mouse river flood of 2011: 4 Years Ago This Week - 02/27/16 09:53 AM

4 Years Ago This Week... We moved back Home
After the flood of 2011 our home was left surrounded by and inundated with mud and yuck from a river flowing through it for a full month. Things looked like this in August of 2011:
On Feb 24th 2012 , 4 years ago this week, our home was fully restored and we moved back in. It was a devastating and life changing  experience for thousands in Minot ND but it was also a valuable learning experience for those who chose to grow from it. No lives were lost and the sense of community it brought about was … (21 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: Hey Man, You Got Any Grass! - 05/22/12 03:49 AM
Hey Man, You Got Any Grass!
After the flood much of the vegetation was killed off, everything from grass to trees. After all they were underwater for more then a month.
Many folks, like myself, were thrilled to be able to get back in our homes once they were re-constructed. Our yards did not hold nearly the importance that re-building our dwellings held. Very few of the thousands of homes that had to deal with the disaster had time to put seed down last fall. Still today, nearly a year later, less then 50% of the homes in the valley are … (4 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: Post Flood Photos, Pre Re-Construction. - 07/31/11 05:37 AM
Post Flood Photos, Pre Re-Construction.
5 weeks after the start of the flood. Remember that they (The Corp of Engineers) deliberately held the water to the peak height of the flood for over two weeks, thus we could only get to our homes for the 1st time just a little over a week ago. This is what most of 10,000 of us came home to.

Here is what we accomplised yesterday with the help of 10 volunteers from The Lutheren Disaster Relief Group

And these fellows came by twice as we had this piled this … (7 comments)

Another Open Letter about the Minot Flooding.
Hi Barbara,This whole ordeal has been much tougher then any of us affected could ever imagine. There is still no information on the tough questions we all have to deal with and in fact more and more tough questions keep coming up. Some examples of what we do not know are: Which houses will the government (City County, State, or Federal) buy out? Not one single buy out has been mentioned. There has been absolutely NO plan mentioned as to what steps the government may take to keep this from happening again? Will the Corp … (7 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: Oh Man! Where Is That Package??? - 07/22/11 12:28 PM
Oh Man! Where Is That Package???
Hi everybody! First my apology for being so absent. Losing your home, your business, and your rental property has a tendency to keep you very busy. Big things like not being homeless and living on the street. Making plans on how/where to build or re-build. Trying to get answers from about 6 government entities as to what the heck they are doing and how is it going to affect you. While everyone we have worked with has been very kind and understanding but none of them have a clue as to what the other is … (8 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: I Saw My House Yesterday! Now What? - 07/17/11 02:04 AM
I Saw My House Yesterday! Now What?
Yesterday was the 1st day I was actually able to get to my house in over three weeks. It took a lot of round-about driving to get there but I actually got to. Today, after worship, I will be heading over to stick a pump in the basement window and start to drain the muck out.
I'm very excited that it's finally MY turn to start the repair or reclamation process. I know it's going to be scary to open that door for the first time and see all the devastation. I expect all … (10 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: I've Been Keeping A Messy Office Lately - 07/15/11 03:31 PM
I've Been Keeping A Messy Office Lately
You know I haven't been in the office for over three weeks now, so I'm cleaning it out!

Here is my current filing system.

Isn't it nice the way the cleaning crew took such care to place things in a fashion that I could inspect my belongings? When I finally did get to return to my office I had a Police escort to get there. To make a long very angry story short my Broker told me if I wanted anything from my office I had better get over there as … (10 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: What Does A Flooded Home Look Like? - 07/14/11 03:12 AM
What Does A Flooded Home Look Like?
I have been eagerly awaiting to get my first look at one of my three flooded properties. The water was up to the ceiling in my home and we still can not get any closer then two blocks away to look at it. It has now been three weeks. The water is now down to about the main floor level. It stayed at ceiling level for two full weeks.
My office had about 4 feet of water for two weeks and I have yet been able to get to it. Yesterday was disapointing as … (11 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: Open Letter To All my Friends - 07/11/11 03:59 AM
This open letter to all my friends was prompted by the most recent letter of concern I had received from AR friend Kristine. Like many of you, Kristine is more then just a face on AR, she is a true friend.
07/10/2011
Kristine,Thank you so much for thinking of me and my family. The whole flood experience has been very overwhelming. Each stage has had it's own set of emotional strain. A member of our church family died this week of a heart attack brought on by all the stress. Pretty much the second the river crested the press left town even though … (11 comments)

mouse river flood of 2011: Cha.. Cha..Cha.. Changes! - 07/01/11 02:53 PM
I was thinking of the David Bowie song Changes as I reviewed this picture I had just taken minutes ago. There are many more changes ahead in my families life, and 4,000 or more other families lives who lost their homes to this flood, then we could ever begin to guess. We are left wondering just what may or may not ever be again.

If you could see the original 14 mega pixel photograph you could zoom in and see all the debris. The three green signs near the center of the picture are for two roll-offs where people drop off yard … (15 comments)
