get a feel for what rocks and what flops. Sometimes less is more and often it just takes a few extra touches here and there to make a home really “pop” in the

white plains ny: Flowers? Still time for an arrangement at Carlson’s for Mother’s Day
- 05/10/12 06:56 PM
Carlson’s Floral and Gift at 625 Dobbs Ferry Road in White Plains always has wonderful arrangements for all seasons and occasions. I was there shortly before Easter and though the offerings I have photos of are probably no longer seasonal I thought I would share them here as I somehow never had a chance to earlier. Its always fun to see what Nancy Schellhas has on display. Even if you are not looking for a gift, it is a wonderful place to get ideas for your garden. If you are thinking of selling your Westchester home, curb appeal is absolutely

white plains ny: Fotos on the fly: Spring Blossoms & Storm Clouds….
- 04/12/12 03:16 AM
One of the greatest things about the spring and fall seasons is that the blossoms and foliage create a vivid color display. On a bright sunny day, they sight is amazing…but sometimes storm clouds create a contrast that makes the seasonal colors appear more vivid. This is particularly true when the sun is peeking through heavy cloud cover – just as it was today. This photo was taken in White Plains near the Gedney Farms neighborhood. I actually pulled the car over to capture the moment. I’ll admit that the composition isn’t what it could be, but really, its more a

Carlson’s Floral & Gift on 625 Dobbs Ferry Rd. in White Plains is always an uplifting place to visit at any time of year, but with spring in the air and flowers blooming everywhere, it is particularly inspiring. There is plenty to choose from for your Easter or Passover celebration. This week there is particular fun for the whole family when the Easter Bunny will be making a special visit to Carlson’s. So while the adults can shop for florals and plantings for the season, the kids can enjoy themselves as well. Right now is the perfect time to shop

white plains ny: White Plains Beautification Press Release: The Holocaust Memorial Garden
- 03/27/12 04:39 PM
White Plains Beautification has held a special place in the hearts of White Plains residents and commuters for many years. White Plains NY has often been called “The City In the Park” and with good reason. Gardens dot the landscape everywhere from the downtown, to our historic monuments to our parks and suburban enclaves. Much of this is due to the good offices of the White Plains Beautification Foundation. The following is a press release sent to me by White Plains Beautification regarding the Holocaust Memorial Garden on Martine Ave. The memorial Cedar of Lebanon evergreen that was dedicated in

white plains ny: December's Season of Celebrations & Sharing: The Nutcracker at the White Plains County Center
- 12/16/11 12:04 PM
An event full of tradition that the whole family can enjoy! The Nutcracker Ballet is being performed at the White Plains County Center this weekend. Sponsored by Westchester County Parks as well as the Westchester Ballet Company, this event is always a crowd pleaser. Kids and adults alike can create holiday memories. Make some memories and have some fun...I remember going to the Nutcracker Ballet as a child and being enhanted. It's a way to get away from the shop till you drop madness and have a little slice of old-fashioned holiday season when things were simpler and less materialistic.

white plains ny: Small Business Saturday – Stores to visit in White Plains NY
- 11/22/11 04:43 AM
Small Business Saturday had its debut last year. But they are upping the publicity and ante this year. In my opinion – a program like this is a step in the right direction. In Washington they jawbone about supporting small business – but talk is not action. Yet small business, including bricks and mortars have traditionally been the backbone of American exceptionalism and success. They need and deserve our patronage and support. Our love affair with big-box stores and rock bottom prices has come at a price. Service? What’s that? Knowledge of the product? You’ve got to be kidding me? In

white plains ny: Zoning & Planning and why it matters in White Plains NY
- 09/30/11 04:15 PM
Over the past few months I have written several times about the now infamous Gedney Farms vs. FASNY issue. For those not in the know – the private French American School (FASNY) is seeking a special permit to build a 1200 student K-12 campus in the Gedney neighborhood. I have been on record as being against the project. I have written a couple of posts to this effect outlining my concerns for the neighborhood and the implications for the future building prospects on other large tracts of land that have yet to be developed. Over time, circumstances change and neighborhoods

white plains ny: Happy Fall Everyone!!
- 09/24/11 03:17 PM
Gotta admit – Fall is my favorite time of year. It is a time of new beginnings and fresh starts. I look at the fourth quarter of the calendar year as the first quarter of the next year…and I think others feel the same way. About a week ago I was at Carlson’s Floral and Gift on route 100B on Dobbs Ferry Road in the White Plains PO. They are always ahead of the curve. The early signs of fall were there – but summer hadn’t quite left the building. The flowers below were of the late summer variety. The

white plains ny: Update on the Ritz Carlton of White Plains
- 09/15/11 04:54 PM
The Ritz Carlton White Plains represents the pinnacle of high-rise luxury in downtown White Plains, not to mention the county of Westchester. As far as White Plains condos are concerned, it doesn’t get any more luxurious than this! Located in the heart of the downtown area, it is just steps from some of the finest dining, entertainment and shopping that Westchester has to offer. Lets not even get started on the amazing amenities the Ritz offers – and the views on the higher floors are simply breathtaking. You can get Manhattan, the Long Island Sound and everything in between in
