real estate: Thrift Stores - 08/20/08 03:27 AM
This post is for ALL Realtors as well as folks moving to Minot North Dakota.
A lot of people, myself included, like to hunt for bargains so as community promoters (Realtors) we should be able to tell clients where the bargain shops are. I work with a lot of young families due to the Minot Air Force Base and these kids can use all the help they can get. I also work with some very affluent people and they often ask where they can donate items that they have updated or items they just don't use. Everybody can use a Thrift … (13 comments)

real estate: The Great Tomato Festival - 08/20/08 02:56 AM
Things have been so crazy busy here in Minot I have not been able to keep up with my goal of sharing one great thing about Minot North Dakota every day. Therefore I will share a few thing today just to get caught up. Speaking of "GREAT", last Thursday was the 20th Annual "The Great Tomato Festival".

Picture courtesy of KXMC-TV News in Minot

The Great Tomato Festival is a wonderful event that is put on by three different groups in town, The Minot Public Library, The Western Plains Opera, and The Taube Museum Of Art (pronounced Taw-bee). Each … (0 comments)

real estate: Minot North Dakota on the National News. - 08/13/08 08:19 AM
Yesterday on ABC National news they started out a story with a line something like: "One of the last places you would expect to find oil is North Dakota". I thought that was rather curious, where would you expect to find oil? They have been drilling and finding oil in Western North Dakota for 50 or more years. Do you only expect oil where a hillbilly might be shoot-en at some food (Beverly Hillbillies (TV) for you young ones) or in the Middle East? Oh well, it still was a good story. What I liked most was the part about people … (2 comments)

real estate: My New Office! - 08/13/08 07:53 AM

I am so excited even though I will not be moving in until September. I also had to photo-shop my sign into the picture. What a GREAT location! I am right next to Oak Park Center which houses several businesses including an appliance sales and service shop, Coffee Kiosk, and much much more. How great to that if I'm watching the kids and a client comes in I can send them next door to a movie or the Arcade. Directly across the street is Oak Park where I can exercise for lunch instead of just sit and get fat. This … (12 comments)

real estate: Pictorial Tour Of Roosevelt Park, Minot ND - 08/09/08 02:39 PM
I feel Roosevelt Park is Minot's most under acknowledged park and one of the least heralded attractions. This is a GREAT Park with something for the whole family. A part of the Park is the Roosevelt Park Zoo which I have acknowledged in an earlier post so this post will concentrate on the Park itself. Please enjoy, all 30 some pictures were taken on August 9th 2008.

real estate: 1%, a short note with no funny pictures. - 08/08/08 08:47 AM
1%. I am often asked why I live up North and how I (or anyone else) can tolerate the harsh winters. I believe my response has always been "it's the people". The people up here in North Dakota have a fantastic work ethic as evidenced by our extremely low unemployment. The people up here have a high respect for the law as evidenced by the lowest crime rate per capita then any other State.
NOW the ND-NAR has added another fantastic statistic for us to brag about. In the last 12 months  less then 1%of North Dakotains defaulted on their home … (5 comments)

real estate: Look Out for that Wienie! - 08/08/08 08:04 AM

It was another Father - Son day. I try to have a Father/Son day and a Father/Daughter day at least once a week. Don't get me wrong, I am married to and live with my kids mother but I try to have at least one special day a week with each one. My father was a workaholic and I think just like some other "aholic" behaviors this can be hereditary. I did not get to know my dad until I was in my 40's and by then I really wasn't to interested anymore. Even though I think I'm … (6 comments)

real estate: Oh NO Paris, what did you say! - 08/06/08 12:40 AM
Oh NO, she said what! I woke up this morning to the BIG news of a Paris Hilton statement. As I said I just woke up so I hope I have this right. There were two things that caught my attention. Number one was that she didn't like being compared to Barack Obama (am I wrong or doesn't she have that backward). Second and most disturbing is she called John McCain "White Haired Dude" twice. Oh NOOOOO!
The Press has twisted any and every thing they possibly can, and a few things that could not possibly, into race discrimination. Now Paris … (25 comments)

real estate: Civil War, State vs State Humor - 08/04/08 09:45 AM
I used to travel a lot before I became a Realtor. I covered every inch of North Dakota calling on Churches to see if they were interested in a Pictorial Directory of their members. While ND boarders 3 other States and Canada I found it odd, but fun, that the residents on our Western boarder had a war of State jokes going with Montana.

At this point I can only remember one of the zingers which was told to me by a priest in Beach ND. Beach is a town right on the boarder with Montana. So the joke goes:

real estate: It's pronounced My-Knot, not Minnow! - 08/02/08 02:30 AM
At least in North Dakota we pronounce Minot as My-Knot. Until a close friend of mine made fun of people pronouncing Minot as Minnow I had not really noticed. Now over the past two years I'm wondering if anyone outside of North Dakota knows how to pronounce it properly? Maybe in Minot Massachusetts they say Minnow.
Our town slogan might help: "Why Not Minot".  Wouldn't you know that our beloved soldiers (and I mean that, we truly love our soldiers and their families) at the Minot Air Force Base have a reply: Freezin is the Reason". Keep in mind these wonderful folks … (3 comments)

real estate: Is Your Advertising Legal? - 08/01/08 12:27 PM
Are your Real Estate ads  legal? Prior to my recent change of brokers I checked with our State Real Estate Commission about some legalities of advertising. I found it unbelievably restrictive. My past broker did not contribute a dime to my advertising so I always felt why promote him? I was also curious about some activities that other agents used so I asked those questions as well. Instead of giving you the whole list I have just included a few. After reading them it should be clear that your broker owns your butt when it comes to advertising (at least in ND anyway).

real estate: I'm Longing for the Good Old Days. - 08/01/08 01:02 AM
I'm longing for the Good Old Days. No not the days of my youth, the good old days of a few thousand years ago. This may sound strange coming from a North Dakota boy but I thrive on HOT weather. As far as I know today may be the hottest day so far this year. It is forcasted to get up to 90. I like the 100's.
I know that doesn't seem to make since, I live in North Dakota and I love weather associated with that found at the equator. Well that is why I long for the good old … (5 comments)

real estate: I'm Moving! - 07/31/08 12:48 AM
This is some what of a re-post as what I put up yesterday ended up on localism only and I wanted to share it with my Active Rain friends.
I have made the decision to leave RE/MAX Signature Properties in Minot North Dakota for a small independent Brokerage called Oak Park Realty. My broker operates another office and I will be alone in this one for now but I hope not for long. I am also working on my Broker license and hope to keep both operations going if my current broker should retire.
Thanks,
Bob

real estate: I Am Moving My Office and License - 07/30/08 03:22 AM
I have applied to move my license from my current broker to another broker here in town. Many factors worked into this decision and I'm sure I am making the correct choice. Also I am working on my brokers license and this change will eventually lead to me owning the agency, I hope. If you have questions about my future please feel free to call or email me. I will post more about it as the procedure progresses. Thanks,

real estate: Re-Visiting a House - 07/27/08 04:45 AM
I have a buyer who has been getting discouraged due to the run/demand for houses up here in oil boom country. He has made offers on two houses (one a full price offer) and has not won either offer. For those of you who are new to my blog the area I work in, Western North Dakota, is growing in leaps and bounds. With the oil boom and the announcement that the Minot Air Force Base is expanding by 1200 troops and their families there is a buying frenzy between those who need a home and investors who want to rent … (3 comments)

real estate: Realtors and Photography - 07/25/08 06:49 AM

I've noticed from many of the Active Rain communities "About Me" biographies I've read that a lot of us are photography hobbyists or professionals. I really enjoyed seeing the photography submitted to The North Dakota State Fair when I was there on Wednesday. I am a member of the local camera club, which I joined hoping someone could show me how to use my camera. I have noticed that a lot of people posting pictures to the MLS could use some lessons in photography. Don't you love those pictures of a toilet? My favorite is the shot of a corner … (9 comments)

real estate: ND State Fair, Only 36 hours left! - 07/25/08 06:23 AM

Tomorrow is the last day of The North Dakota State Fair. Come up and have some fun (if you are in Canada come down and have some fun)! Our family had a GREAT time last Wednesday and I know you will too. I'm not sure but I think it closes at midnight on Saturday (7/26/2008). As always they will close with a fantastic fireworks display. Now check out my clowns below.

real estate: Active Rain, Active Morning, has me thinking Insurance. - 07/23/08 12:35 AM

I'm writing this at 7 am this morning but the story really starts around 4 am. I'm not sure what woke me around 4 am but I could not help but notice that it was non-stop lightning, little or faint thunder. I layed half awake for the next hour until I got up and put the dog out and much to my amazement there was no rain yet the lightning was still non-stop and the lightning buy this time was getting loud. Then there was a BIG one, big enough to scare my 8 year old out of her bedroom … (3 comments)

real estate: Say Anything Blog - 07/20/08 05:24 AM
I just came from a clients home as I was there to get his acceptance of an offer. We were causually visiting and he was telling me about all the time he spends blogging and helping a friend out with a novel. Much to my surprise he told me that his political blog has had a lot of national attention and in fact Rush had mentioned his blogg twice just last week. Rob also broke the story of national left wing talk show host Ed Schultz starting a bar fight and clocking a woman in the bar.
If you would like … (7 comments)

real estate: Kids Wierd Ideas - 07/18/08 02:21 PM
Like all kids, my 6 year old and my 8 year old (especially my always inventive 8 year old daughter) come up with some unique ways to entertain themselves.
I'm going to explain this one first because it makes the picture even sillyier. This was a game of: I will swing on my belly from the tree swing while holding a swimming noodle and try to bean you while you are in the pool trying to splash me. Got it? I'm pretty sure my son didn't.
