maintenance: The Ravages of Time - 07/21/23 11:50 AM
I don't know if I was the inspiration behind Timmothy's cartoon but I doubt it. I've been bald all of his life. No amount of maintenance would change that.
Proper maintenance can extend the life of many home items like anything mechanical, plumbing related, electrical, roofing, and items that get painted. So what is normal for the items I just mentioned? Here is what the internet says.
A furnace should last 15 to 30 years. That being said I've seen furnaces last 50 to 60 years. The newer furnaces are made for efficiency. The big old coal monsters were made to last forever … (32 comments)

maintenance: Stay Cool - 06/23/23 06:59 AM
I know they say that a dog sweats through his tongue but I'm not sure if that holds true for guinea pigs as well. I know I'm glad we humans do not. That would make kissing gross, wouldn't it?
We had a hotter than normal Spring this year but now that Summer is officially here we are having lows into the upper 40's and highs in the 60's. Because of the warm Spring Timmothy and I put in the window AC units.
Both central air and window AC units need annual maintenance. I had a post a couple of years back on maintaining your … (24 comments)

maintenance: A little bit of maintenance may keep things a little cooler. - 08/12/18 12:09 PM
With the temps in Minot at record highs for the past few days I wanted to share a simple easy tip to get the most out of your older window AC unit.
If the inner workings of your window AC unit get to hot the compressor inside of it will shut down and not blow cold air (the fan however will continue to run and blow HOT air).
The 1st thing you need to do is make sure the back-side of the unit is unobstructed of debris such as leaves and various tree seeds, these you just vacuum off. However if you see that … (18 comments)

maintenance: Maintenance Free - 06/13/17 07:13 PM

Maybe this picture should be titled "Never Maintained" or totally free of maintenance as opposed to maintenance free.
It doesn't take a genius to see that this garage is close to useless due to extreme neglect. I'm sure that at one time this garage was the absolute pride of it's owner. Regretfully it has gone from pride to blight. It's gone from a building of great value to the owner to an expensive eyesore to be removed. There is no deep moral lesson here. Simple put: if you want your property to maintain or gain value you must maintain it.

maintenance: Bad Gas, out of the Can - 05/22/17 07:32 PM

A lot of home owners in North Dakota are firing up their lawn mowers, garden tillers, chain saws, and more.
And many home owners are pulling on those starter cords and nothing is happening... they won't start.
Why is that?
Usually it's bad gas.
OK, it was good gas when it came out of the pump... 9 months ago when you bought it for your lawn mower last fall. There in lies the problem. Gasoline has a shelf life and it's about a month when it comes to today's lawn mowers and today's gas.
Today's lawn mowers are higher performance today then they were years ago and they … (12 comments)
