In December, 2008 the California Air Resources Board passed the most sweeping emissions rule in the nation. This new reguation starts this year. According to CARB, diesel exhaust causes cancer, and swift action must be taken in order to save thousands of lives in California. This law is intended for all of the big rigs running around the state, but it affects all vehicles with a gross vehicle rating of over 14,500 pounds. All military veterans and their families were invited to see Governor Schwarzenegger sign into law AB 717 on Friday at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Plams. This bill, championed by 65th District Assemblyman Paul Cook, establishes March 30 of each year as Welcome Home Vietnam Veteran's Day. The signing ceremony took place outside the headquarters building on the General's Lawn. Architect Janet Johnston and her husband, George Armstrong, Joshua Tree residents since 2003, own a construction company that specializes in "environmentally conscientious design and construction." Johnston recently gave a lecture at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum about straw bale houses. They were first introduced in Nebraska about 130 years ago shortly after the invention of the haybaler. Between the 1880's and the 1930's there were 30 straw bale houses built in Nebraska, and some of them are still in existance today. The 29 Palms Band of Mission Indians has joined several local community and business organizations. The tribe has joined the 29 Palms Historical Society, Basin Wide Foundation, Friends of Joshua Tree, Morongo Basin Historical Society, Friendsof the Library, Joshua Tree National Park Association, Yucca Valleu Chamber of Commerce and 29 Palms Chamber of Commerce. It's interesting to note that the tribe is in the early planning stages to build a casino on their 160 acre reservation in29 Palms. Bryan D. O'Connor, a graduate of Twentynine Palms High School, will be inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame this year. O,Connor, a retired Marine Corps colonel, was pilot on STS-61B, the second ever night shuttle launch, and was commander on STS-40.
